Chapter 4: What the Bank Found

Dad put the call on speaker.

A woman's voice came through the phone.

“Mr. Harper, I'm calling about the account ending in 4812.””

Dad glanced at me.

“Yes.””

“There are several irregularities we'd like to discuss.””

Mom whispered, “Oh God.””

Dad heard her.

His head turned.

The bank representative continued.

“Three electronic transfers were made into the account over the past year. One appears to have originated from an account belonging to your daughter, Evelyn Harper.””

Dad looked at Mom.

“I know.””

“The issue is that the authorization records don't match the customer's signature.””

My mouth went dry.

Dad said, “Whose signature do they match?””

The woman hesitated.

“We can't disclose that over the phone.””

Dad's jaw clenched.

“I'm her father.””

“I understand. But the account holder needs to be present.””

Dad looked at me.

“I can bring her in.””

“Mr. Harper, there's another issue.””

“What?””

“The receiving account was opened using an identification document.””

“What identification document?””

“A driver's license.””

Dad's eyes narrowed.

“Evelyn doesn't have a driver's license.””

Mom closed her eyes.

Mia whispered, “Dad…”

Dad heard her.

“Can you tell me whose ID was used?””

The representative remained silent.

“I’m sorry, sir. We need the account holder present.””

Dad said, “We'll be there today.””

The call ended.

Nobody moved.

Dad turned toward me.

“Get your wallet.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

“Because we're going to the bank.””

Mom stepped forward.

“David, you're overreacting.””

He looked at her.

“Am I?””

“I can explain everything.””

“You've had all afternoon.””

Her voice broke.

“Please.””

Dad shook his head.

“No.””

Mia suddenly started crying.

“I didn't know how bad it got.””

I turned toward her.

“You knew.””

“I knew about the money.””

“You knew about the account.””

“Yes.””

“You knew the account was opened in my name.””

She wiped her eyes.

“I didn't know they used your ID.””

“Who is they?””

She froze.

I felt something inside me go still.

“Who is they, Mia?””

She looked at Mom.

Mom looked at the floor.

Dad noticed.

“Mia.””

She swallowed.

“I wasn't supposed to tell you.””

“Tell me what?””

“My… my boyfriend was involved.””

Dad stared at her.

“What boyfriend?””

“Ethan.””

I blinked.

Mia had mentioned Ethan a few times.

A guy from downtown.

Someone Mom apparently loved.

Dad had never met him.

“You let some man open an account in my name?””

“No!””

“Then how did he get my information?””

Mia shook her head.

“He didn't open it.””

“Who did?””

Her eyes moved toward Mom.

Silence.

Dad's face hardened.

“Linda.””

Mom looked up.

“I only gave her what she needed.””

My stomach dropped.

“You gave her my identification?””

Mom shook her head.

“No.””

“Then what?””

“Your social security number.””

The room seemed to tilt.

Dad stared at her.

“Why?””

“She needed to set up the transfers.””

“What transfers?””

“The money.””

I stepped closer.

“You gave Mia my information so she could take my money.””

Mom began crying.

“I thought I was protecting her.””

“From what?””

“From losing everything.””

I laughed again.

“What about me?””

“You had a future.””

“So did she.””

“You don't understand.””

“No,” I whispered.

“I understand perfectly.””

Dad walked toward the kitchen counter.

He picked up Mom's phone.

“What are you doing?””

“Checking something.””

“David, give me that.””

He unlocked it.

Mom tried to grab it.

Dad held it above his head.

“You're not taking her privacy,” he said.

“I'm checking my wife's messages because apparently my entire household has secrets.””

He scrolled.

His face became more severe.

“What is Ethan's last name?””

Mia looked down.

“Cole.””

Dad kept scrolling.

Then stopped.

He turned the screen toward me.

There was a message.

From Mom to Mia.

*Don't tell Evelyn yet. Once the account closes, we'll replace the money.*

I read it twice.

My hands began shaking.

“When?””

Mom said nothing.

Dad scrolled again.

Another message.

This one from Mia.

*She'll never notice. She trusts you.*

My chest felt hollow.

Dad looked at my mother.

“You wrote this?””

Mom's shoulders dropped.

“Yes.””

“And you said she trusts you.””

“Yes.””

He nodded slowly.

“She did.””

The words were barely audible.

Then another notification appeared.

A new message.

Dad tapped it.

The sender was *Ethan Cole*.

The message contained only one sentence.

*Did your dad find the envelope?*

Mia went white.

Dad looked at her.

“How does Ethan know about the envelope?””

“I don't know.””

The phone buzzed again.

Another message.

*Because if he sees what's in the second file, we're all finished.*

Dad stopped breathing for a second.

I looked at him.

“What second file?””

He turned the phone around so I could see it.

There was a folder attached.

Named:

*HARPER ESTATE — CONFIDENTIAL*

I frowned.

“My estate?””

Dad's eyes flicked toward Mom.

“What estate?””

She shook her head.

“I don't know.””

Dad opened the attachment.

A scanned legal document appeared.

At the top was my full name.

Below it was a date.

And beneath that, one line that made Dad drop the phone onto the counter.

*Beneficiary: Evelyn Harper.*

He looked at me.

Then at Mom.

“Why,” he whispered, “does my daughter's name appear on a trust document worth nearly half a million dollars?””

Mia started crying.

Mom covered her face.

I couldn't feel my fingers.

Then Dad scrolled to the final page.

There was another signature.

This time, it belonged to a man I had never heard of.

And next to his name was a title.

*Trustee.*

Dad stared at it.

Then slowly said,

“We need to find this man before someone empties that trust.””
