Chapter 7: The Recording That Changed Everything

“Your grandfather's.””

The assistant's words seemed to drain the warmth from the ballroom.

Evelyn looked at Richard.

He stood motionless, one hand gripping his cane, his silver hair catching the golden light from the chandeliers.

“Grandpa?””

Richard didn't respond.

“Why is your voice on Dad's hospital recording?””

Richard swallowed.

“Because I was there.””

“I know you were there. But why didn't you tell me?””

He looked down.

“Because there are things I have regretted every day since your father died.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“Father, we need to hear the recording.””

Richard nodded slowly.

The assistant connected his phone to the ballroom's sound system.

A few seconds of static filled the speakers.

Then a familiar voice emerged.

Daniel Carter.

Evelyn immediately covered her mouth.

“Dad...””

His voice sounded weak and distant, but unmistakably familiar.

“Dad, you have to listen to me.””

Richard's recorded voice answered.

“I'm here, son. Don't waste your strength.””

“Victoria knows about the account.””

“I know.””

“Derek has the original paperwork.””

A pause followed.

Then Daniel continued.

“But he's not the one you need to worry about.””

The recording crackled.

Richard leaned closer to the speaker.

“Who, Daniel?””

Another pause.

Then Daniel whispered something that made Thomas close his eyes.

“Someone you love.””

The recording continued.

“I found the transfers. I found the altered signatures. And I found the documents showing who authorized the final payment.””

Richard's recorded voice became urgent.

“Tell me who did it.””

Daniel coughed.

“Not here. Someone is listening.””

Evelyn began crying silently.

She remembered the hospital room.

She remembered the white flowers.

She remembered being told her father had died before she could say goodbye.

But she had never heard his final words.

Never.

The recording continued.

“Dad, promise me something.””

“Anything.””

“Don't let them take Evelyn's future.””

Richard's voice broke.

“I promise.””

Daniel took a shallow breath.

“And don't let them convince her she's broken.””

Evelyn lowered her head.

A tear fell onto the blue fabric of her dress.

Then came a sound.

A door opening.

Footsteps.

Richard's recorded voice suddenly changed.

“Who are you?””

A second man answered.

“I'm here to check on the patient.””

“Who sent you?””

The recording ended.

The ballroom fell silent.

Evelyn looked at the assistant.

“Was that everything?””

He nodded.

“That's the portion the hospital recovered. There's another file, but it's encrypted.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“Can we identify the second man?””

The assistant shook his head.

“Not from the audio alone.””

Richard stared at the speaker.

“Play the final section again.””

The assistant replayed the last few seconds.

The door.

The footsteps.

The man's voice.

Then a faint metallic sound.

Thomas leaned forward.

“Stop.””

The assistant paused the recording.

“What?””

“Go back two seconds.””

The recording played again.

Thomas listened carefully.

Then he looked at Richard.

“That's a cane.””

Richard frowned.

“What?””

“The sound after the footsteps. Someone was carrying or using a cane.””

Evelyn turned toward her grandfather.

Richard's cane rested beside his right hand.

But Thomas wasn't looking at him.

He was staring at the empty doorway.

“Who else in the family used a cane three years ago?”” Thomas asked.

Richard slowly raised his eyes.

“Nobody.””

Victoria suddenly spoke.

“Stop this.””

Everyone turned.

She had been standing near the entrance, her handbag pressed tightly against her body.

Her face was pale.

“Stop playing that recording.””

Richard stared at her.

“Why?””

“Because you're destroying this family over something you don't understand.””

Thomas laughed bitterly.

“Then help us understand.””

Victoria looked toward Evelyn.

“Your father was very ill. He was confused. He was taking medication. You cannot assume everything he said was accurate.””

Evelyn wiped her cheeks.

“He knew my name.””

Victoria looked away.

“He was your father.””

“He knew he wanted to protect me.””

Victoria's jaw tightened.

“Evelyn, sometimes protecting someone means keeping information from them.””

Evelyn stared at her.

“Is that what you called stealing from me?””

Victoria said nothing.

Richard turned toward his assistant.

“Find out who entered Daniel's hospital room that night. Every visitor. Every staff member. Every access record.””

The assistant nodded.

“I'll contact the hospital.””

Thomas opened his briefcase.

“There may be another way.””

He removed the silver key Daniel had given him.

“Your father's safety deposit box.””

Richard looked at it.

“You think the original evidence is inside?””

“I think he left something there that could identify the person who entered that room.””

Evelyn reached for the key.

“I want to go.””

Richard immediately shook his head.

“It's late. We can arrange everything tomorrow.””

“No.””

She looked directly at him.

“I have spent three years being told that things were too complicated, too difficult, or too painful for me to understand.””

Her voice trembled, but she continued.

“I'm not waiting anymore.””

Richard studied her.

Then he nodded.

“Very well.””

Marcus moved toward her wheelchair.

“I'll drive.””

Thomas checked his watch.

“The bank is closed.””

Evelyn looked at the key.

“Then we'll go first thing in the morning.””

Before anyone could respond, Alexander returned to the ballroom.

His tuxedo jacket was over one arm.

He looked exhausted.

“I'm sorry,” he said quietly.

“I left my phone.””

He approached the table.

Then noticed the recording screen.

“What happened?””

Thomas explained.

Alexander listened without interrupting.

When Thomas finished, Alexander looked toward Evelyn.

“I'm sorry about your father.””

Evelyn nodded.

“Thank you.””

Alexander hesitated.

“There's something I need to tell you.””

Brianna immediately turned.

“Alex, don't.””

He looked at her.

“I received a message from Derek.””

Victoria's face changed.

“What?””

Alexander took out his phone.

“He contacted me twenty minutes ago.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Where is he?””

Alexander showed them the message.

You need to stop asking questions about the baby. Your wife isn't the only person who has something to lose.

Evelyn looked at Brianna.

Brianna began shaking her head.

“I didn't send that.””

Alexander frowned.

“I never said you did.””

He opened the second message.

It contained an attachment.

A photograph.

Brianna standing outside a medical clinic with Derek.

But this time, the photograph showed something different.

Derek was holding a small envelope.

Brianna was handing him a set of keys.

Alexander enlarged the image.

“What are these keys?””

Brianna covered her mouth.

Victoria moved forward.

“Give me that phone.””

Alexander pulled it away.

“No.””

Richard looked at the photograph.

“Where was this taken?””

Alexander checked the message.

“An apartment building in Manhattan.””

Thomas leaned closer.

“That's the building Derek used for his consulting business.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why would Brianna give him keys?””

Brianna's eyes filled.

“Because he said he needed somewhere safe to keep some documents.””

Alexander stared at her.

“What documents?””

She lowered her head.

“I don't know.””

Victoria grabbed her daughter's shoulder.

“Stop talking.””

Brianna pulled away.

“No, Mom. I'm done.””

She looked at Alexander.

“Derek told me he had proof that my mother was involved in the transfers. He said if I helped him, he would keep the information private.””

Thomas shook his head.

“That's blackmail.””

Brianna nodded.

“He said he could ruin my mother's life.””

Victoria's face tightened.

“And you believed him?””

“You told me he could be trusted!””

Richard looked toward the assistant.

“Find Derek.””

The assistant nodded.

“I'll contact the authorities.””

Then Alexander's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A man's voice came through.

“Alexander Hayes?””

“Yes. Who is this?””

“My name is Derek Mitchell.””

Every person in the ballroom froze.

Alexander put the call on speaker.

“Where are you?””

Derek laughed softly.

“That's not important.””

“Why are you threatening me?””

“I'm not threatening you. I'm offering you information.””

“What information?””

“The truth about your wife's baby.””

Brianna began crying.

“Derek, stop.””

Derek ignored her.

“There's something you should know, Alexander. The paternity report Richard showed you tonight is not the only report that exists.””

Alexander's expression hardened.

“What does that mean?””

“It means your wife has been lying to you. But so has her mother.””

Victoria stepped forward.

“Hang up!””

Derek laughed again.

“Hello, Victoria. Still trying to control everyone?””

Victoria's face went white.

Richard grabbed the phone.

“Derek Mitchell, this is Richard Carter. Tell me where you are.””

There was a pause.

Then Derek spoke.

“Mr. Carter, you should be more concerned about the man who visited Daniel in the hospital.””

Richard's grip tightened.

“What do you know?””

Derek's voice dropped.

“I know who was in that room.””

The call began breaking up.

“Who?”” Evelyn shouted.

Derek answered with five words.

“Your son knows exactly who.””

The line went dead.

Richard stood frozen.

Thomas looked at him.

“Father?””

Richard didn't move.

Then the assistant's phone vibrated.

He checked the screen.

His face changed.

“Sir, we've located the hospital's archived visitor records.””

Richard turned.

“What do they say?””

The assistant swallowed.

“The person who entered Daniel's room that night wasn't listed as a visitor.””

“Then who was he?””

The assistant looked at the screen.

“He entered using an employee access card registered to Carter Development.””

Richard's eyes narrowed.

“And whose card?””

The assistant slowly raised his head.

“Thomas Carter.””

Thomas stared at him.

“That is impossible.””

But before anyone could respond, Evelyn noticed something else.

Her uncle's hands were shaking.

May you like

And he was staring at the silver key in her lap.

As if he already knew what her father had hidden.
