Chapter 9: The Real Betrayal

Nobody spoke.

I stared at the photograph.

Mom looked terrified.

Ethan looked smug.

Richard looked calm.

And Lucas—

Lucas was standing beside them with his head lowered.

Like he already knew the betrayal would hurt.

I looked at him.

“When was this taken?””

“Six months ago.””

“Why were you there?””

“I thought I was helping.””

“You met my mother six months before you told me you loved me?””

Lucas nodded.

I felt something inside me collapse.

“Did you approach me because of the trust?””

“No.””

“Did she ask you to date me?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

“Then why?””

“I was working with Ethan.””

Dad moved closer.

“On what?””

Lucas looked at him.

“Stopping him.””

Dad frowned.

“What?””

Lucas stepped forward.

“The photo isn't what you think.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Then explain it.””

Lucas pulled his phone from his pocket.

He opened a folder.

Inside were dozens of photographs.

Bank records.

Messages.

Recordings.

He showed me the first.

Ethan meeting Mom.

The second.

Mia handing over my account information.

The third.

Ethan meeting Richard.

The fourth.

Lucas meeting Richard.

I looked at him.

“You were investigating them.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Ethan had already destroyed my family.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“My sister.””

Lucas swallowed.

“Ethan was engaged to her.””

I stared.

He continued.

“She found out he was gambling. She tried to leave. He threatened her.””

Dad asked, “And you got involved?””

“My sister asked me to help.””

I looked at Lucas.

“Then you met my mother.””

“Yes.””

“And she knew who you were.””

“Yes.””

“And still let you date me.””

Lucas nodded.

“She wanted me close to you because she was afraid Ethan would try something.””

I shook my head.

“You're saying you were protecting me?””

“I was.””

“By lying to me?””

“I was trying to gather evidence.””

I looked at Dad.

He was reading one of the records.

“Evelyn.””

He handed me a document.

It was a police report.

Filed six months ago.

The complainant was Lucas.

Against Ethan.

For fraud and coercion.

But the case had been closed.

“Why?””

Lucas answered.

“Because the evidence disappeared.””

I looked at him.

“Who made it disappear?””

He looked at Mom.

“She withdrew her complaint.””

I felt my pulse pounding.

“My mother?””

Lucas nodded.

“She was afraid.””

“Of Ethan?””

“Of Richard.””

Dad stepped forward.

“That makes no sense.””

Lucas shook his head.

“It does.””

He pointed to the trust agreement.

“Richard doesn't just control the money.””

I frowned.

“What else?””

“He controls the legal records surrounding it.””

Dad looked at him.

“Meaning?””

“He can trigger the financial-compromise clause if Evelyn is accused of fraud.””

I stared.

Lucas continued.

“That's what Ethan wanted.””

“So he could report me?””

“Yes.””

“But why?””

“Because if you're arrested or formally investigated, the trust gets frozen longer.””

“And then?””

“Richard gets temporary control.””

Dad's face darkened.

“And Ethan gets his cut.””

Lucas nodded.

I looked at him.

“Where's Mom?””

Lucas hesitated.

“Richard has her.””

I froze.

“You knew?””

“I knew she was supposed to meet him tonight.””

“Where?””

“The old family estate.””

Dad grabbed his keys.

“We're going.””

I followed.

Mia stepped forward.

“I’m coming.””

Dad looked at her.

“No.””

“Please.””

“You lied to Evelyn.””

“I know.””

“You helped them.””

“I know.””

“Then stay here.””

Mia cried.

“I want to fix it.””

I turned toward her.

“Then call Ethan.””

She froze.

“Get him to meet you.””

“What?””

“Tell him I agreed to marry Lucas.””

Dad stared at me.

“What are you doing?””

“I'm giving Ethan what he thinks he wants.””

Lucas's face tightened.

“You don't have to.””

“I do.””

I turned to Mia.

“Can you get him to come?””

She nodded slowly.

“He'll come.””

“Good.””

We drove to the estate.

It was an old stone house outside the city.

The gates were open.

Lights glowed inside.

Dad told me to stay behind him.

We entered.

Mom was sitting in the library.

Her hands were tied.

Ethan stood behind her.

Richard sat at the fireplace.

He looked completely calm.

“Evelyn,” he said.

I stepped forward.

“Let her go.””

Richard smiled.

“Come in.””

Dad moved beside me.

Richard looked at him.

“You came.””

“She’s my wife.””

Richard smiled.

“For now.””

My stomach twisted.

Ethan held up a folder.

“You brought the documents?””

I nodded.

“I'll sign.””

Lucas moved forward.

Ethan pointed a gun.

“Stay there.””

Everything stopped.

Dad raised his hands.

Richard looked at Ethan.

“You weren't supposed to bring a weapon.””

Ethan laughed.

“You told me to make sure she couldn't leave.””

Richard's expression hardened.

“That was not an instruction to kill anyone.””

I stared at Richard.

“You've been using him.””

“Yes.””

“And my mother?””

“An unfortunate participant.””

Mom cried.

“I was trying to help you.””

I looked at her.

“You stole from me.””

“I know.””

“You lied.””

“I know.””

“You let Mia destroy my dress.””

Mom broke down.

“I was desperate.””

I looked at Richard.

“And you?””

He nodded.

“I created the trust.””

“You threatened my family.””

“I protected my investment.””

I felt sick.

“Investment?””

He stood.

“You are my daughter.””

I shook my head.

“You don't get to call me that.””

His face changed.

For the first time, he looked hurt.

Then he said,

“You should ask your father why he never told you the last part.””

I turned toward Dad.

“What last part?””

Dad looked at Richard.

Richard smiled.

“He knows.””

I stared at Dad.

“What?””

Dad's eyes filled with tears.

Richard said quietly,

“Your mother didn't choose David because she loved him.””

Mom looked up.

“Richard, stop.””

He continued.

“She chose him because I paid him.””

Dad closed his eyes.

I felt my heart stop.

“Dad?””

He whispered,

“That's not the truth.””

Richard laughed.

“Then tell her.””

Dad looked at me.

“I didn't take the money for myself.””

Richard said,

“You took it.””

Dad shook his head.

“I took it to keep your mother alive.””

Richard stared at him.

“Tell her the rest.””

Dad didn't speak.

Richard's smile returned.

“Tell her where the rest of the money went.””

I looked between them.

“What rest?””

Dad's face went pale.

Richard stepped closer.

“The money I gave your father wasn't for your mother.””

He pointed to the documents.

“It was the first contribution to your trust.””

I stared.

“What?””

Richard smiled.

“And your father stole it.””

Dad's voice broke.

“I was going to put it back.””

Richard looked at him.

“You never did.””

The room went silent.

Then Mom whispered,

“Because David never knew the account belonged to Evelyn.””

I looked at Dad.

He was crying.

Richard reached for the trust documents.

“You see, Evelyn?””

He smiled.

“Everyone lied to you.””

Then the lights went out.

May you like

A gunshot cracked through the darkness.

And someone screamed.
