Chapter 9: The Truth Behind the Funeral
The room fell silent.
Marcus looked at Daniel.
"Read that again.""
Daniel lowered his eyes to the letter.
"Richard Cole was never the person who arranged James Bennett's disappearance. That decision was made by Evelyn Bennett herself.""
James stepped forward.
"That's impossible.""
Daniel continued reading.
I know what you have been told. I know what Richard did, and I know what James believes. But neither of them knows the entire truth.
Marcus felt his stomach tighten.
Daniel turned the page.
James wanted to return home. I refused to let him. Not because I stopped loving him, but because I discovered what he had done before Vanessa was born.
James looked away.
Marcus turned toward his father.
"What did you do?""
James rubbed his forehead.
"I made mistakes.""
"That's not an answer.""
"I was trying to protect Patricia and Vanessa.""
"From what?""
James took a breath.
"From the truth about the original partnership.""
Marcus looked at the document.
"Tell me.""
James sat down.
"When Richard and I first invested together, we created a company that held several properties. Your grandfather contributed the capital. Richard handled the development. I managed the legal and financial structure.""
"And Mom?""
"Your mother was the accountant.""
Daniel looked up.
"Your mother was involved in the company?""
James nodded.
"She discovered that Richard was moving funds out of the partnership. I confronted him. He claimed the money was being used to cover operating expenses.""
Marcus frowned.
"Was it?""
"No. He had been transferring it into private accounts.""
Olivia stepped closer.
"Why didn't Mom report him?""
"She did. But before the investigation could be completed, Richard produced documents suggesting that I had authorized the transfers.""
Marcus looked at his father.
"Were you responsible?""
James lowered his head.
"Some of them.""
The admission landed heavily.
"What?""
James looked at him.
"I signed certain transfers. Richard told me the money was being moved temporarily to protect the business from creditors. I believed him.""
Daniel interrupted.
"Did you know the transfers were fraudulent?""
"No.""
"Did you benefit personally?""
James hesitated.
"Yes.""
Marcus stood.
"So you were involved.""
"I was manipulated.""
"That's what everyone says!""
James's face tightened.
"I was young, Marcus. I trusted the wrong man.""
Marcus shook his head.
"And Mom had to clean up your mess.""
James looked down.
"Yes.""
Daniel continued reading.
When Evelyn discovered the truth, she confronted James. He agreed to cooperate, but Richard threatened to expose him as the person responsible for the missing funds.
I realized that if James returned home, he could be arrested, and our children would become part of a public scandal.
I made the decision to hide him.
Marcus looked at his father.
"Mom arranged your disappearance?""
James nodded slowly.
"She believed it was the only way.""
"Then why did you let us think you were dead?""
James looked at him.
"Because I was ashamed.""
That answer was quieter than Marcus expected.
James continued.
"Your mother gave me a choice. I could return and face the consequences, or disappear while she protected the family. I chose to disappear.""
Marcus stared.
"You chose to leave us.""
James nodded.
"Yes.""
For a moment, Marcus couldn't speak.
Then he looked at Daniel.
"Does the letter say anything else?""
Daniel continued.
I made that decision because I wanted my children to grow up without the burden of their father's mistakes. But I also made another decision that I now regret.
I kept Vanessa's identity secret.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Daniel read on.
Patricia begged me to protect her daughter from Richard. I agreed. Vanessa deserved to grow up believing she was loved, not believing she was a bargaining chip in a business dispute.
Vanessa lowered herself into a chair.
"She knew me?""
Olivia approached her.
"Mom met you when you were little.""
Vanessa looked up.
"How little?""
"Four or five. She used to bring you birthday presents through Patricia.""
Vanessa began crying.
"I remember a woman who used to send me books.""
Olivia nodded.
"That was her.""
Vanessa covered her face.
Marcus looked at the letter.
His mother had been carrying the truth for decades.
And every person in the room had been affected by her decisions.
Daniel reached the final paragraph.
There is one more thing my children must understand.
The original agreement contains evidence of an attempted theft that happened after James disappeared. The person responsible was not Richard, and it was not Tyler.
It was someone who had access to our family home, our financial records, and my private correspondence.
Marcus frowned.
"Who?""
Daniel read the final sentence.
The person was someone I trusted enough to give a key.
James slowly stood.
His face had become pale.
"That doesn't make sense.""
Marcus looked at him.
"Who had a key?""
James didn't answer.
Olivia looked between them.
Then she whispered:
"Uncle Robert.""
Marcus froze.
Robert Bennett was their father's younger brother.
He had attended the funeral.
He had helped Evelyn manage the family home.
He had been present at every major family event.
And he had been the person who encouraged Marcus to start his real estate business.
Marcus shook his head.
"Uncle Robert?""
James closed his eyes.
"He's been involved longer than you know.""
At the same time, Robert Bennett was sitting in a private office downtown.
He was seventy-one years old, impeccably dressed, and known throughout Atlanta's business community as a generous philanthropist.
A framed photograph of him with Marcus hung behind his desk.
He looked at it now.
Then he turned toward the man standing by the window.
Richard Cole.
Older, thinner, and visibly tired.
But alive.
Robert poured two glasses of whiskey.
"I told you this would happen.""
Richard took the glass.
"You said James would never return.""
"I said he wouldn't return unless the agreement was found.""
"And now?""
Robert looked at his computer.
A security alert showed that the original document had been recovered.
"Now we have a problem.""
Richard took a drink.
"Then solve it.""
Robert smiled faintly.
"After twenty-seven years, you still think I work for you.""
Richard's expression changed.
"What are you talking about?""
Robert placed his glass down.
"I've been managing the Bennett estate since Evelyn died. I've kept the business profitable. I've protected Marcus. I've made sure Olivia had everything she needed.""
"You also stole money.""
Robert shrugged.
"Business expenses.""
Richard stared.
"You were supposed to help me recover the original shares.""
"And I did. Until you decided to involve your daughter.""
Richard stepped closer.
"Vanessa was part of the plan.""
Robert shook his head.
"Vanessa was a distraction. Marcus was the real target.""
Richard frowned.
"What?""
Robert opened a drawer.
Inside were several documents bearing Marcus's signature.
Some were genuine.
Others were not.
Robert smiled.
"Do you know what happens when the owner of a major property portfolio appears to have authorized a series of fraudulent transfers?""
Richard stared at the papers.
"You're going to frame him.""
Robert took another drink.
"I already have.""
At Daniel's office, Marcus was examining the original agreement when his phone rang.
It was his bank.
He answered.
"Marcus Bennett.""
A woman's voice spoke.
"Mr. Bennett, this is Angela from corporate security. We need to verify several transactions associated with your business accounts.""
Marcus frowned.
"What transactions?""
"There have been multiple authorization requests submitted today.""
"By whom?""
"According to the documents, by you.""
Marcus looked at Daniel.
"What amounts?""
The woman listed three transfers.
The total exceeded six million dollars.
Marcus felt his stomach tighten.
"I did not authorize those transactions.""
"Understood. We're placing a temporary hold pending verification.""
Daniel immediately opened his laptop.
"Send me the transaction references.""
Marcus repeated the details.
Daniel began typing.
Then he stopped.
"Marcus.""
"What?""
"These requests were submitted through your company's internal authorization system.""
"That's impossible.""
Daniel turned the screen.
A login record showed that the requests had been made using Marcus's executive credentials.
But the access location was not his office.
It was the headquarters of Bennett Holdings.
Marcus stared.
"Who has access to that system?""
Daniel checked.
"Three people.""
Marcus waited.
"Yourself, your chief financial officer, and Robert Bennett.""
Marcus felt cold.
"Uncle Robert.""
Daniel nodded.
Then his phone rang.
He answered and listened.
His expression changed.
"What?""
He ended the call.
Marcus stood.
"What happened?""
"Police are at your office.""
"Why?""
Daniel looked at him.
"Someone reported that you attempted to transfer company funds into an unauthorized account.""
Marcus shook his head.
"That's a lie.""
"I know.""
Then Daniel handed him another document.
It was a warrant application.
The evidence listed included the forged transfer forms, the attempted property restructuring, and a series of financial records supposedly signed by Marcus.
The final page contained a statement from a witness.
Marcus read the name.
His blood ran cold.
*Vanessa Cole.*
Vanessa was sitting in a police interview room.
A detective placed a glass of water in front of her.
"Ms. Cole, you understand why we need to speak with you?""
She nodded.
"I do.""
"You're connected to several companies involved in the attempted transfer of Mr. Bennett's assets.""
"I know.""
"Did you participate?""
Vanessa looked down.
"Yes.""
The detective leaned forward.
"Did Marcus Bennett know about these transactions?""
"No.""
"Did he authorize them?""
"No.""
"Then why are you here?""
Vanessa lifted her eyes.
"Because I can prove who did.""
She removed her phone and placed it on the table.
The detective examined it.
There were recordings of Tyler.
Messages from Patricia.
And several conversations with Robert Bennett.
The detective looked up.
"Why didn't you bring this information forward earlier?""
Vanessa swallowed.
"Because I was part of the plan.""
The detective waited.
Vanessa continued.
"I thought I could get money out of Marcus. I thought I could manipulate him into giving me access to his assets. I was wrong.""
"Why are you cooperating now?""
Vanessa's eyes filled.
"Because someone else is trying to destroy him for something I helped create.""
The detective leaned back.
"Who?""
Vanessa took a breath.
"Robert Bennett.""
At 11:45 p.m., Marcus stood outside his office building.
Police officers were moving through the lobby.
Employees were leaving in small groups.
His reputation, the company he had spent twelve years building, and the family trust were all being pulled into the same scandal.
Daniel stood beside him.
"We can challenge the allegations.""
Marcus looked at the building.
"Can we prove Robert did it?""
"Not yet.""
His phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A familiar voice spoke.
"Marcus.""
His uncle.
Robert.
Marcus closed his eyes.
"What do you want?""
Robert laughed softly.
"To save you from making a terrible mistake.""
"You forged my signature.""
"I protected the company.""
"You stole from me.""
"I kept your business alive.""
Marcus's jaw tightened.
"Where are you?""
Robert ignored the question.
"You have no idea what your mother left behind.""
"I have the agreement.""
Robert went silent.
Then his voice changed.
"Do you?""
Marcus looked at Daniel.
Robert continued.
"Because the document you found isn't the only original.""
Marcus felt a chill.
"What are you talking about?""
"Your mother made two agreements. One for the family trust. One for the original partnership.""
"Where is the second?""
Robert laughed.
"With me.""
The call ended.
Marcus stared at his phone.
Then a message appeared.
It contained a photograph of a safe.
Inside the open door was a thick legal folder.
And beside it was a handwritten note.
*COME ALONE, OR YOUR FATHER WILL PAY FOR WHAT HE DID.*
Marcus looked toward James.
His father was standing beside Olivia.
For the first time since returning, he looked truly afraid.
James whispered:
"Don't go, Marcus.""
Marcus looked at him.
"Why?""
James swallowed.
"Because I know what's inside that safe.""
May you like
He paused.
"And if Robert has it, then he knows who really killed your mother.""
