Chapter 6: The Brother Who Signed the Wrong Papers
Nobody spoke.
My father stared at the notebook.
Michael stood beside the hospital window, his coffee untouched on the table.
Rebecca carefully examined the handwritten list.
"Mr. Carter, do you know why your name appears here?""
Michael looked at Eleanor.
"I've never seen this before.""
Eleanor nodded.
"I believe you.""
Dad turned sharply.
"Then explain it.""
Michael rubbed his forehead.
"Eight years ago, I handled several administrative matters for the company. We were restructuring some property holdings. Vanessa was working with the accounting department.""
"Did you sign anything involving Sarah's house?"" Rebecca asked.
Michael hesitated.
"I signed dozens of documents during that period.""
"Do you remember a transfer authorization?""
"No.""
Eleanor spoke quietly.
"Vanessa asked me to prepare a transfer document for the property. She said Daniel had approved it.""
Dad's jaw tightened.
"Why would she ask you?""
"Because I was the only person in the department who had access to the original trust records.""
Rebecca leaned forward.
"Did you prepare the document?""
Eleanor shook her head.
"I refused. The property was protected by Sarah's trust. I told Vanessa she needed authorization from the independent guardian.""
Dad looked at the notebook.
"Which was Vanessa.""
"Yes.""
Michael finally spoke.
"Wait. I remember something.""
Everyone turned toward him.
"Vanessa brought me a document. She said it was a routine property administration form. She told me Daniel had reviewed it and only needed my countersignature.""
Dad stood.
"I never reviewed it.""
"I know that now.""
Michael's face looked sick.
"I signed it because I trusted her.""
Rebecca took out her phone.
"Do you remember when?""
"Late September. Eight years ago.""
Eleanor nodded slowly.
"That's the same month Vanessa tried to obtain the original trust records.""
Dad walked toward the window.
For several seconds, he stared outside.
Then he turned around.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Michael looked ashamed.
"Because I didn't think it mattered. I thought it was routine paperwork.""
"You signed a document affecting my daughter's inheritance without asking me?""
"I believed you had approved it.""
"And when Vanessa married me, did you ever think to mention that?""
Michael lowered his eyes.
"No.""
Dad said nothing.
That silence was worse than shouting.
We returned home in the late afternoon.
Rebecca had taken copies of Eleanor's documents and promised to arrange a forensic review.
Dad was quiet during the drive.
When we arrived, the front door was unlocked.
Vanessa's shoes were beside the staircase.
I froze.
"Is she back?""
Dad looked toward the hallway.
"Apparently.""
We entered the living room.
Vanessa was sitting on the sofa.
Noah and Ethan were beside her.
They looked frightened.
A suitcase stood near the entrance.
When Vanessa saw us, she immediately stood.
"Where have you been?""
Dad didn't answer.
She looked at me.
"Come here, Lily.""
I stayed beside him.
Vanessa sighed.
"Enough of this nonsense. The boys are upset, and you need to stop dragging everyone through your personal drama.""
Dad looked at the suitcases.
"Why are you here?""
"This is my home.""
"Not anymore.""
She laughed.
"You're not serious.""
Rebecca stepped into the room.
"Mrs. Carter, your attorney has been informed of the divorce proceedings. Any questions concerning the property should be directed through counsel.""
Vanessa looked at her with disgust.
Then her eyes settled on Michael.
"You told them?""
Michael didn't respond.
She shook her head.
"Unbelievable.""
Dad moved closer.
"Did you use my brother's signature to alter the property records?""
Vanessa's face remained still.
"What are you talking about?""
"Eight years ago. The Carter Development Group.""
Her eyes flickered.
Just once.
But Rebecca noticed.
"Mrs. Carter, we have reason to believe you submitted documents using an authorization that was not valid.""
Vanessa folded her arms.
"Your family has always been terrible at keeping records.""
Dad stepped forward.
"Answer the question.""
She looked at Michael.
"Tell him what you signed.""
Michael's voice was low.
"I signed what you told me was a routine document.""
Vanessa smiled.
"Exactly. You signed it.""
"Because I trusted you.""
"Then perhaps you shouldn't have.""
Michael stared at her.
"Did you change the documents afterward?""
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
Dad moved between them.
"Don't bother. We have the original papers.""
For the first time, Vanessa looked genuinely worried.
"Where?""
Dad didn't answer.
Her eyes moved toward me.
Then she noticed the hospital bracelet in my hand.
"Who gave you that?""
"Eleanor.""
Vanessa's expression changed completely.
"She contacted you?""
I nodded.
"She told me everything.""
Vanessa took one step forward.
"She doesn't know what she's talking about.""
"She showed us your letter.""
Vanessa stopped.
"What letter?""
"The one where you threatened her.""
Her lips parted.
Then she looked at Dad.
"You have no idea what that woman is capable of.""
Dad shook his head.
"She's the woman who gave birth to my daughter. She's also the woman you threatened because you wanted access to Lily's inheritance.""
Vanessa's face flushed.
"That money was supposed to support this family!""
"It was supposed to protect Lily.""
"She was already living in a beautiful house! She had everything!""
I looked at her.
"Then why wasn't that enough?""
Vanessa turned toward me.
"Because you don't understand what it costs to maintain this lifestyle.""
Dad's voice cut through the room.
"Stop.""
Vanessa pointed at him.
"You promised me a future. You promised me security. And now you're throwing everything away because of a girl who isn't even biologically yours!""
Dad went completely still.
Then he spoke.
"She is my daughter. I adopted her with Sarah. I raised her.
I love her. That is the only truth that matters.""
Noah began crying quietly.
Ethan held his brother's arm.
Vanessa turned toward them.
"Stop crying. Both of you.""
Noah looked up.
"Mom, can we go to Grandma's?""
Vanessa stared at him.
"What?""
"I don't want to stay here.""
Ethan nodded.
"Me neither.""
Vanessa's face tightened.
"After everything I've done for you?""
Noah wiped his eyes.
"You told us Lily was going to steal our house.""
I looked at him.
He continued.
"You said if she stayed in the family, we would have nowhere to live.""
Dad slowly turned toward Vanessa.
"Did you tell the boys that?""
She didn't answer.
Ethan spoke next.
"You said Dad was going to send us away because he loved Lily more.""
Vanessa looked furious.
"That's enough!""
But Noah shook his head.
"You also told us to hide the blue folder.""
The room went silent.
Rebecca stepped forward.
"Which blue folder?""
Vanessa grabbed Noah's shoulder.
"Go upstairs.""
He pulled away.
"No!""
His small voice shook.
"I don't want to lie anymore.""
Dad crouched in front of him.
"Noah, you're not in trouble.""
Noah looked at him.
"Mom gave us a folder and told us to put it in the old playroom cabinet. She said it was a secret game.""
Vanessa's face lost all color.
Dad slowly stood.
"Michael, check the playroom.""
Michael disappeared upstairs.
Vanessa moved toward the staircase.
"Daniel, don't.""
He blocked her.
"Why?""
She said nothing.
A few minutes later, Michael returned carrying a thick blue folder.
He placed it on the coffee table.
Rebecca opened it.
Inside were photocopies of property documents, bank statements, and several pages of correspondence.
But the final item was something none of us expected.
A handwritten agreement.
It contained Vanessa's signature.
And beneath it was another signature.
Daniel Carter.
My father's name.
Dad stared at it.
"I never signed this.""
Rebecca examined the page.
"Then we may have evidence of a second forged authorization.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"You can't prove anything.""
Rebecca turned to the last page.
"I don't need to prove it from this copy alone. We'll have the original examined.""
Then she noticed a handwritten note attached to the back.
It was dated three weeks before my mother's death.
Rebecca read it silently.
Her expression changed.
"What?"" Dad asked.
She passed him the paper.
He read the first line.
Then he looked at Michael.
"Do you recognize this?""
Michael stepped closer.
His eyes widened.
The note wasn't from Vanessa.
It was from someone inside the Carter family.
And the final sentence read:
Once Sarah is gone, Daniel will sign whatever we put in front of him.
Dad looked at his brother.
Michael shook his head.
"I didn't write that.""
Rebecca examined the signature.
"Then someone has been using your identity as well.""
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
Not loudly.
Not confidently.
It was a thin, desperate sound.
"You still don't understand.""
Dad turned toward her.
"Understand what?""
She looked at me.
"Your mother wasn't the only person who knew about the inheritance.""
She reached into her handbag and removed a small photograph.
It showed Sarah standing outside a courthouse.
Beside her was a man I had never seen before.
Vanessa placed it on the coffee table.
"Ask your brother who that man is.""
Michael stared at the photograph.
His face turned pale.
Dad picked it up.
"Michael?""
His brother slowly stepped backward.
Then he whispered five words.
"That's our father, Daniel.""
Dad looked again.
Our grandfather had died twelve years earlier.
But the date printed on the back of the photograph was from eight years ago.
Three years after his supposed death.
May you like
And beneath the date, in my mother's handwriting, were four words:
*He never really died.*
