Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Locked Study

My father didn't speak until we reached the kitchen.

The garden party continued outside, but the music had stopped. Through the glass doors, I could see relatives gathering in small groups, whispering and looking toward the house.

I sat at the kitchen island.

My father placed a glass of water in front of me.

"Drink something, sweetheart.""

I wrapped both hands around it.

"Are you really divorcing Vanessa?""

He pulled out the chair beside me.

"Yes.""

"Because of what happened today?""

He shook his head.

"Because of what happened today, and because of everything I should have noticed before.""

I stared at the water.

"Is it my fault?""

His chair scraped backward.

"No.""

He came around the island and knelt in front of me.

"Listen carefully, Lily. You did not cause this. You didn't destroy my marriage.

You didn't make Vanessa say those things. And you will never have to earn your place in this house.""

I tried to hold back the tears.

"But she says you only married her because you wanted someone to raise me.""

My father closed his eyes briefly.

"That isn't true.""

"She said Mom would have wanted you to be happy, and that I should stop making things difficult.""

He gently took my hands.

"Your mother wanted me to love you, protect you, and make sure you always knew you were enough. I failed to do that when I wasn't paying attention.""

His voice cracked slightly.

"I'm sorry.""

I didn't know what to say.

For years, I had imagined what it would feel like if Dad finally stood up for me.

I thought I would feel happy.

Instead, I felt exhausted.

Like I'd been carrying something too heavy for too long and had only just been allowed to put it down.

A few minutes later, Michael entered through the back door.

My father's older brother was a tall man with silver hair and a habit of speaking only when necessary.

"Daniel," he said quietly.

"We need to talk.""

Dad glanced at me.

"Not in front of Lily.""

Michael looked at me.

"Actually, I think she needs to hear some of this. At least the parts that concern her.""

My father hesitated.

Then he pulled out the chair opposite me.

"All right.""

Michael placed a thick folder on the counter.

"Vanessa knows about the safe.""

Dad nodded.

"She mentioned it outside.""

"Then we shouldn't wait.""

I looked between them.

"What safe?""

Neither answered immediately.

Michael opened the folder and removed several photographs.

The first showed a wooden door inside my father's home office.

The second showed a close-up of a small brass lock.

The third showed a stack of documents spread across a desk.

"Your father discovered something unusual about the property," Michael explained.

"Something that may involve your mother's estate.""

I stopped breathing for a moment.

"My mom's estate?""

Dad looked at Michael.

"Careful.""

Michael nodded.

"Lily, your mother owned this house before she died. She also left certain documents in a private trust. Your father has been trying to verify what happened to those documents.""

I looked at my father.

"Why?""

He rubbed his forehead.

"Because I recently found evidence that some of the paperwork may have been changed after your mother died.""

I stared at him.

"What paperwork?""

"Ownership records. Financial documents. Some things connected to the family trust.""

My stomach tightened.

"Did Vanessa do something?""

Dad didn't answer immediately.

That silence frightened me more than anything else.

Three months earlier, he had asked me whether I'd noticed Vanessa going into his office.

At the time, I thought he was simply being suspicious.

Now I remembered something.

"She has a key," I said.

Both men looked at me.

"To the office?""

I nodded.

"She told me it was because she needed to organize your papers. Sometimes she went in when you were at work.""

Michael exchanged a glance with my father.

"How often?"" Dad asked.

"Almost every week.""

"Did you ever see her take anything?""

I hesitated.

Then I remembered the night I had come downstairs for water.

It was late. The hallway lights were off, except for the small lamp outside Dad's office.

Vanessa had been standing inside.

She was holding a folder.

When she'd noticed me, she'd quickly placed it inside her handbag.

At the time, she'd told me it was private business.

I told Dad everything.

His expression darkened.

"Did she say what was in the folder?""

"No. But she was talking on the phone.""

"What did she say?""

I closed my eyes, trying to remember.

"She said, 'He'll never check the old records. By the time he realizes, everything will already be transferred.''"

Michael stood abruptly.

"Daniel.""

Dad looked at him.

"I know.""

"What?"" I asked.

My father opened the folder again.

He removed a printed email.

It was dated six weeks earlier.

The sender's name was Vanessa Carter.

The recipient was a property management company.

The subject line read: FINAL TRANSFER DOCUMENTS.

I couldn't understand the rest of it.

But I recognized one name.

Mine.

Lily Carter.

"Why is my name there?"" I asked.

My father pulled the paper closer.

"Because your mother established a trust for you.""

"What kind of trust?""

"A financial trust and a legal interest in this property.""

I looked around the kitchen.

This was the house where I'd grown up.

The hallway where Mom used to hang Christmas decorations.

The back garden where she taught me to ride a bicycle.

I had always thought it belonged to Dad.

But now I was learning that it had once belonged to her.

And that she had left part of it to me.

Michael leaned against the counter.

"Your mother was very careful. She made sure the property could not be sold or transferred without certain approvals.""

"Then how could Vanessa transfer anything?"" I asked.

"That's what we're trying to establish.""

Dad stood.

"Come with me.""

We walked upstairs toward his office.

The house smelled faintly of fresh flowers and expensive furniture polish. Every room looked exactly as it had before the party.

But everything felt different.

My father unlocked the office door.

Inside, the walls were lined with bookshelves. A large oak desk stood beneath the window.

Behind it was a framed photograph of Mom holding me when I was a baby.

I hadn't seen that picture in months.

Vanessa had moved it behind several books, claiming it didn't match the office decorations.

Dad picked it up and wiped away a thin layer of dust.

"She belongs here," he murmured.

Then he walked toward the far bookshelf.

He moved three books and pressed a small brass switch.

A section of the wooden panel shifted.

Behind it was a narrow compartment.

Inside sat a small black safe.

Michael handed him a key.

The lock clicked.

Dad opened the door.

There were several envelopes, a flash drive, and a thick leather folder.

He removed the folder first.

On its cover, in my mother's handwriting, were four words:

*For Daniel and Lily.*

My father sat down.

His fingers trembled as he opened it.

The first page was a copy of my mother's will.

The second was a property agreement.

The third contained a handwritten letter.

Dad began reading silently.

Then he stopped.

His face drained of color.

"What is it?"" Michael asked.

Dad looked up.

"She knew.""

"Who knew?""

"Sarah knew someone might try to take the property after she died.""

My mother's name was Sarah.

I touched the edge of the letter.

"Can I read it?""

Dad hesitated.

Then he passed it to me.

The handwriting was familiar.

The same handwriting that had once filled my birthday cards.

My darling Lily,

If you're reading this with your father, then something has happened that I hoped you would never have to experience.

Remember that this house was built on love, not money. No one has the right to make you feel like a guest in the place where you grew up.

My eyes blurred.

I continued.

I made arrangements to protect your future. If anyone attempts to change the ownership of this property, your father must check the original documents in the blue folder.

I looked at Dad.

"Where's the blue folder?""

Michael searched the safe.

There was no blue folder.

Only a small empty space where one might once have been.

Dad slowly turned toward him.

"Vanessa.""

Michael nodded.

"She must have taken it.""

Before either man could say anything else, footsteps sounded in the hallway.

Then the office door opened.

Vanessa stood there.

Her orange cape was gone.

Her elaborate hairstyle was beginning to loosen.

She looked directly at the letter in my hands.

"Put that down, Lily.""

My father stood.

"Get out of my office.""

Vanessa ignored him.

"Daniel, we need to talk privately.""

"We're finished talking privately.""

She looked at the safe.

Then at the documents.

A strange expression crossed her face.

"You opened it.""

"Yes.""

"You shouldn't have.""

Dad stepped closer.

"Where is the blue folder?""

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

"I don't know what you're talking about.""

Michael lifted his phone.

"We have records showing you requested copies of the original property documents.""

Vanessa turned toward him.

"Stay out of this, Michael.""

"No," he replied.

"Not anymore.""

She looked back at my father.

"Daniel, think carefully. You have a daughter to protect. Do you really want to turn this into a legal nightmare?""

Dad's voice remained steady.

"That's exactly what I'm trying to prevent.""

Vanessa looked at me.

Her expression softened unnaturally.

"Lily, sweetheart, you don't understand adult matters. Why don't you go upstairs?""

I didn't move.

For the first time, I wasn't afraid to look directly at her.

"You told me I didn't belong here.""

Her jaw tightened.

"Don't start.""

"You said the boys were your real family.""

"Lily," Dad warned gently, "you don't have to explain anything to her.""

But I continued.

"Mom left something for me, didn't she?""

Vanessa's face changed.

It was only a second.

But I saw it.

She looked at the letter in my hands as if it were something dangerous.

Then she said something I would remember for the rest of my life.

"Your mother should have kept her money out of my marriage.""

The room went silent.

My father took one slow step toward her.

"What did you just say?""

Vanessa realized her mistake.

She reached for the door handle.

But Michael moved in front of it.

"Not so fast.""

And then my father's phone rang.

The caller was his attorney.

Dad answered.

He listened for several seconds.

Then his expression changed completely.

"You're sure?"" he asked.

A pause.

"Send it to me immediately.""

He ended the call.

I looked at him.

"What happened?""

He stared at Vanessa.

"The attorney found the original transfer request.""

Vanessa's hand tightened around the door handle.

May you like

Dad continued.

"And the signature on it isn't mine.""
