Chapter 9: The Last Letter From Sarah

My father read the name three times.

Eleanor Hayes.

The woman who had given birth to me.

The woman who had kept my mother's letters.

The woman who had promised to protect me.

And now her signature was attached to a request for Sarah's medical records.

"Rebecca," Dad said quietly, "call Eleanor.""

She immediately dialed the hospital.

The call went unanswered.

Dad tried again.

Nothing.

Michael picked up his phone.

"I'll call the hospital directly.""

While he made the call, Rebecca enlarged the document.

"There's something strange about this authorization.""

"What?"" Dad asked.

"The signature is dated last week, but the medical archive received the request two weeks ago.""

"Could it have been backdated?""

"Possibly.""

She examined the bottom of the page.

"And there's another signature here.""

Dad leaned closer.

A witness had signed beneath Eleanor's name.

The handwriting was familiar.

I recognized it from the blue folder.

It belonged to Vanessa.

Dad slowly stood.

"She's been using Eleanor's identity.""

Rebecca nodded.

"That's one possibility. We need to verify it.""

Michael ended his call.

"The hospital says Eleanor hasn't visited the archive.""

Dad looked at him.

"Are they certain?""

"They checked the visitor records. No appointment. No access.""

Rebecca closed the file.

"Then we have to find Eleanor.""

The following morning, we drove to the hospital where Eleanor had been receiving treatment.

Dad hadn't slept.

He kept checking his phone.

When we arrived, a nurse led us to the room where Eleanor had been staying.

The bed was empty.

A folded blanket rested near the window.

Dad approached the nurses' station.

"Excuse me. We're looking for Eleanor Hayes.""

The nurse checked her computer.

"She was discharged yesterday afternoon.""

"Did she leave voluntarily?""

"Yes.""

"Did she say where she was going?""

The nurse hesitated.

"She mentioned visiting a family friend.""

Rebecca stepped forward.

"Did anyone collect her?""

The nurse nodded.

"A woman came to pick her up.""

Dad showed her a photograph of Vanessa.

The nurse studied it.

"Yes. That's her.""

My father's face hardened.

"Vanessa took Eleanor?""

The nurse looked uncomfortable.

"She said she was Eleanor's niece.""

Rebecca immediately asked for the discharge paperwork.

The nurse hesitated.

"We can't release private medical information without authorization.""

Rebecca showed her identification and explained the legal situation.

A few minutes later, we received confirmation that Eleanor had left with Vanessa.

Dad walked outside and called the police.

I sat in the hospital waiting area.

My hands were cold.

"Why would Vanessa take her?"" I asked.

Michael sat beside me.

"Because Eleanor knows something she doesn't want anyone else to hear.""

"Is Eleanor in danger?""

He didn't answer immediately.

Then he said, "We're going to find her.""

Rebecca tracked Vanessa's car through a parking receipt found in the hospital's records.

The address led us to a small rented cottage outside Boston.

Police officers arrived before we did.

The front door was unlocked.

Inside, the living room looked as though someone had left in a hurry.

A half-finished cup of tea sat on the table.

A woman's scarf was draped over a chair.

And on the floor lay a broken picture frame.

Dad picked it up.

It contained a photograph of Eleanor and Mom.

Behind it was a handwritten note.

Sarah, I promised I would protect her. I'm sorry I couldn't keep you both safe.

Dad closed his eyes.

Then a police officer called from the hallway.

"Mr. Carter? You need to see this.""

We followed him into a small bedroom.

A suitcase stood open on the bed.

Inside were several medical documents and a stack of letters.

Rebecca examined the papers.

Then she found a sealed envelope.

It was addressed to me.

*For Lily, when she is old enough to understand.*

Dad handed it to me.

I opened it.

The handwriting was my mother's.

My darling Lily,

If you are reading this, then the secrets surrounding your birth have finally reached you.

I wish I could have explained everything myself.

When Eleanor gave birth to you, she was very ill. She asked me to raise you because she knew I could give you the stable home she desperately wanted for you.

I agreed because I loved her, but also because the moment I held you, I knew you were meant to be my daughter.

I stopped.

My eyes filled.

I continued reading.

Your biological mother did not abandon you. She gave you a chance to live in a home filled with love. And I never wanted you to feel that you had been chosen out of obligation.

You were my daughter in every way that mattered.

I pressed the letter against my chest.

Dad crouched beside me.

"Keep reading, sweetheart.""

The next paragraph was harder to understand.

There is something else. Arthur discovered that the property had valuable development rights. He wanted control of the land, and he believed your inheritance was the only obstacle.

He approached me with an agreement. He offered to pay for my treatment if I surrendered the trust.

I refused.

Dad's hand tightened around my shoulder.

Daniel, I know you will blame yourself when you learn this. Please don't. You were never supposed to know how close Arthur came to destroying everything.

I made a choice because I wanted Lily to have a future.

Then came the final paragraph.

The person who knows the full truth is not Arthur. It is the person who stood beside him when he signed the original agreement.

Look at the date on the blue folder.

Then look at the name of the witness.

I turned toward Rebecca.

She immediately opened the folder.

We searched through the documents until we found the original trust agreement.

The date was eight years earlier.

The witness signature appeared at the bottom.

*Michael Carter.*

Dad looked at his brother.

Michael stepped backward.

"Daniel, I can explain.""

My father stared at him.

"Did you witness this agreement?""

Michael shook his head.

"I never signed that document.""

Rebecca examined the signature.

"It does resemble your handwriting.""

"Someone copied it.""

Dad's voice became dangerously quiet.

"Who?""

Michael looked toward the broken window.

"I don't know.""

But then I noticed something.

A small piece of paper had been tucked inside the envelope.

It contained a handwritten message.

I picked it up.

There were only two sentences.

Michael did not sign the agreement.

He witnessed something much worse.

We returned to the car.

Dad didn't speak for several minutes.

Finally, he turned toward Michael.

"Tell me everything.""

Michael stared out the window.

"I was working at the company when Arthur began transferring money into private accounts. I discovered the payments and confronted him.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because he threatened to destroy you.""

"That's not an answer.""

Michael turned.

"He told me Sarah's treatment depended on my silence.""

Dad went completely still.

Michael continued.

"I believed him. I thought if I followed his instructions, he would leave Sarah alone.""

Dad's voice broke.

"What did he make you do?""

Michael closed his eyes.

"I witnessed a meeting between Arthur, Vanessa, and a lawyer.""

Rebecca leaned forward.

"What meeting?""

"They discussed changing the trust documents. Vanessa was supposed to become the legal controller of the property.""

Dad looked horrified.

"And Sarah?""

"She found out.""

Michael's voice dropped.

"She came to the office and confronted them.""

"What happened?""

Michael stared at his hands.

"Arthur threatened to stop paying for her treatment. Vanessa told her she would never be allowed to see Lily again if she didn't cooperate.""

Dad turned away.

I held his hand.

Michael continued.

"Sarah refused. She said she would rather lose everything than give up Lily's future.""

Dad's eyes filled.

"Why didn't you help her?""

Michael looked at him.

"Because I was a coward.""

Nobody spoke.

Then he reached inside his jacket and removed a small USB drive.

"I kept a recording.""

Rebecca took it.

"Of the meeting?""

Michael nodded.

"Everything.""

Dad stared at him.

"Why didn't you give it to the police?""

"Because I was afraid.""

"Afraid of what?""

Michael looked toward me.

"That Arthur would come after Lily.""

Dad closed his eyes.

Michael continued.

"But I can't keep doing this.""

That evening, Rebecca played the recording in Dad's office.

The audio was old and slightly distorted.

But the voices were clear.

Arthur spoke first.

"Sarah, this is your last opportunity. Sign the agreement.""

Mom answered.

"No.""

Vanessa spoke next.

"You are making this much harder than it needs to be.""

"I am protecting my daughter.""

Arthur laughed.

"She's not even yours biologically.""

Mom's voice became sharp.

"She is my daughter.""

Then came a sound like a chair scraping against the floor.

Vanessa said something I couldn't understand.

Arthur replied:

"If you don't sign, the treatment arrangements end tomorrow.""

There was a long silence.

Then Mom spoke again.

"Do whatever you want to me. But Lily will never belong to you.""

Dad covered his mouth.

The recording continued.

Arthur said, "Then you'll have to live with the consequences.""

A door slammed.

The audio ended.

Dad sat motionless.

Rebecca paused the recording.

"This is significant evidence. We'll preserve it and provide it to the investigators.""

Michael looked at his brother.

"I'm sorry.""

Dad didn't answer.

Then the office phone rang.

Rebecca picked it up.

She listened.

Her expression changed.

"Where?""

A pause.

"Are you certain?""

She ended the call.

Dad looked at her.

"What happened?""

"The police located Eleanor.""

I stood immediately.

"Is she okay?""

Rebecca nodded.

"She's safe. They found her at a private residence.""

Dad exhaled.

"Thank God.""

"But there's something else.""

"What?""

Rebecca looked at the recording equipment.

"Eleanor says she has the original medical report that explains why Sarah's treatment was interrupted.""

Dad stood.

"Then let's go see her.""

Rebecca shook her head.

"She has already agreed to meet us tomorrow morning.""

"Why wait?""

"Because she wants to bring someone with her.""

"Who?""

Rebecca looked at the note in my hand.

Then she answered.

"Arthur's former physician.""

Dad frowned.

"Why would she need him?""

Rebecca took a breath.

"Because Eleanor believes Sarah's medical treatment was deliberately interfered with, and the doctor has records proving who gave the instructions.""

I looked at Mom's letter.

For years, I had believed she had died because nothing could be done.

May you like

Now I was beginning to understand that someone might have made sure nothing was done.

And tomorrow, we would finally learn who.
