Chapter 6: What She Signed

The warehouse stood behind an abandoned textile plant on the edge of town.

Adrian remembered the place.

It had been closed for years.

Broken windows.

Rusting metal doors.

Weeds pushing through cracked pavement.

Marcus parked beneath a dead streetlight.

“Stay behind me,” he said.

Adrian looked at him.

“You don't give me orders.””

Marcus almost smiled.

“Fair.””

They walked inside.

The air smelled like dust and old machinery.

Their footsteps echoed.

Adrian's phone flashlight swept across stacks of wooden crates.

“Where are the records?”” he asked.

Marcus pointed toward an office above the factory floor.

“Upstairs.””

They climbed.

The office door was already open.

Inside sat a cardboard box.

Adrian approached it.

Marcus grabbed his arm.

“Wait.””

Adrian stopped.

Marcus scanned the room.

“It's too easy.””

A light flicked on.

Darren stood in the doorway.

Adrian's stomach dropped.

“Darren.””

Darren smiled.

“You always were too trusting.””

Adrian stared at him.

“You stole from Jasmine.””

“I moved money.””

“You stole it.””

“Words.””

“You forged my signature.””

Darren shrugged.

“You signed plenty of things.””

“Not that.””

Darren's smile disappeared.

“You have no idea how much paperwork passes through your hands.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Where are the original records?””

Darren laughed.

“Still trying to play hero?””

“I don't need to play.””

Marcus pointed at him.

“You're finished.””

Darren's eyes narrowed.

“No. I'm not.””

Adrian moved toward the box.

Darren said, “Don't.””

Adrian ignored him.

He opened it.

Inside were financial records, property documents, bank statements, and one thick folder.

Adrian picked it up.

His name was written on the front.

He opened it.

The first page showed a transfer.

The second showed another.

The third made his blood run cold.

It was a contract.

His house.

Transferred into another person's name.

Adrian stared.

“What's this?””

Darren said nothing.

Marcus took the document.

“Monique signed this.””

Adrian's eyes moved across the page.

There was her signature.

Then another signature beneath it.

Adrian's.

His forged signature.

He looked at Darren.

“You put my name on this.””

Darren smiled.

“She gave permission.””

“She couldn't give permission for me.””

“She was your wife.””

“That isn't how ownership works.””

Darren laughed.

“You're finally learning.””

Marcus flipped through the folder.

“This isn't the original.””

“No.””

“Where is it?””

Darren smiled.

“You're looking at it.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

Darren tapped the page.

“This is the original.””

Adrian stared.

Then noticed something.

A small stamp in the corner.

He recognized it.

“County clerk.””

Marcus looked closer.

“It's been filed.””

Darren nodded.

“Six years ago.””

Adrian's face hardened.

“My house has been transferred for six years?””

“Yes.””

“Who owns it?””

Darren said nothing.

Marcus looked at the final page.

Then his expression changed.

“Jasmine.””

Adrian stared.

“What?””

Marcus turned the document around.

The property had been transferred into Jasmine's name.

Adrian's mouth went dry.

Darren smiled.

“Your house is hers.””

Adrian looked at Marcus.

“Why?””

Marcus answered slowly.

“Because Jasmine's trust required an asset.””

Darren nodded.

“Exactly.””

Adrian's mind raced.

“You used my house to secure the trust.””

“No.””

Darren's smile widened.

“We used the trust to secure your house.””

Adrian stepped toward him.

“You've been using us against each other.””

“Of course.””

“Why?””

“Because it worked.””

Marcus clenched his fists.

Darren continued.

“Jasmine hated you because Marcus told her you replaced him.””

He looked at Adrian.

“You hated Marcus because you thought he abandoned her.””

Then he looked toward the door.

“And Monique hated herself enough to sign whatever I put in front of her.””

Adrian's face twisted.

“You destroyed a family.””

Darren shook his head.

“No.””

He smiled.

“You did that yourselves.””

A sound came from downstairs.

Footsteps.

Adrian looked toward the stairwell.

Darren smiled.

“You brought someone?””

Marcus reached for his phone.

“No.””

Another set of footsteps.

Then Jasmine's voice echoed from below.

“Adrian?””

His blood ran cold.

“What are you doing here?””

Jasmine appeared at the bottom of the stairs.

Monique was behind her.

Marcus turned toward them.

“I told you to stay home.””

Jasmine shook her head.

“I'm done staying home while everyone decides what I deserve to know.””

Darren's smile disappeared.

Monique looked at him.

“You said they wouldn't be here.””

Adrian turned sharply.

“What did you say?””

Monique froze.

Marcus stared at her.

“You knew Darren was here?””

“No.””

Darren laughed.

“Of course she knew.””

Monique shook her head.

“I didn't know he would bring you here.””

Adrian stared.

“You brought Jasmine?””

“I thought we needed to finish this.””

“Finish what?””

Monique's eyes filled.

“The truth.””

She walked upstairs.

Darren watched her carefully.

Then Monique looked at Jasmine.

“I lied to you.””

Jasmine whispered, “I know.””

“No.””

Monique shook her head.

“You don't know all of it.””

She took a breath.

“When your grandfather died, he left the trust.””

Jasmine nodded.

“Marcus told me.””

“He left something else.””

Monique opened the metal box she'd carried from home.

She removed a small envelope.

“I was supposed to give you this on your twenty-second birthday.””

Jasmine took it.

Her hands trembled.

“Why didn't you?””

“Because I was afraid of what you'd find.””

Jasmine opened the envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

Her grandfather stood beside a younger Marcus.

But there was another person in the picture.

A man Jasmine had never seen.

Adrian leaned closer.

He recognized him.

His face went pale.

“No.””

Marcus stared at the photograph.

“What?””

Adrian pointed.

“That man.””

Marcus looked.

His expression collapsed.

“You know him?””

Adrian nodded slowly.

“I've been looking at his name for years.””

“Who is he?”” Jasmine asked.

Adrian couldn't answer.

Monique did.

“He was your grandfather's attorney.””

Darren suddenly moved.

Marcus grabbed him.

The two men slammed into the wall.

“Give me the photograph!”” Darren shouted.

Marcus shoved him back.

“Why?””

Darren's composure finally cracked.

“Because she can't see the rest!””

Jasmine stepped backward.

“What rest?””

Adrian looked at Darren.

“You're afraid.””

Darren stopped.

Adrian understood.

For the first time that night, Darren wasn't in control.

Adrian reached for the box.

“There are more records.””

Darren lunged.

Marcus blocked him.

The box fell.

Papers scattered across the floor.

One document slid beneath Jasmine's shoe.

She picked it up.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Then she stopped breathing.

“Adrian.””

He turned.

“What?””

She held it out.

“This is your signature.””

Adrian looked.

His stomach dropped.

It was not forged.

It was his actual signature.

Dated fourteen years earlier.

The night Marcus disappeared.

Below it was a sentence that made everyone silent.

*I, Adrian Cole, agree to assume full financial and parental responsibility for Jasmine Carter in exchange for the immediate transfer of all remaining trust assets to the designated guardian.*

Adrian stared at the page.

“I never signed this.””

Marcus looked at Monique.

Monique shook her head.

“I didn't do that.””

Darren smiled.

“You're finally getting close.””

Jasmine's voice trembled.

“Who signed it?””

Darren looked directly at Adrian.

Then he said quietly:

“Ask yourself where you were the night Marcus disappeared.””

Adrian's eyes widened.

He remembered.

A hotel.

A business trip.

A signature he'd been asked to provide for an unrelated property deal.

A man he'd never met before who had brought him papers.

Adrian's voice came out barely above a whisper.

“I remember that night.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“What happened?””

Adrian stared at the document.

“I was told I was signing a property authorization.””

Darren smiled.

“It was never a property authorization.””

Jasmine looked at Adrian.

“Then what did you sign?””

Before he could answer, the warehouse lights suddenly went out.

A door slammed somewhere below.

Then a man's voice rose from the darkness.

“Because Adrian wasn't supposed to be the one who raised her.””

The voice was unfamiliar.

Marcus whispered one word.

“Eleanor?””

And from the darkness came a woman's answer.

“No.””

The emergency lights flickered on.

A woman stood at the bottom of the stairs.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Holding a file against her chest.

She looked directly at Jasmine.

“My name is Rebecca Price.””

May you like

She raised the file.

“And I know who your real legal guardian was supposed to be.””
