Chapter 7: The Woman Wearing Her Mother’s Necklace

“Her name is Evelyn Brooks.””

Vanessa said it so quietly that David almost missed it.

Maya didn't.

She repeated the name under her breath, searching through the scattered memories of her childhood for someone who might fit it. Evelyn Brooks. The woman in the photograph wore her mother's necklace, stood outside a storage facility in Miami, and had apparently helped Vanessa move Renee's belongings.

“Who is she?”” Maya asked.

Vanessa sank onto the edge of Jordan's bed.

“Evelyn worked with your mother years ago. They knew each other before Renee got sick.””

“Worked where?”” David demanded.

“At a financial services company in Atlanta. Your mother handled administrative work there for a while.””

David stared at her.

“Renee was a graphic designer.””

“She did that later.””

“Later than what?””

Vanessa rubbed her forehead.

“You're making me explain twenty years of history in five minutes.””

“No. I'm asking why a woman I have never heard of is wearing my dead wife's necklace, standing outside a storage facility in Miami, after you redirected my daughter's refund and admitted you were afraid she'd go there.””

Vanessa flinched.

Jordan moved closer to Caleb.

The brothers exchanged a look that Maya had never seen between them before. They weren't joking. They weren't rolling their eyes at their sister. They were watching their mother as though they were realizing that the woman who had raised them might have a life they knew nothing about.

David held out his hand toward Vanessa's phone.

“May I see the entire message?””

She hesitated, then passed it to him.

He didn't open any private applications or scroll through unrelated conversations. He simply examined the visible message and the photograph Vanessa had received.

The sender's number was unfamiliar.

The photograph appeared to have been taken recently. A timestamp in the message indicated that it had arrived less than a minute earlier.

David took a photograph of the screen with his own phone.

“I'm not deleting anything,” he said.

“We're preserving this.””

Vanessa stared at the image.

“Evelyn shouldn't have sent that.””

“Why?””

“Because she promised me she would leave the past alone.””

“What past?””

Vanessa looked at Maya.

“The things your mother discovered before she died.””

Maya's throat tightened.

“What did Mom discover?””

Vanessa opened her mouth, then looked at the boys.

David followed her gaze.

“Jordan, Caleb, I need you to take your sister downstairs for a minute.””

Maya stiffened.

“No.””

David turned to her.

“I'm not asking you to leave because you don't deserve to hear this. I'm asking because I want to establish what we know before everyone starts talking over each other.””

“That's what everybody keeps saying.””

He paused.

“You're right. I've asked you to wait too many times today. But I won't make you stand here while Vanessa decides whether to tell the truth. You can stay if you want.””

Maya looked at him, surprised.

Then she faced Vanessa.

“I want to hear everything.””

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“Renee and Evelyn worked together at a company called Northbridge Financial. They weren't just colleagues. They were close friends.””

“Why didn't Dad know?””

“Because I didn't know your father yet.””

David folded his arms.

“Continue.””

Vanessa drew a shaky breath.

“Evelyn was the person who introduced me to Renee. We met through a mutual friend when I was in my twenties. At first, I only knew Renee socially. Later, when she began investigating some irregular financial records at Northbridge, she asked me for help.””

David went still.

“Investigating what?””

“Transfers that didn't match the company's records.””

“Was Evelyn involved?””

“I don't know.””

“Did you help Renee?””

Vanessa looked down at her wedding ring.

“I helped her organize documents.””

Maya stepped closer.

“Were you friends with my mother?””

Vanessa's expression crumpled.

“Yes.””

“Then why did you act like she was something you had to erase?””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

For several seconds, the only sound in the bedroom was the hum of Jordan's laptop.

Finally, Vanessa spoke.

“Because every time I looked at you, I remembered what happened.””

David's voice sharpened.

“What happened?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Renee believed someone had been moving money through accounts that were supposed to be legitimate. She found transactions connected to employees and outside contractors. Some records had been changed after the money moved.””

“Was money missing?””

“Yes.””

“How much?””

“I don't know the total.””

“Did Renee report it?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She contacted the company's compliance department. Then she started keeping copies of records outside the office.””

David looked at the photograph of Evelyn.

“And the storage facility?””

Vanessa's hands trembled.

“Renee told Evelyn that she needed somewhere safe to keep the copies. Evelyn arranged storage in Miami after Renee became ill.””

Maya remembered the blue envelope.

Her mother's handwriting.

The promise about a surprise she would understand when she was older.

“Was the envelope part of those records?”” she asked.

Vanessa nodded.

“I believe so.””

David looked as though someone had pulled the air from his lungs.

“Renee was investigating financial misconduct while she was sick, and you knew about it?””

“I knew she had discovered something. I didn't know everything.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because she asked me not to.””

David stared at her.

“She asked you to hide things from her husband?””

“She was afraid. She thought the people involved might retaliate if they knew how much she had copied.””

“And you kept that secret for years?””

Vanessa began to cry.

“I thought the investigation had ended when she died.””

Maya's voice was thin.

“Did Mom die because of what she found?””

David immediately turned toward her.

“Sweetheart—”

“No.”” Maya shook her head.

“I want the truth. Did something happen to Mom because of those records?””

Vanessa looked horrified.

“I don't know. I have no evidence that anyone harmed Renee.””

“Then why are you afraid?””

“Because after she died, I started receiving messages.””

David's face hardened.

“What messages?””

“Warnings. People asking whether I'd kept any copies. Someone called my office and told me to stop looking into Renee's records.””

“Why didn't you tell the police?””

“Because I didn't know who was involved, and I was afraid for my sons.””

Jordan stared at her.

“You never told us any of this.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“By telling Maya she had to stay home alone?””

Vanessa looked away.

Jordan's words landed with brutal simplicity.

David took a slow breath.

“Did you transfer money into the account shown on Maya's refund?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

“Whose account is it?””

“Evelyn's.””

Maya felt her stomach drop.

“You sent my ticket money to the woman who took Mom's things?””

“I was trying to pay for information.””

David stared at her.

“You used my daughter's refund to pay someone?””

“I didn't think the refund would be that complicated. I intended to replace the money.””

“With what?””

Vanessa said nothing.

David's anger rose, but he forced himself to remain precise.

“How much have you transferred to Evelyn?””

“I don't know the exact amount.””

“Did she ask you to send it?””

Vanessa nodded.

“What did she promise in return?””

“To give me the remaining records. She said she had found something Renee left behind.””

“What?””

Vanessa looked at Maya.

“A letter.””

The word seemed to stop the room.

Maya's eyes filled.

“A letter from Mom?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Evelyn said Renee wrote it shortly before she died. She said it was meant for you.””

Maya pressed a hand against her chest.

“Then why didn't you just tell Dad? Why didn't you let me go to Miami?””

“Because I was afraid the letter would reveal what I'd done.””

David's expression turned cold.

“What have you done, Vanessa?””

She began shaking her head.

“I never stole Renee's money. I never touched anything that belonged to her.””

“That wasn't my question.””

Vanessa looked toward the laptop.

“I found some of the records after the funeral. I thought they were ordinary financial papers. I didn't understand what they meant until Evelyn contacted me last year.””

“And then?””

“Then she told me that Renee had been right. The money had moved through several accounts, and someone had used our names to disguise some of the transfers.””

David's jaw tightened.

“Did you participate?””

“No!””

Her answer was immediate.

“I was frightened, David. I didn't know whether Evelyn was telling the truth. She said she'd explain everything if I helped her retrieve the remaining documents.””

“So you paid her.””

“Yes.””

“With household money.””

Vanessa nodded.

“And when I couldn't explain the expense, I moved the amounts between accounts.””

David stared at her.

“You used money from our household to conceal payments you didn't want me to see.””

“I intended to pay it back.””

“That's not the same as being honest.””

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

“I know.””

Maya looked at the photograph again.

Evelyn's face remained turned away, but the silver pendant was unmistakable.

“Does she still have Mom's things?””

“I think so.””

“Then we need to go to Miami.””

David turned toward his daughter.

“We will. But we aren't walking into a situation we don't understand.””

Maya's voice broke.

“Dad, she wrote me a letter. Mom wrote me a letter, and everyone has been hiding it from me.””

David crossed the room and took both her hands.

“I know. And I'm sorry.””

“You didn't know.””

“I knew you were hurting. I knew you deserved answers. I should have looked harder for that envelope.””

Maya leaned into him, and he held her while she cried.

Across the room, Vanessa watched them with a devastated expression.

Then her phone vibrated again.

This time, the message appeared on the lock screen before she could turn it away.

*Evelyn: Bring the original authorization. No copies. If David comes, the girl never gets the letter.*

David read it.

He slowly released Maya's hands.

“What original authorization?””

Vanessa looked at him.

Her tears stopped.

For the first time, she seemed to understand that Evelyn wasn't merely withholding information.

May you like

She was making demands.

And whatever was inside that missing envelope, Evelyn was willing to use Maya to get it.
