Chapter 8: The Man Who Returned From the Dead
My father opened the door.
The old man stood beneath the porch light, wearing a charcoal overcoat and polished leather shoes.
He looked thinner than the man in the photographs.
But his eyes were unmistakable.
Arthur Carter.
My grandfather.
"Daniel," he said.
Dad didn't move.
For twelve years, he had believed this man was dead.
He had mourned him.
He had attended a funeral.
He had stood beside an empty grave.
And now the man was standing on our doorstep.
"What do you want?"" Dad asked.
Arthur glanced past him.
"I came to see my granddaughter.""
Dad immediately stepped into the doorway.
"You don't get to call her that.""
Arthur smiled faintly.
"She's still my blood.""
"That doesn't give you the right to enter this house.""
Arthur leaned on his cane.
"Can we talk?""
"No.""
"I have information about the property.""
Dad's expression hardened.
"Then give it to the attorneys.""
Arthur looked toward me.
"Lily, you look just like your mother.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
I moved closer to Dad.
"Don't talk to her," he said.
Arthur sighed.
"You've become very protective.""
"Someone has to be.""
The old man's expression changed.
Then he reached inside his coat.
Michael immediately stepped forward.
"Keep your hands where we can see them.""
Arthur slowly removed a small envelope.
"I brought something Sarah left behind.""
Dad stared at it.
"What?""
Arthur held it out.
"An original trust document.""
Rebecca, who had arrived minutes earlier, stepped onto the porch.
"Mr. Carter, I'm Rebecca Lawson, Daniel's attorney. I'll take that.""
Arthur looked at her.
"Of course. The lawyers have finally arrived.""
Rebecca accepted the envelope.
"You're going to need to explain why you've returned after twelve years.""
Arthur looked at Dad.
"Because the person who was supposed to protect this family has been stealing from it.""
Dad laughed without humor.
"You're accusing someone of stealing?""
"Don't pretend you're innocent, Daniel.""
Arthur tapped his cane against the porch.
"Your wife was hiding money. Your brother was signing documents he didn't understand. And Vanessa was the only person who understood the entire arrangement.""
Dad's face darkened.
"Vanessa was working for you.""
Arthur nodded.
"She was.""
Rebecca opened the envelope.
Inside was a document bearing Arthur's signature.
She studied it carefully.
Then she looked up.
"This document appears to have been created recently.""
Arthur's smile disappeared.
"What?""
"The paper and printing are modern. It may be a reproduction.""
Arthur took a step forward.
"That's impossible.""
Rebecca held it up.
"Where did you get this?""
Arthur didn't answer.
Dad stared at him.
"You brought us a fake document?""
Arthur's expression hardened.
"I brought you what I was given.""
"By whom?""
Arthur looked toward the house.
Then he said a name.
"Vanessa.""
We allowed Arthur inside only after Rebecca arranged for a formal recording of the meeting.
He sat in the living room.
I stayed beside Dad.
Michael stood near the window.
Rebecca placed the envelope on the coffee table.
"Let's start at the beginning," she said.
"Why did you fake your death?""
Arthur looked at Dad.
"Because the company was collapsing.""
Michael shook his head.
"That isn't true.""
Arthur ignored him.
"There were debts. Investors were threatening lawsuits. I had made several decisions that could have destroyed everything.""
"Then you should have faced the consequences," Dad replied.
Arthur gave a short laugh.
"You were young. You didn't understand what was at stake.""
"I was thirty-four.""
"Exactly.""
Dad leaned forward.
"You disappeared and let your sons believe you were dead.""
Arthur's eyes narrowed.
"I protected the family.""
Michael spoke.
"You threatened me.""
Arthur turned.
"I gave you a choice.""
"You told me Daniel would lose everything if I exposed you.""
"And you kept quiet.""
Michael looked away.
Arthur continued.
"Sarah was the problem. She had obtained control of the property through a trust, and she refused to sell.""
Dad's hands clenched.
"Because it belonged to her.""
"She had no understanding of its value.""
"She understood perfectly.""
Arthur shook his head.
"That land could have made this family one of the wealthiest in the state.""
Dad stood.
"My daughter is not a business opportunity.""
Arthur looked at me.
"Your mother was emotional. She made decisions based on feelings instead of logic.""
I finally spoke.
"She made decisions because she loved me.""
Arthur looked surprised.
Then he smiled.
"You're a clever girl.""
I didn't like the way he said it.
Rebecca interrupted.
"Mr. Carter, did you instruct Vanessa to obtain the property documents?""
Arthur looked at her.
"I instructed her to investigate the trust.""
"Did you authorize her to submit transfer requests?""
"No.""
"Did you know she had been using Michael's signature?""
Arthur paused.
"She told me Michael had approved the documents.""
Michael stared at him.
"You're lying.""
Arthur turned toward him.
"Be careful.""
Michael stepped forward.
"I was twenty-nine when you disappeared. You threatened me, and I kept your secret. But I never agreed to steal from Sarah's estate.""
Arthur looked at him with contempt.
"You were always weak.""
Dad moved between them.
"Don't speak to my brother like that.""
Arthur slowly settled back into his chair.
"Fine. You want the truth? Vanessa was supposed to make the property transfer look legitimate. I was going to return once the development agreement was approved.""
Rebecca wrote something down.
"And the money?""
Arthur looked at her.
"What money?""
"The payments made to Vanessa through several shell companies.""
Arthur's expression changed.
Dad turned toward him.
"Payments?""
Rebecca showed him the bank statements.
"These transactions were identified in the documents recovered from storage unit thirty-seven.""
Arthur looked at the pages.
Then he pushed them away.
"I don't know anything about those accounts.""
Rebecca studied him.
"That's interesting.""
"Why?""
"Because one of the accounts is registered under your current legal identity.""
Arthur said nothing.
Dad slowly looked at his father.
"You weren't just hiding.""
Arthur's eyes narrowed.
"What are you suggesting?""
"That you were still taking money from the company.""
Arthur stood.
"That's enough.""
Rebecca remained seated.
"Please sit down.""
"I have nothing more to say.""
He grabbed his cane.
But before he reached the door, I noticed something sticking out of his coat pocket.
A small photograph.
The same kind of photograph Mom had left behind.
I recognized the picture immediately.
It showed Mom holding me outside a hospital.
I stood up.
"Where did you get that?""
Arthur stopped.
He looked at the photograph.
Then at me.
"Your mother gave it to me.""
"Why?""
He hesitated.
"She wanted me to remember what I had done.""
"What did you do?""
He stared at me.
Then he quietly said:
"I was the one who paid for your mother's medical treatment.""
Dad frowned.
"What?""
Arthur looked at him.
"Sarah didn't die from the illness you were told she had.""
My father's face went completely pale.
"Don't.""
Arthur continued.
"She died after refusing to sign the property agreement.""
Dad stepped toward him.
"That's a lie.""
"Ask the doctor who treated her.""
Rebecca immediately raised her hand.
"Mr. Carter, you need to be very careful. Are you suggesting that someone interfered with Sarah's medical care?""
Arthur looked at me.
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
"I'm saying Sarah had a choice. She could have signed the papers and received the treatment she needed.""
Dad grabbed his father's coat.
"You let her die?""
Arthur didn't fight back.
He simply looked at his son.
"She made her decision.""
Dad released him.
For several seconds, he looked as if he might collapse.
Michael stepped forward.
"Daniel.""
But Dad couldn't speak.
I ran to him and wrapped my arms around his waist.
Arthur watched us.
Then he quietly walked toward the door.
Rebecca didn't stop him.
Not yet.
But before leaving, he turned around.
"Daniel, you should know something. Sarah left a final document. It explains why she chose Eleanor to give birth to Lily and why she refused to let you know the full story.""
Dad looked up.
"Where is it?""
Arthur smiled faintly.
"With the person who has been protecting you all these years.""
"Who?""
Arthur glanced at Michael.
Then he walked out.
After he left, Rebecca immediately contacted the hospital and requested Sarah's original medical records.
Dad sat in the living room holding the photograph.
Michael paced back and forth.
I stayed beside my father.
"Was Mom sick?""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
"Could she have gotten better?""
His eyes filled.
"I don't know, sweetheart.""
I looked at the photograph.
"Did Grandpa hurt her?""
Dad pulled me close.
"I won't let anyone hide the truth from us again.""
Rebecca returned from the hallway.
She had been speaking to her investigator.
"Daniel, there's something you need to know.""
He looked up.
"Go ahead.""
"The original medical file was never destroyed. It was transferred to a private archive after Sarah's death.""
"Where?""
Rebecca checked her notes.
"At a medical records facility in Boston.""
Dad stood.
"Then we're going there.""
Rebecca hesitated.
"There's a complication.""
"What?""
"The file was accessed last week.""
Michael stopped pacing.
"By whom?""
Rebecca looked at her phone.
Then she turned the screen toward us.
The access request had been made under a name we all recognized.
*Vanessa Carter.*
Dad stared at the screen.
But the next detail was even worse.
May you like
The request had been approved by someone whose signature appeared at the bottom.
*Eleanor Hayes.*
