Chapter 5: The Person Nobody Expected To Return

My father looked older than I remembered.

That was the first thing I noticed.

His hair was completely gray.

His face had deeper lines.

But his eyes were the same.

The same eyes that used to read bedtime stories.

The same eyes that held my hand when I was afraid.

The same eyes that disappeared from my life eight years earlier.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Then my mother whispered:

“What are you doing here?””

My father looked at her.

“I came because my daughter deserved the truth.””

Claire’s face went white.

“You knew?””

He looked at her.

“I knew enough.””

I looked at Mark.

“What is happening?””

Mark walked toward me.

“I found your father this morning.””

“Why?””

He handed me the folder.

“Because I needed answers.””

I opened it.

Inside were old documents.

Emails.

Bank records.

Letters.

My hands shook as I read.

The story I had been told for eight years was a lie.

My father had not abandoned us.

He had not chosen another life.

He had not disappeared because he stopped caring.

He had been pushed away.

By my mother.

By the same person whose signature was on those papers.

I looked up.

“Mom?””

She started crying.

“Emma…”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“No more excuses.””

My father stepped closer.

“I found out your mother had been hiding money from me.””

My mother looked down.

“She was planning to leave.””

My father continued.

“But when she realized I discovered it, she told everyone I abandoned the family.””

The room felt like it was spinning.

Claire whispered:

“Mom told me you left.””

My father looked at her sadly.

“I know.””

Claire covered her mouth.

Suddenly everything changed.

Her jealousy.

Her anger.

Her belief that I had been the favorite.

She had been raised on a lie.

My mother shook her head.

“I did what I had to do.””

My father looked at her.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“You did what benefited you.””

Nobody spoke.

Vivian carefully stepped back.

Giving us space.

I looked at Claire.

“Did you know?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

For the first time all day, I believed her.

“I thought you were the lucky one,” she whispered.

I looked at her.

“And I thought you loved me.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I did.””

I swallowed.

“Then why?””

She had no answer.

Because there wasn’t a good one.

Mark took my hand.

“We can still stop the wedding.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“You don’t have to marry me today if you don’t want to.””

I stared at him.

After everything.

After the chaos.

After my family falling apart.

He was the only person who gave me a choice.

I looked down at the ruined dress.

The dress that was supposed to represent the beginning of my perfect life.

Then I looked at the people who had tried to destroy it.

And I realized something.

They had not ruined my wedding.

They had revealed themselves before I walked into my future.

Vivian walked toward me holding another garment bag.

“Emma.””

I looked at her.

“What is that?””

She smiled slightly.

“The reason I wasn’t worried about the dress.””

She opened it.

Inside was another gown.

Simple.

Elegant.

Beautiful.

“But the damaged dress—”

“Can be repaired.””

She looked at Claire.

“But some things take longer.””

I touched the new dress.

For the first time that morning, I felt calm.

Then Vivian handed me a small envelope.

“This was attached to the original dress when it arrived.””

I frowned.

“Who sent it?””

She looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

My fingers opened the envelope.

Inside was one handwritten note.

Only one sentence.

My blood turned cold.

Because the handwriting wasn’t my mother’s.

It wasn’t Claire’s.

It wasn’t anyone I knew.

It said:

*“The person who tried to destroy your wedding is not the person you should be afraid of.””*

May you like

And underneath it was a name.

A name that changed everything.
