Chapter 4: The Secret Behind Her Father's Accident

“Because your father knew what we had done... and he was going to tell you everything.””
Victoria's confession landed harder than the accusations about the stolen money.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Evelyn stared at the woman in the plum-red dress.
“What did you do to my father?””
Victoria immediately shook her head.
“That's not what I meant.””
“Then what did you mean?””
“Evelyn, you were a child when this happened. You don't understand the circumstances.””
“I was twenty-one.””
“You were barely an adult!””
“And you were supposed to be helping me!””
Evelyn's voice rose unexpectedly.
Her hands trembled against the wheelchair armrests.
Marcus moved beside her, but she raised one hand to stop him.
She wanted to hear the answer.
For three years, she had accepted the explanation that her father's accident was a terrible coincidence. A rainy highway. A speeding truck. A driver who had lost control.
She had attended the funeral.
She had watched her grandfather stand beside the coffin.
She had spent countless nights wondering whether her father had suffered.
Now Victoria was suggesting that the accident had a secret.
Richard stepped forward.
“Victoria, I want the truth. All of it.””
Victoria looked toward the ballroom doors.
“Not here.””
Richard tapped his cane against the marble.
“You've had three years to tell me.””
“I didn't have a choice!””
“Everyone has a choice.””
Victoria's eyes filled.
Then she looked toward Brianna.
“Tell him.””
Brianna shook her head.
“Mom, don't involve me.””
Victoria grabbed her daughter's arm.
“You were there too.””
Alexander immediately stepped forward.
“Let go of her.””
Victoria released Brianna.
Alexander looked at his wife.
“What does she mean?””
Brianna stared at the floor.
Richard motioned toward the assistant.
“Clear the immediate area. Nobody leaves with any documents. Our legal team is coming upstairs.””
Several guests began whispering.
One elderly man approached Richard.
“Richard, should we call the police?””
“Yes,” Richard replied.
“And an ambulance if anyone needs medical attention.””
Victoria laughed bitterly.
“You really think you can turn this into a criminal investigation?””
Richard looked at her.
“I think the evidence will speak for itself.””
The ballroom doors closed behind the last departing guest.
Only the family remained.
Evelyn looked at the photograph again.
Her father stood outside a bank, wearing his favorite navy overcoat. Beside him was Derek Mitchell.
Victoria was standing a few feet behind them.
There was no mistaking her face.
“Why was Dad meeting Derek?”” Evelyn asked.
Richard examined the image.
“That's what we're going to find out.””
Victoria folded her arms.
“Daniel was investigating missing money.””
Richard's eyes narrowed.
“What?””
“He discovered that funds were disappearing from the estate accounts. He confronted me about it.””
“You told me you never knew anything about the missing money.””
“I was trying to protect my family.””
Evelyn stared at her.
“By stealing from mine?””
Victoria's face tightened.
“Your father had become obsessed with controlling everything. He thought I was taking advantage of him. He threatened to destroy my daughter's future.””
Brianna suddenly looked up.
“Mom, stop.””
Victoria ignored her.
“Daniel wanted to remove me from the estate administration. He said he had evidence that I had transferred money without authorization.””
Richard's grip tightened around his cane.
“Then why did you tell the police his accident was unrelated to the family?””
“Because it was.””
“You were standing outside the bank with him three days before he died.””
Victoria looked away.
Evelyn felt a chill travel through her body.
“Did Dad know Derek?””
Victoria hesitated.
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Derek had been working with him.””
Alexander looked confused.
“Working with him doing what?””
“Financial consulting.””
Evelyn looked toward the photograph.
“But Derek was Brianna's boyfriend.””
Nobody answered.
Brianna began crying.
“That's not how it started.””
Alexander turned toward her.
“Then tell me how it started.””
Brianna wiped her cheeks.
“Derek was introduced to me through my mother. He was supposed to help with some business arrangements.””
“What business arrangements?””
“I don't know!””
Victoria snapped.
“Brianna!””
Brianna flinched.
“You told me he could help us get access to the family investments!””
Alexander stared at her.
“Us?””
Brianna pressed her lips together.
Richard slowly sat in a nearby chair.
“Now we're getting to the truth.””
Victoria took a breath.
“Daniel wanted to transfer his shares into a protected trust. He was worried that Evelyn would become vulnerable if something happened to him.””
Evelyn's eyes filled again.
“He wanted to protect me?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you try to stop him?””
Victoria looked at Richard.
“Because Daniel wasn't thinking clearly. He wanted to give everything to a girl who might never be able to manage it.””
Richard stood abruptly.
“Choose your next words carefully.””
Victoria raised her chin.
“I'm simply telling the truth.””
“No. You're telling us what you believed would justify taking a dead man's daughter's inheritance.””
Victoria turned away.
Richard continued.
“Daniel trusted you. He asked you to help Evelyn. And you used that trust to redirect money into an account controlled by Derek Mitchell.””
Victoria's expression hardened.
“You don't know what Derek did.””
“Then tell us.””
For the first time, Victoria looked genuinely uncertain.
She glanced at the assistant, then at the tablet in Richard's hand.
“Derek wasn't supposed to keep the money.””
Alexander stared at her.
“Who was supposed to receive it?””
Victoria didn't answer.
Brianna suddenly spoke.
“Mom, you said the money was going into a property investment.””
Victoria spun around.
“Be quiet!””
Brianna recoiled.
Alexander stepped between them.
“Don't speak to her like that.””
Victoria looked at him with contempt.
“You're in no position to judge this family.””
“I'm her husband.””
“And apparently, not the father of her child.””
Alexander's expression went cold.
“Careful.””
Brianna began sobbing.
Richard raised his hand.
“Enough.””
He turned to the assistant.
“Have the investigators contact Derek Mitchell. I want his financial records preserved.””
The assistant nodded.
“There's something else, sir.””
Richard looked at him.
“What?””
“The account photograph came from a recovered security archive. The bank also retained a visitor log.””
He placed a printed document on the table.
Richard studied it.
Then he passed it to Evelyn.
She read the names.
Daniel Carter.
Victoria Hayes.
Derek Mitchell.
And one additional name.
Marcus Reed.
Evelyn looked up.
“Marcus?””
Marcus went completely still.
Richard turned.
“Why is your name on this visitor log?””
Marcus stared at the paper.
“I've never seen that before.””
Victoria gave a small, bitter smile.
“Of course you haven't.””
Evelyn looked between them.
“Marcus, what is she talking about?””
Marcus ran a hand over his face.
“Evelyn, I can explain.””
Richard's expression became severe.
“Then explain now.””
Marcus looked toward the ballroom entrance.
Then back at Evelyn.
“I was twenty-two. Your father asked me to meet him at the bank that afternoon.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because he made me promise not to.””
Evelyn's eyes widened.
“What did he tell you?””
Marcus swallowed.
“He said someone in the family was trying to get control of your inheritance. He wanted me to help him secure the original documents.””
Richard looked startled.
“You knew about the trust?””
“I knew it existed. I didn't know the amount.””
Evelyn's voice dropped.
“And you never told me?””
Marcus looked at her.
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
He glanced toward Victoria.
“Of what might happen if I told the wrong person.””
Victoria stepped forward.
“That's a convenient story.””
Marcus turned toward her.
“You should be the last person speaking about convenient stories.””
Richard held up the visitor log.
“Did Daniel give you anything?””
Marcus hesitated.
Then he nodded.
“A small envelope.””
“Where is it?””
Marcus looked toward Evelyn.
“I still have it.””
Richard's eyes narrowed.
“Three years?””
“I kept it because I thought something was wrong with the accident investigation. I didn't know what to do with it.””
Evelyn felt her heart beating faster.
“What's inside?””
Marcus looked down.
“A letter from your father.””
He reached into his jacket and removed a small folded envelope.
The paper was yellowed around the edges.
Evelyn recognized her father's handwriting immediately.
Her fingers shook as Marcus placed it in her lap.
She opened it carefully.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
Marcus,
If anything happens to me, make sure Evelyn receives the original trust documents. Do not give them to Victoria. I have discovered that someone has been using my name to authorize transfers.
There is something else you need to know.
The person who has been helping Victoria is not the only person involved.
I believe the accident was not an accident.
Evelyn stopped reading.
The ballroom seemed to tilt.
Richard took the paper from her.
He read the final lines.
Then he looked at Marcus.
“Why didn't you give me this?””
Marcus's voice broke.
“Because I thought I was protecting Evelyn.””
Evelyn stared at him.
“You let me believe Dad's death was just bad luck.””
Marcus lowered his head.
“I know.””
Richard looked toward Victoria.
“Who else was involved?””
Victoria's face had become completely white.
She backed away.
Then she whispered four words.
“Ask your own son.””
Richard froze.
Evelyn looked at her grandfather.
“What does she mean?””
Richard's cane slipped slightly in his hand.
His eyes moved toward the photograph of Daniel.
And for the first time in Evelyn's life, she saw fear in the face of the man who had always seemed impossible to frighten.
“Victoria,” Richard said slowly, “are you accusing my son of something?””
Victoria didn't answer.
Instead, she looked toward the ballroom entrance.
A moment later, the doors opened.
A man in a gray overcoat walked inside.
He was carrying a black leather briefcase.
Richard recognized him immediately.
His estranged son.
And Evelyn's uncle.
*Thomas Carter.*
Thomas looked at the photographs, the documents, and the people gathered around the table.

Then he smiled faintly.
“Father,” he said, “I see you've finally opened Daniel's file.””
