Chapter 3: The Promise
“Monique.””
She didn't answer.
Adrian held up the phone.
“What did you promise him?””
Monique stared at the message as if it had appeared from a grave.
“I don't want to do this tonight.””
“We're doing it tonight.””
“Adrian, please.””
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
But there was something final about it.
“You let me believe Marcus walked away because he didn't care.””
“He didn't.””
“You just told me he didn't leave the way I thought he did.””
“I said there was more to it.””
“Then tell me.””
Monique stood and walked to the counter.
She opened a cabinet.
Her hands shook as she reached behind a stack of old plates.
Adrian watched.
She pulled out a small metal box.
She placed it on the table.
“What is that?””
“My past.””
She unlocked it.
Inside were photographs, folded letters, an old driver's license, and several documents tied together with faded blue ribbon.
Adrian stared.
“Why have you kept this?””
“Because I couldn't throw it away.””
“What's in the letters?””
“Some are from Marcus.””
Adrian picked up the first envelope.
The handwriting was bold.
He opened it.
The paper inside was dated fourteen years earlier.
He read the first line.
Then stopped.
“What is this?””
Monique sat down.
“Read it.””
Adrian continued.
His face changed.
The letter wasn't a goodbye.
It wasn't an apology.
It was a warning.
Marcus had written that someone was threatening him.
He claimed the debt wasn't entirely his.
He said he had discovered something about Monique's family.
He said if he disappeared, Adrian was never to be told.
Adrian lowered the letter.
“Why would he write that?””
“Because he thought you would go looking for him.””
“I should have.””
“No.””
Monique's eyes met his.
“You would have gotten hurt.””
Adrian laughed without humor.
“You don't get to decide that.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“You were protecting yourself.””
Monique flinched.
Adrian picked up another letter.
“This one?””
“I never opened it.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Marcus told me not to.””
Adrian stared at her.
“Then why did you keep it?””
“Because I was afraid I'd need it.””
He opened it.
This letter was shorter.
Marcus wrote that he had arranged to leave town.
But there was one sentence that made Adrian's stomach tighten.
*If Jasmine ever comes looking for me, tell her the truth about her mother.*
Adrian slowly looked up.
“What truth?””
Monique's eyes filled.
“I don't know.””
“You're saying you don't know?””
“I never found out what he meant.””
“Then why are you terrified?””
“I have my reasons.””
Adrian dropped the letter onto the table.
“No more secrets.””
Monique covered her face.
“I thought I could fix everything.””
“You can't fix fourteen years by hiding more.””
“I know.””
“No. You don't.””
His phone buzzed again.
This time it wasn't Marcus.
It was Jasmine.
*Can we talk?*
Adrian stared at the message.
Monique whispered, “What did she say?””
“She wants to talk.””
“Go.””
He looked at her.
“Are you coming?””
Monique shook her head.
“She needs to talk to you alone.””
Adrian grabbed his keys.
He drove to the university parking lot.
The campus had emptied.
The graduation banners still hung from the lampposts.
A few pieces of confetti blew across the pavement.
Jasmine stood beneath the auditorium steps.
Her graduation cap was gone.
Her braids moved in the evening breeze.
When she saw Adrian, she stepped forward.
“Thank you for coming.””
Adrian stopped several feet away.
“What do you want?””
Jasmine swallowed.
“I owe you an apology.””
He said nothing.
“I shouldn't have thrown the flowers.””
“No.””
“I was angry.””
“I noticed.””
She looked down.
“I didn't mean to hurt you.””
Adrian's expression remained guarded.
“You did.””
“I know.””
Silence stretched between them.
Finally Jasmine said, “Marcus told me things.””
“I know.””
“He said you never wanted me.””
Adrian's eyes hardened.
“That's a lie.””
“He said Mom married you because she needed money.””
Adrian froze.
“What?””
Jasmine looked up.
“He said you weren't supposed to stay.””
Adrian took a slow breath.
“Did he tell you what I did for you?””
“Yes.””
“Then why believe him?””
“Because he showed me proof.””
Adrian stared at her.
“What proof?””
Jasmine reached into her purse.
She pulled out several folded papers.
“He sent these to me.””
Adrian took them.
Bank statements.
Old legal documents.
Photographs.
His eyes moved across the pages.
Then stopped.
One document had his signature.
But Adrian knew immediately that he had never signed it.
He looked at Jasmine.
“Where did you get this?””
“Marcus.””
“When?””
“Last night.””
Adrian turned the paper over.
There was a handwritten note on the back.
His stomach dropped.
Jasmine watched his face.
“What does it say?””
Adrian didn't answer.
He recognized the handwriting.
It wasn't Marcus's.
It belonged to someone he had trusted.
Someone who had been beside him for fourteen years.
Someone who had watched him sacrifice everything.
Someone who had known exactly what the truth could destroy.
Jasmine stepped closer.
“Adrian?””
He looked at her.
Then toward the dark auditorium.
“Jasmine…”
His voice broke.
“Your mother didn't tell you the whole story.””
Behind them, a car door slammed.
Both turned.
A man stepped out beneath the courtyard lights.
Marcus.
He smiled.
