Chapter 9: The Bride Was Part of the Family All Along

Marcus stared at the document.

He read the handwritten sentence again.

The child named in this agreement must be reunited with her biological family.

His father stood beside him, unable to meet his eyes.

"Tell me it's not true," Marcus said.

James remained silent.

"Tell me Vanessa isn't your daughter.""

James closed his eyes.

"She is.""

The words landed harder than any accusation Marcus had heard that day.

He stepped backward.

"How?""

James sat down on an old wooden chair.

"Before I met your mother, I was involved with Patricia Cole. We were young. I thought we would get married.""

Marcus looked at him.

"Patricia?""

James nodded.

"Richard found out. He was furious. He believed I had dishonored his family.""

"And Vanessa?""

"She was born shortly afterward.""

Marcus stared at the agreement.

"You're telling me the woman I almost married is my half-sister?""

James looked up.

"No. Listen to me. You're not related by blood.""

Marcus's expression hardened.

"Explain.""

"Vanessa is my biological daughter. But your mother and I had been separated when she was conceived. When Patricia realized Richard intended to use the child in his business dispute, she came to Evelyn.""

James paused.

"Your mother agreed to protect Vanessa.""

Marcus looked at the photograph.

"So Mom knew?""

"Yes.""

"All these years?""

"Yes.""

"Did she tell you?""

James nodded.

"She wanted Vanessa to grow up without being used as a bargaining chip. She also wanted to protect you and Olivia from Richard.""

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

"Why didn't you tell Vanessa?""

"Because Patricia agreed to keep her away from the financial dispute. But when Richard disappeared, everything became complicated.""

Daniel interrupted.

"Mr. Bennett, this document appears to establish a separate beneficiary interest for Vanessa. We need to determine whether the provision remains legally enforceable.""

James nodded.

"That's why Richard wanted it.""

Marcus looked at him.

"Then why did you tell me not to trust Olivia?""

James lowered his eyes.

"Because I believed she had been helping Walter Hayes.""

"She was meeting him because Mom asked her to.""

Marcus turned.

Olivia's absence suddenly felt unbearable.

"How do you know?""

James reached into his pocket and pulled out a small envelope.

"Your mother left instructions for Olivia. She was supposed to meet Walter when she turned twenty-eight.""

Marcus stared.

"Why?""

"To learn the truth about Vanessa.""

Daniel examined the envelope.

It contained a letter in Evelyn's handwriting.

Marcus opened it.

My dearest Olivia,

If you are reading this, the time has come to protect your brother from a truth he was never meant to carry alone.

Vanessa is James's daughter. Patricia knows. Richard knows. Walter knows.

But the most important thing is this: Vanessa was never supposed to inherit the family estate. She was supposed to inherit the original partnership shares, which were placed in trust for her protection.

Richard has spent years trying to turn that protection into a weapon.

Do not allow him to succeed.

Marcus lowered the letter.

"So Olivia knew.""

James nodded.

"She knew some of it.""

Marcus looked at the final paragraph.

His mother's handwriting became shaky.

If Marcus ever falls in love with Vanessa, tell him the truth before the wedding. I cannot bear the thought of him learning this from someone who wants to destroy him.

Marcus closed his eyes.

He remembered Olivia asking whether he was certain about the marriage.

He remembered her hesitation whenever Vanessa discussed the family trust.

He remembered the way Olivia had looked at him at the altar.

She had known.

And she had been trying to protect him.

At the old warehouse, Olivia was sitting across from Walter Hayes.

Her hands were no longer tied.

Tyler had left the room after receiving a call.

Walter stood beside a metal cabinet.

He was older, with silver hair and a walking stick, but his eyes were sharp.

"Your brother found the agreement," he said.

Olivia nodded.

"I know.""

"Then everything changes.""

She looked at him.

"Why did you let me believe Dad was dead?""

Walter lowered his head.

"Because your mother asked me to.""

"That's not good enough.""

"No," he agreed.

"It isn't.""

Olivia stood.

"Marcus thinks I'm involved in all of this.""

"He'll understand.""

"Will he?""

Walter placed a hand on the cabinet.

"Your mother trusted you with something she couldn't trust anyone else with.""

Olivia frowned.

"What?""

Walter opened the cabinet.

Inside were several old documents.

He removed a sealed envelope.

"Your mother left this for Vanessa.""

Olivia stared.

"Why?""

"Because Vanessa deserves to know the truth before Richard uses it against her.""

Olivia took the envelope.

Then she heard footsteps.

Tyler entered.

His expression was different now.

He wasn't smiling.

"Give me that.""

Walter stepped between them.

"Tyler, it's over.""

Tyler pulled a phone from his pocket.

"Not yet.""

He turned toward Olivia.

"Your brother has the agreement. But he doesn't have the original signature page.""

Olivia frowned.

"What?""

Tyler smiled.

"The page that proves Vanessa's identity. Without it, the rest is just an old family document.""

Walter's face tightened.

Tyler continued.

"And I know exactly where it is.""

He pointed toward the envelope.

"Give it to me.""

Olivia held it tighter.

"No.""

Tyler stepped closer.

"Don't make this difficult.""

Walter raised his walking stick.

"Leave her alone.""

Tyler shoved him.

Walter stumbled against the cabinet.

Olivia screamed.

Then the warehouse door opened.

Vanessa stood in the entrance.

"Tyler!""

He turned.

She looked at the scene in front of her.

Walter was on the floor.

Olivia was holding an envelope.

And Tyler was standing over them.

Vanessa stepped inside.

"What are you doing?""

Tyler straightened.

"You're not supposed to be here.""

"Neither are you.""

He stared at her.

Vanessa looked at Olivia.

"Are you okay?""

Olivia nodded cautiously.

Tyler laughed.

"How touching. The family reunion.""

Vanessa turned toward him.

"Tell me the truth.""

"What truth?""

"Am I James Bennett's daughter?""

Tyler's smile disappeared.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then he said:

"Yes.""

Vanessa felt her knees weaken.

"Why didn't anyone tell me?""

Tyler shrugged.

"Because it was convenient to keep you ignorant.""

She stared at him.

"And you knew?""

"Of course.""

"All this time?""

"Yes.""

Vanessa looked at Olivia.

"Did you know?""

Olivia nodded.

"Mom told me before she died.""

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I was trying to find a safe way to do it.""

Vanessa laughed through her tears.

"Everyone was trying to protect me. Nobody thought I deserved the truth.""

Tyler stepped toward her.

"Vanessa, don't listen to them. We can still get what we came for.""

She looked at him.

"What did we come for?""

"The money.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"You told me Marcus was just a rich man who could give me everything.""

"He can.""

"You told me my father wanted this.""

"He did.""

"Then why are you holding my sister's hostage?""

Tyler's expression hardened.

"Because people keep getting in the way.""

Vanessa looked at Olivia.

Then at Walter.

She slowly removed a small object from her purse.

A voice recorder.

Tyler noticed.

"What is that?""

Vanessa stepped backward.

"I recorded everything.""

Tyler lunged.

But Olivia pushed the metal cabinet between them.

Walter grabbed his walking stick.

The warehouse door swung open again.

Marcus entered with Daniel and two police officers.

"Step away from them!""

Tyler froze.

For a moment, his eyes moved around the room, searching for an escape.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

"You set me up?""

She shook her head.

"No. You did this to yourself.""

The officers moved toward him.

Tyler tried to run.

One officer caught his arm, while the other forced him against the wall.

The recorder slipped from Vanessa's hand.

Marcus rushed to Olivia.

"Are you hurt?""

She shook her head.

He pulled her into a hug.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Marcus looked at Vanessa.

She stood near the doorway, crying silently.

He walked toward her.

"Are you okay?""

Vanessa nodded.

Then she looked at him.

"Marcus, I need to tell you something.""

He waited.

"I knew your father was involved with my family. I didn't know he was my father. I swear.""

Marcus studied her face.

"Did you know about the financial plan?""

She lowered her eyes.

"Yes.""

"Did you intend to marry me for my money?""

Vanessa began crying harder.

"At first, I thought I could get everything I wanted. Tyler convinced me that Marcus Bennett was just another rich man who could be manipulated.""

Marcus said nothing.

She continued.

"But somewhere along the way, I started believing I loved you.""

Marcus looked at her.

"You can't build love on a lie.""

"I know.""

"You stood outside that dressing room and laughed about destroying my life.""

Vanessa covered her mouth.

"I know.""

"And when I gave you a chance to be honest, you tried to make me feel guilty.""

She nodded.

"I know.""

Marcus stepped back.

"I'm sorry, Vanessa. But whatever happened between us is over.""

She didn't argue.

For the first time, she appeared to understand that there was nothing left to negotiate.

Daniel examined the documents recovered from the warehouse.

The original agreement was authentic.

So was the missing signature page.

But something else caught his attention.

The document listed a trust beneficiary who had never been mentioned in the earlier records.

He looked at James.

"Mr. Bennett, did you know about this?""

James approached.

"What?""

Daniel pointed to the name.

*Evelyn Bennett — Personal Beneficiary.*

James frowned.

"That can't be right.""

Daniel turned the page.

"It appears your wife retained a separate interest in the original partnership.""

Marcus looked at him.

"Mom?""

Daniel nodded.

"And according to this clause, her interest passed to her heirs upon her death.""

Marcus stared.

"So Olivia and I inherited it?""

Daniel slowly shook his head.

"Not exactly.""

He pointed to a handwritten amendment.

It was signed by Evelyn shortly before her death.

The amendment stated that the original partnership shares would remain frozen until a specific condition was met.

Marcus read the condition.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

The clause required the three children connected to the original agreement to sign a joint declaration acknowledging the truth of their parentage and releasing any fraudulent claims against the estate.

James looked confused.

"Three children?""

Daniel nodded.

"Marcus, Olivia, and Vanessa.""

Vanessa stared.

"Why would I have to sign?""

Daniel turned the page.

"Because your mother left you something.""

He placed a final document on the table.

It was a letter addressed to Vanessa.

On the front, Evelyn had written:

To the daughter I never gave birth to, but loved as my own.

Vanessa began to cry.

Marcus looked at his father.

James closed his eyes.

And Daniel quietly opened the letter.

But the first sentence was enough to make everyone stop breathing.

Vanessa, if you are reading this, then the man who has been lying to you about your inheritance has finally been exposed.

Daniel looked up.

"There's another name in this letter.""

Marcus frowned.

"Whose?""

Daniel turned the page.

And read it aloud.

"Richard Cole was never the person who arranged James Bennett's disappearance.""

May you like

He paused.

"That decision was made by Evelyn Bennett herself.""
