Chapter 9: The Last Secret Before The Wedding
For years, I believed my family was broken because of one person.
My father.
Then I believed it was because of my mother.
Then Claire.
Then Natalie.
But standing in that boutique, surrounded by lies, I realized something.
The truth was never one person.
It was a chain.
Everyone had held one piece.
Everyone had hidden something.
And I was the last person to know.
Natalie arrived that evening.
No dramatic entrance.
No anger.
No excuses.
She simply walked through the boutique doors carrying an old leather folder.
She looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
I didn’t move.
“You have a strange way of apologizing.””
She accepted that.
“I know.””
“Why now?””
She looked at the dress.
“Because I thought you deserved to know before you married into a family built on secrets.””
I looked at Mark.
He looked away.
“What exactly happened?””
Natalie opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Real documents.
Not fake ones.
“The company your mother and father built was never destroyed because of money.””
She looked at me.
“It was destroyed because of control.””
She explained everything.
My mother had created fake records.
She had blamed my father.
She had convinced everyone he abandoned us.
But the person helping her was not Claire.
Not Jason.
Not Mark.
It was someone nobody suspected.
Someone who had been quietly moving pieces for years.
Natalie placed one final document on the table.
I read the name.
And my heart stopped.
“Jason?””
Mark looked shocked.
“My brother?””
Natalie nodded.
“He was the person your mother trusted most after your father left.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“He helped create the fake records.””
Mark stepped back.
“No.””
Natalie looked at him.
“I’m sorry.””
Everything became clear.
Jason wasn’t trying to ruin my wedding because he cared about Claire.
He was trying to stop the truth from coming out.
The ink.
The documents.
The break-in.
All of it.
He wasn’t trying to destroy my marriage.
He was trying to destroy the evidence.
My phone rang.
Detective Harris.
I answered.
“Hello?””
“Emma, you need to listen carefully.””
“What happened?””
“We found Jason.””
My stomach tightened.
“Where?””
“He was leaving town.””
“And?””
A pause.
“He confessed.””
I closed my eyes.
“What did he say?””
Detective Harris lowered his voice.
“He said the person who hired him was not your mother.””
My blood ran cold.
“Then who?””
Silence.
Then:
“Your mother’s attorney.””
I frowned.
“Her attorney?””
“Yes.””
“That doesn’t make sense.””
Detective Harris paused.
“Emma, there’s something else.””
“What?””
“He isn’t just your mother’s attorney.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Who is he?””
The detective answered.
And the name made everyone in the room go silent.
Because it was a name I knew.
A name I had heard my entire life.
A name connected to my family.
A name connected to my wedding.
“His name is Richard Carter.””
My heart stopped.
Because Richard Carter was my grandfather.
May you like
My father’s father.
The man everyone told me had died years ago.
