Chapter 3: Her Father's Last Instructions

“Upon my death, I direct that my daughter, Evelyn Carter, shall inherit control of the assets listed in Schedule A, subject to the conditions outlined below.””

Richard's voice carried across the ballroom.

Evelyn stared at him.

For several seconds, she couldn't process the words.

Her father.

The man she remembered teaching her to ride a bicycle.

The man who used to leave handwritten notes inside her school lunchbox.

The man whose old leather jacket she still kept folded in her bedroom closet.

He had left something for her.

Something important.

And apparently, someone had spent years trying to keep it from her.

“Grandpa,” she whispered, “what assets?””

Richard looked at her gently.

“Your father owned more than you were told.””

Victoria let out a sharp breath.

“This is ridiculous. Daniel wasn't a wealthy man.””

Richard turned toward her.

“Daniel owned shares in Carter Development before I transferred my controlling interest to the family trust.””

“But those shares were sold.””

“No,” Richard replied.

“They were placed in a separate trust.””

Victoria shook her head.

“That makes no sense.””

Richard handed the document to Evelyn.

“Read the next section.””

Her hands trembled as she took the pages.

Marcus moved closer and helped position the folder on her lap.

Evelyn looked down.

The legal language blurred.

She found a familiar name.

Daniel Carter.

Then another.

Evelyn Carter.

And beneath them, a figure that made her stop breathing.

Thirty-two percent.

She looked up.

“Grandpa?””

Richard nodded.

“Your father held thirty-two percent of the company's voting shares. Those shares were transferred into your inheritance trust.””

Alexander stepped closer.

“Thirty-two percent?””

Richard nodded.

“That is correct.””

Brianna stared at Evelyn as though she had never seen her before.

“But that can't be right.””

Evelyn barely heard her.

“Does that mean...?””

“It means,” Richard said, “that you are one of the largest individual shareholders in Carter Development.””

The room exploded with conversation.

A woman near the front covered her mouth.

Two men in business suits exchanged startled looks.

Marcus stared at Evelyn.

“Are you serious?””

Richard nodded.

“Completely.””

Brianna suddenly laughed.

It was a nervous, desperate sound.

“That's impossible. Evelyn doesn't even work.””

Richard turned toward her.

“Ownership is not determined by whether someone can walk into an office.””

Brianna's cheeks flushed.

“I didn't mean—”

“Yes, you did.””

He tapped his cane against the floor.

“And I heard exactly what you said earlier.””

Evelyn lowered her eyes to the document.

She felt as if she were reading about another person.

Thirty-two percent.

Her father had left her a future.

A future she hadn't known existed.

But the document contained more.

A section titled Conditions of Transfer.

She read it slowly.

Then stopped.

“Grandpa, what does this mean?””

Richard moved beside her.

“Which part?””

She pointed to the paragraph.

It stated that her father's shares could not be transferred, sold, or placed under another person's control without her explicit written consent.

There was another clause.

The trustee was required to preserve the assets for Evelyn's direct benefit.

If anyone attempted to divert funds or conceal ownership information, an independent review could be triggered.

Evelyn looked up.

“Was someone supposed to tell me about this?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Richard's expression darkened.

“The estate administrator.””

Evelyn looked toward Victoria.

Victoria's mouth opened.

Then closed.

Richard continued.

“Daniel appointed Victoria to handle certain administrative responsibilities after his death because he believed she was familiar with the family business.””

Victoria shook her head.

“He asked me to help. I never agreed to become responsible for everything.””

“You accepted the position,” Richard replied.

“You signed the paperwork.””

Evelyn looked at the signature pages.

The same signature appeared on several documents.

Victoria Hayes.

“Why didn't you tell me?”” Evelyn asked.

Victoria stepped forward.

“Because you were recovering. You were young. You were going through something terrible, and I didn't think it was appropriate to burden you with complicated financial matters.””

Evelyn stared at her.

“You told me my physical therapy wasn't affordable.””

Victoria's eyes darted toward Richard.

“That was a different situation.””

“You told me I had to leave the private rehabilitation facility because the family couldn't keep paying.””

“Evelyn, you need to understand—”

“You told me my father had left almost nothing.””

Victoria raised her voice.

“I was trying to protect you!””

Evelyn's voice became steadier.

“From what?””

Victoria said nothing.

Marcus moved behind Evelyn's chair.

“Answer her.””

Victoria glared at him.

“This is none of your business.””

Marcus folded his arms.

“It became my business when you started taking money from her.””

Richard raised a hand.

“Let her finish.””

Evelyn looked down at the papers again.

Then she noticed a small handwritten note attached to the final page.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Her father's.

She recognized the way he formed the letter E, with the middle line slightly longer than the others.

Her breath caught.

“Grandpa...””

Richard bent down.

“What is it?””

She carefully removed the note.

It was short.

Only a few lines.

My darling Evelyn,

If you are reading this, I hope you have learned that being unable to walk does not mean being unable to move forward. Never allow anyone to confuse your circumstances with your worth.

The world may underestimate you. Do not help it.

Love, Dad.

Evelyn pressed the note against her chest.

For the first time that evening, she cried.

Not because Brianna had insulted her.

Not because Victoria had lied.

But because her father had somehow managed to reach her across the years.

Richard placed a hand on her shoulder.

“He knew you would be strong.””

She shook her head.

“I don't feel strong.””

“You don't have to feel strong every day.””

He paused.

“You only have to stop believing the people who tell you that you're weak.””

Across the room, Brianna was watching her.

Her expression had changed.

The contempt was gone.

So was the confidence.

She looked at the documents in Evelyn's lap, then at the diamond bracelet around her own wrist.

“Grandpa,” Brianna said carefully, “surely this doesn't mean Evelyn gets to control the company.””

Richard turned.

“Why wouldn't it?””

“Because she's never been involved in business.””

“Neither were you.””

Brianna looked offended.

“That's different.””

“How?””

“I've been part of this family for years.””

Richard's expression hardened.

“Evelyn has been part of this family since the day she was born.””

Victoria moved toward Brianna.

“Don't argue with him.””

But Brianna wasn't listening.

She stepped closer to Evelyn.

“Look, I know tonight got out of hand.””

Evelyn looked up.

Brianna forced a smile.

“We're family. We shouldn't let paperwork ruin that.””

Evelyn studied her.

“You called me useless less than an hour ago.””

“I was upset.””

“You said the family wasted money on me.””

“I didn't mean it like that.””

“You knew I was struggling to pay for therapy.””

Brianna looked away.

Evelyn continued.

“And you laughed.””

Brianna's smile disappeared.

“I said I was sorry.””

“No, you didn't.””

The silence that followed was different from the earlier silence.

This time, nobody was waiting for Evelyn to apologize.

Nobody was expecting her to make the situation comfortable for everyone else.

Alexander stepped away from Brianna.

“I think you should stop talking.””

Brianna turned toward him.

“Alex, please. We need to discuss our marriage.””

He looked at the documents.

Then at the photographs.

“I'm not discussing anything until I know the truth.””

Richard nodded toward the assistant.

“Give Alexander the remaining pages.””

The assistant handed him another folder.

Alexander opened it.

Inside were additional photographs, copies of bank transfers, and an investigative report.

He read the first page.

His expression changed.

“What is this?””

Richard looked toward Victoria.

“Something your wife and her mother should have explained a long time ago.””

Alexander turned another page.

Then another.

He stopped at a photograph.

A man stood beside Brianna outside a private medical clinic.

The date was printed underneath.

Six weeks before Brianna's wedding.

Alexander stared at the image.

“Why were you at a medical clinic with Derek before we got married?””

Brianna's lips parted.

Victoria stepped forward.

“That's enough. You are not going to interrogate my daughter in front of strangers.””

Richard's voice cut through the ballroom.

“Then explain why Derek Mitchell received payments from Evelyn's trust.””

Victoria went pale.

Alexander looked toward her.

“What does Derek have to do with your family?””

Victoria didn't answer.

Richard tapped the report.

“Derek wasn't simply Brianna's former boyfriend.””

Brianna began shaking her head.

“Grandpa, don't.””

Richard looked directly at Alexander.

“He was also the person who helped Victoria move the money.””

Alexander stared at his wife.

“Did you know?””

Brianna looked toward her mother.

That tiny movement answered more than words could.

Alexander slowly placed the folder on the table.

“You knew.””

Brianna began crying again.

“Alex, please. I can explain.””

“Did you know your mother was taking money from Evelyn?””

“I didn't know everything!””

“That's not what I asked.””

Victoria suddenly grabbed Brianna's wrist.

“Stop talking.””

But Alexander had already seen the panic in both women's faces.

He looked toward Richard.

“Why wasn't this reported earlier?””

Richard took a deep breath.

“Because I wanted to be certain. The original records had been altered, and someone had been using my authority to approve transfers without my knowledge.””

He glanced toward the assistant.

“Fortunately, we recovered the original banking records.””

Evelyn looked up.

“Grandpa, does this mean they stole from Dad's trust?””

Richard didn't answer immediately.

Then he nodded.

“Yes, sweetheart.””

“How much?””

“More than three hundred and eighty thousand dollars has been identified so far.””

Evelyn's face tightened.

Three hundred and eighty thousand dollars.

That was money her father had intended to protect her with.

Money that could have paid for specialized equipment, independent living arrangements, and years of rehabilitation.

She looked toward Victoria.

“Did you know I was struggling?””

Victoria swallowed.

“I didn't want things to become complicated.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“You watched me sell my father's old watch to pay for therapy.””

Victoria's eyes widened.

“That was your decision.””

“No,” Evelyn replied.

“It was the only decision I thought I had.””

Marcus looked down.

Richard closed his eyes briefly.

Then he turned to his assistant.

“Call the company's legal department. Tell them to preserve every account, every email, and every transaction connected to this trust.””

The assistant nodded.

“Immediately, sir.””

Richard faced Victoria.

“And until the independent audit is completed, you are no longer authorized to access any Carter family account.””

Victoria's voice rose.

“You cannot do that!””

Richard's reply was quiet.

“Watch me.””

Brianna suddenly turned toward Evelyn.

“You have to do something!””

Evelyn blinked.

“What?””

“Tell him to stop. You're the one he listens to. Tell him this has gone too far.””

Evelyn looked at her for several seconds.

Then she glanced at the gold gown, the expensive jewelry, and the hands that had pointed at her wheelchair earlier.

For years, she had imagined what it would feel like if Brianna ever needed something from her.

She had imagined anger.

Revenge.

A perfect speech.

But now that the moment had arrived, she felt something entirely different.

She felt tired.

“I don't want to hurt you,” Evelyn said.

Brianna's expression softened with relief.

“Then help me.””

Evelyn continued.

“But I'm not going to protect you from the consequences of what you did.””

Brianna's face fell.

Alexander stepped away from her completely.

Richard placed the inheritance document back in Evelyn's hands.

“There's one more provision your father included.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“What provision?””

Richard pointed toward the final page.

It concerned the appointment of the company's next executive chairperson.

Evelyn read the paragraph.

Her eyebrows drew together.

“Grandpa, this says I have the right to nominate someone to lead the company.””

Richard nodded.

“And it says something else.””

He turned toward the guests.

“Daniel did not want his daughter to inherit shares and become a silent investor. He wanted her to have the opportunity to build something of her own.””

Evelyn looked at her father's signature.

Then at Richard.

“Do you think I could actually do that?””

Richard smiled faintly.

“I think your father believed you could.””

He paused.

“And I agree with him.””

Before Evelyn could respond, the assistant approached Richard with a small tablet.

“Sir, there's an urgent development.””

Richard looked at him.

“What is it?””

“The preliminary audit has uncovered another account. It wasn't listed in the original investigation.””

Richard's expression tightened.

“Whose account?””

The assistant glanced toward Evelyn.

“It's registered under Daniel Carter's name.””

Evelyn leaned forward.

“My father?””

The assistant nodded.

“And the last transaction was made three days before his accident.””

Richard took the tablet.

He read the screen.

Then his face went completely still.

“That's impossible.””

“What is it?”” Marcus asked.

Richard slowly turned the tablet toward Evelyn.

There was a photograph attached to the account.

A photograph of Daniel Carter.

Standing outside a bank.

Beside a man Evelyn recognized immediately.

Derek Mitchell.

But there was something else.

A second person stood behind them.

A woman wearing a plum-red coat.

Evelyn looked at Victoria.

The older woman's hand flew to her necklace.

And for the first time that night, Richard Carter seemed genuinely afraid.

“Victoria,” he whispered.

She took one step backward.

Richard raised his eyes.

“Why were you with Daniel three days before the accident?””

Victoria's lips trembled.

May you like

Then she looked at Evelyn and said something nobody in the ballroom was prepared to hear.

“Because your father knew what we had done... and he was going to tell you everything.””
