Chapter 2: The Documents Nobody Was Supposed to See

Alexander Hayes had never considered himself a jealous man.

He had built his reputation on discipline, patience, and the ability to remain calm when everyone else lost control.

He was thirty-four, a successful investment attorney, and the only son of a family that had spent generations protecting its reputation.

He had married Brianna eleven months earlier.

He had believed he was marrying the woman he loved.

Now he stood beneath a chandelier worth more than his first apartment, holding photographs that suggested his marriage had been built on a lie.

“Answer me,” Alexander said.

Brianna stared at the floor.

“Alex, please. Not here.””

“Not here?””

His voice cracked slightly.

“You made me stand in front of two hundred people tonight and accept congratulations about our baby. You let me talk about our future. And now you're telling me not to ask questions because there are witnesses?””

Victoria stepped between them.

“Alexander, you're upsetting her. She's pregnant.””

He turned toward her.

“Mrs. Hayes, with all due respect, I think I've earned an explanation.””

Victoria's expression hardened.

“Watch your tone.””

Richard gave a short, humorless laugh.

“Victoria, I suggest you stop pretending you have authority over this room.””

The older woman turned toward him.

“You have no right to humiliate my daughter.””

Richard leaned on his cane.

“Your daughter humiliated my granddaughter in front of every guest here. I simply decided that everyone deserved to see the truth.””

Brianna's hands shook.

“Grandpa, those pictures are misleading.””

Richard looked at her.

“Are they?””

“Yes!””

“Then identify the man.””

She swallowed.

Alexander held up the photograph.

“Who is he?””

Brianna looked toward her mother.

Victoria immediately shook her head.

“Don't answer anything while you're upset.””

Richard's expression grew colder.

“Interesting advice from someone who knew exactly what was happening.””

Victoria froze.

Alexander turned sharply.

“You knew?””

“I didn't say that.””

“You just told her not to answer!””

Victoria looked around at the guests, realizing too late that every word was being heard.

Brianna finally spoke.

“His name is Derek.””

Alexander lowered the photograph.

“Derek what?””

“Derek Mitchell.””

“Who is he?””

“He was someone I knew before we got married.””

Alexander stared at her.

“Before we got married?””

Richard slid another photograph across the table.

The date was visible.

Six weeks after the wedding.

Alexander looked down.

Then he looked up again.

“Six weeks after we got married?””

Brianna began crying.

“It wasn't serious.””

“Then why were you holding his hand?””

“I was confused!””

“You were confused?””

Alexander gave a disbelieving laugh.

“I was paying the mortgage on our house while you were meeting another man?””

Victoria stepped closer.

“This is a family matter.””

“No,” Alexander replied.

“It became everyone's business when your daughter lied to me.””

A waiter approached with a tray, then immediately turned away when he noticed the tension.

The room felt smaller.

Evelyn watched from her wheelchair.

She knew what it felt like to be trapped in a room where everyone was waiting for you to explain yourself.

But this time, she wasn't the person being questioned.

She was the person watching the truth finally catch up with someone who had spent years making her feel worthless.

Marcus moved beside her.

“Are you okay?””

Evelyn nodded.

“I'm just trying to understand why Grandpa planned all this.””

Marcus glanced toward Richard.

“I don't think he's finished.””

Across the room, Brianna suddenly grabbed Alexander's sleeve.

“Listen to me. Derek meant nothing.””

Alexander removed her hand.

“Then why is there a hotel receipt?””

She looked toward the box.

He had found a small folded document tucked beneath the photographs.

A receipt from a luxury hotel in Manhattan.

Two guests.

A weekend reservation.

The date was less than four months ago.

Alexander's expression changed.

“Were you with him while I was visiting my father?””

Brianna said nothing.

“Were you?””

“I didn't know how to tell you.””

“Tell me what?””

She pressed her hands against her belly.

“I'm scared.””

For a moment, Alexander looked as if he might soften.

Then he noticed the final page in the envelope.

A laboratory report.

He lifted it.

The room fell silent again.

“This says there was a prenatal paternity test.””

Brianna's eyes widened.

“Give me that.””

Alexander moved it out of reach.

“Why was a prenatal paternity test conducted?””

Victoria stepped forward.

“That's enough.””

Richard raised his cane.

“No. It isn't.””

Alexander read the report again.

The document referenced two potential biological fathers.

One was Alexander Hayes.

The other was Derek Mitchell.

The results were not presented as a definitive conclusion in the document he held. Instead, they showed a preliminary investigation and a recommendation for additional confirmation after birth.

Alexander looked at Brianna.

“You were testing whether I was the father?””

She began sobbing.

“I needed to know.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I thought the timing meant it was yours!””

“Thought?””

Brianna covered her face.

Victoria reached for her daughter.

“Come with me. We're leaving.””

Richard moved his cane across the path.

“No one is leaving until I finish.””

Victoria glared at him.

“You can't hold us here.””

“I am not holding anyone. The doors are open. But before you go, there is something you should understand.””

He nodded toward the assistant.

The young man produced a tablet and connected it to the ballroom's large presentation screen.

A moment later, a series of bank transfers appeared.

Evelyn leaned forward.

She recognized the company name at the top.

Carter Development.

Her grandfather's company.

Richard pointed to the screen.

“For the last eighteen months, someone has been transferring money from a private family account into a consulting business registered under a false address.””

Victoria's expression changed.

Brianna stopped crying.

Alexander looked at the screen.

“What does this have to do with the photographs?””

“Everything,” Richard answered.

He indicated a series of transactions.

The payments had been made in regular intervals.

Ten thousand dollars.

Fifteen thousand.

Twenty thousand.

All sent to the same company.

“Who owns this business?”” Alexander asked.

Richard turned toward Victoria.

“Your turn, Victoria.””

Victoria stared at him.

“I have no idea what you're talking about.””

“Then you won't mind if I explain.””

Richard tapped the screen again.

A corporate registration document appeared.

The company was called Mitchell Consulting Group.

The registered owner was Derek Mitchell.

Brianna covered her mouth.

Alexander looked at his wife.

“You were giving him money?””

“No.””

Richard enlarged the records.

“Three hundred and eighty thousand dollars in eighteen months.””

Brianna shook her head.

“That isn't mine.””

“No,” Richard replied.

“It's from an account that was supposed to support Evelyn's rehabilitation and long-term care.””

Evelyn went completely still.

Her wheelchair suddenly felt unbearably heavy.

“What?””

Richard turned toward her.

“I'm sorry, sweetheart.””

She stared at the screen.

“Grandpa, what does my name have to do with this?””

“The account was established by your father.””

Her lips parted.

“My dad?””

Richard nodded.

“Before the accident, Daniel created a trust for your future. It was designed to support your education, medical care, housing, and independence.””

Evelyn looked at the numbers.

She remembered the year after her accident.

The rehabilitation center had suddenly become too expensive.

Her private physical therapy sessions had been reduced.

Her grandfather had told her there had been administrative problems.

She had believed him.

“Who had access to the account?”” she asked.

Richard took a slow breath.

“Your father's estate administrator.””

Evelyn looked toward Victoria.

Victoria's face had turned pale.

Richard continued.

“Victoria.””

The room erupted in whispers.

Victoria shook her head.

“This is absurd. I was only helping manage the family's affairs.””

“By transferring money to Derek Mitchell?””

“I never authorized those transfers!””

Richard looked toward the assistant.

“Show them the signatures.””

The screen changed.

Several authorization documents appeared.

At the bottom of each one was a signature.

Victoria Hayes.

Evelyn's fingers curled around the armrests.

“Why would you take money that belonged to my father?””

Victoria's face tightened.

“You don't understand the complications involved in managing an estate.””

“Then explain them.””

Victoria looked away.

Brianna suddenly stepped toward the screen.

“Mom, what did you do?””

Victoria turned sharply.

“Don't you start.””

Richard watched them both.

“That's enough. We will let the investigators determine exactly who authorized the transactions.””

Alexander placed the paternity documents back on the table.

He looked exhausted.

“Is there anything else?””

Richard nodded.

“One more thing.””

The assistant handed him a sealed folder.

It was thicker than the previous one.

Richard opened it carefully.

Inside was an official legal document.

Evelyn recognized her father's name.

Daniel Carter.

Richard held the document in both hands.

“Your father left instructions that were to be carried out when you turned twenty-five, or earlier if certain conditions were met.””

Evelyn's eyes widened.

“I'm twenty-four.””

“I know.””

“Why are we discussing this now?””

Richard looked toward the assembled guests.

“Because tonight, those conditions have been met.””

Victoria took a step backward.

“What conditions?””

Richard ignored her.

He looked at Evelyn.

“Your father never intended for you to spend the rest of your life dependent on people who might not have your best interests at heart.””

Evelyn's eyes filled.

“What did he leave me?””

Richard opened the folder.

But before he could read the first page, Victoria suddenly shouted.

“Don't!””

Everyone turned.

For the first time that evening, Victoria looked genuinely frightened.

Not embarrassed.

Not angry.

Frightened.

Richard slowly lowered the document.

“Why, Victoria?””

She stared at the folder.

Then she looked at Evelyn.

“Because if you read that document, you'll discover that your father never trusted me.””

Evelyn's breath caught.

Richard's expression became unreadable.

“Now we're getting somewhere.””

May you like

He turned the page.

And read the first sentence aloud.
