Chapter 5: The Signature He Never Remembered

David stared at the authorization form until the words seemed to blur.
The document carried his full name, a date, and a digital signature that resembled the one he used for routine business approvals. Beneath it was a list of permissions covering several household-related accounts.
The access included viewing balances, managing payment instructions, and initiating certain transfers.
It was precisely the kind of document he would have signed if he had knowingly granted someone financial authority.
But he had no memory of signing it.
“Jordan,” he said carefully, “where did this file come from?””
Jordan leaned over his shoulder.
“It was in the folder with the receipts. I didn't create it.””
“Did you see anyone open it?””
“No.””
David studied the date again.
Three weeks earlier.
That was the week Vanessa had complained about spending hours organizing the household finances. She had brought a stack of paperwork into his office one evening, asking him to sign several routine forms.
He remembered sitting at his desk while answering work emails.
He remembered a pen.
He remembered Vanessa saying, “Just the usual paperwork, David. Nothing complicated.””
Had this been among those pages?
He couldn't be certain.
“Is it real?”” Maya asked.
David turned toward her.
“I don't know yet.””
“But it has your signature.””
“It looks like my signature.””
“What's the difference?””
He paused.
“The difference is that a signature can be copied, a document can be altered, and an authorization can be misunderstood. I'm not going to decide what happened until I know.””
Jordan looked relieved that his father wasn't immediately blaming anyone.
Vanessa's voice suddenly came from the hallway.
“Are you seriously still going through my private files?””
She stood in the doorway holding her phone.
David closed the document but left the laptop open.
“Your private files were stored with records from my travel account.””
“They were on Jordan's computer.””
“Because you asked him to print the confirmations.””
“I did not ask him to investigate me.””
Jordan pushed his chair back.
“I wasn't investigating you, Mom. I was printing the tickets.””
Vanessa pointed at him.
“Then you should have stopped when the printer stopped working.””
“Why?”” Jordan asked.
“Was there something you didn't want us to see?””
Her mouth tightened.
“Do you hear yourself?””
“Every time I ask you a question, you tell me to shut up or leave the room.””
“I am your mother.””
“And Dad is my father. Maya is my sister. Why does it feel like we're only allowed to hear your side?””
Vanessa looked as though he had struck her.
David stepped between them.
“Enough. Nobody is shouting at anyone.””
He turned back to the laptop.
“I need the original authorization document, not just a preview. Jordan, can you save a copy without altering the original file?””
Jordan nodded.
“I can duplicate it.””
“Do that. Don't delete or edit anything.””
As Jordan worked, David took out his phone and called the bank's fraud department.
He placed the call on speaker so he could take notes.
After verifying his identity through the bank's normal security process, he explained that he had discovered an unfamiliar refund destination and an authorization document he did not remember approving.
The representative asked whether he suspected an unauthorized transfer.
David looked at Vanessa.
“I suspect that money was redirected without my informed approval. I need to know what the bank can verify.””
The representative explained that she could open a review, flag the relevant transactions for investigation, and advise him about securing the accounts. She could not immediately disclose the identity of the recipient through the phone call, but she could explain the next steps.
David gave her the transaction reference.
As she checked the record, Maya sat on the edge of Jordan's bed.
She had stopped crying, but her eyes were swollen.
Caleb stood beside her.
“I'm sorry,” he whispered.
Maya looked up.
“For what?””
“For laughing when Jordan said you were the housekeeper.””
“You didn't know all this was happening.””
“I still laughed.””
She studied his face.
He looked younger than fourteen at that moment.
“I was hurt,” Maya admitted.
“But I'm not going to make you feel worse just because you're finally being honest.””
Caleb nodded, his eyes fixed on the carpet.
Across the room, Vanessa watched them.
For a fleeting moment, something like guilt crossed her face.
Then her phone vibrated.
She checked the screen and immediately turned it facedown.
David noticed.
“Who was that?””
“No one.””
“Someone you need to call?””
“No.””
“Then why did you look frightened?””
Vanessa lifted her chin.
“I am frightened. My husband is treating me like a thief, my sons are questioning everything I say, and my stepdaughter is standing there as though I've ruined her life.””
Maya's shoulders tightened.
David's voice grew colder.
“You canceled her ticket, sent the refund somewhere I don't recognize, and now we've found an authorization document I don't remember signing. You don't get to make her responsible for your discomfort.””
Vanessa blinked rapidly.
“I did not steal from Maya.””
“Then help us establish where the money went.””
“I can't do that while you're attacking me.””
“I'm asking you to cooperate with the bank.””
She looked away.
The bank representative returned to the line.
“Mr. Harris, I've opened a case. I recommend that you secure your online banking credentials, review any active permissions, and avoid making changes to the records connected with the disputed transactions until our investigation team advises you. We can also provide the available transaction history through the secure account portal.””
David thanked her and ended the call after receiving the case reference.
He immediately changed his online banking password and reviewed the authorized devices and account permissions through the bank's official security settings.
The process revealed several recent access events.
He saved the records.
Then he looked at the authorization document Jordan had copied.
The digital signature appeared identical to the one on several legitimate documents in his work files.
That didn't prove he had approved this particular authorization.
It did mean the question was no longer simply where the refund had gone.
Someone had obtained access to his financial information.
Possibly with permission.
Possibly without it.
David rubbed a hand over his beard.
“Vanessa, I need you to tell me exactly what you asked me to sign three weeks ago.””
She stared at him.
“I don't remember every piece of paperwork.””
“Was there a bank authorization?””
“I handle paperwork all the time.””
“That isn't an answer.””
She looked toward the boys.
Jordan had stopped working on the laptop.
Caleb stood beside Maya, silently watching his mother.
Vanessa seemed to realize that she could no longer control the conversation by telling everyone to leave.
Finally, she spoke.
“There was a form related to the household account.””
“What did it authorize?””
“I don't remember the wording.””
“Did you explain it to me?””
“I told you it was routine.””
David's face fell.
“Did you give me the entire document to read?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
He felt something cold settle in his stomach.
He could remember signing a stack of papers while distracted. He could remember trusting the woman standing in front of him.
He could not remember authorizing her to redirect refunds.
“Did you use my signature to activate access to these accounts?”” he asked.
Vanessa shook her head.
“I did not forge your signature.””
“That wasn't my question.””
“I didn't forge anything.””
“Then what did you do?””
She pressed her fingers to her temples.
“You don't understand how difficult it has been managing this household. You travel. You work late. Every decision falls on me.””
“That doesn't explain the transfer.””
“I was trying to make things easier.””
“For whom?””
Her eyes flashed.
“For all of us!””
The shout startled Caleb.
Vanessa immediately lowered her voice.
“You have no idea what it takes to keep this family running. Maya needs everything explained to her. The boys need opportunities.
The house needs maintenance. The bills never stop. I was trying to organize things so we wouldn't have to discuss every little expense.””
David watched her carefully.
“Then why did you send the refund to a separate account?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
He waited.
At last, she said, “Because the original payment method wasn't available for the refund.””
David looked down at his phone.
“The bank says the destination was specified through the booking profile.””
“I don't know what that means.””
“It means someone selected where the money went.””
Vanessa's face tightened.
For a few seconds, she appeared to be calculating how much she could admit without revealing more.
Then she said, “I moved the refund because I intended to reconcile it later.””
“Reconcile it with what?””
She looked at the floor.
“Household expenses.””
David's heart began to pound.
“Which expenses?””
Vanessa did not answer.
He stepped back from the desk.
“I'm asking one final time. Did you transfer other money from the household accounts to that same destination?””
Her silence was answer enough to make him afraid.
But it was not proof of exactly what had happened.
He would not let suspicion become a verdict.
He picked up his phone and photographed the printed transfer notice, keeping the full account details out of the images. Then he told Jordan to preserve the documents without forwarding them to anyone else.
Maya watched her father work.
The vacation had vanished from her mind. In its place was a growing realization that the people who had shared her home might have been hiding things from one another for a long time.
“Dad,” she said quietly, “if the money wasn't supposed to go there, can we get it back?””
David turned toward her.
“We'll ask the bank to trace it. I can't promise the outcome yet, but I promise I won't ignore it.””
She nodded.
Then she looked at Vanessa.
“Was the money for my ticket really the only reason you didn't want me to go?””
Vanessa's face crumpled for an instant.
“Yes,” she said.
Maya waited.
Her stepmother's gaze dropped to the floor.
“No,” Vanessa whispered.
“It wasn't the only reason.””
David went still.
“What else?””
Vanessa looked toward the open bedroom door.
May you like
Her voice fell to a whisper.
“Your mother left something in Miami, Maya. Something your father was never supposed to find.””
