Chapter 8: The Sister Who Had Been Hiding the Truth
Marcus ran through the house shouting Olivia's name.
"Olivia!""
He checked the kitchen.
The hallway.
The back porch.
Nothing.
Samuel was already outside, moving toward the driveway.
Daniel called emergency services while James searched the adjoining rooms.
Elias sat in his chair, pale and trembling.
Marcus returned to the living room.
"How did they get inside?""
Elias shook his head.
"I don't know.""
Marcus picked up the note.
His hands were shaking.
*BRING THE ORIGINAL AGREEMENT IF YOU WANT YOUR SISTER BACK.*
He looked at James.
"What agreement?""
James didn't answer immediately.
Marcus grabbed his father's jacket.
"What agreement?""
James looked into his son's eyes.
"The document your mother hid.""
"Where is it?""
"I don't know.""
Marcus released him.
"You have got to be kidding me.""
"Your mother never told me where she placed the original.""
"Then how are we supposed to get Olivia back?""
James looked toward the notebook.
"There's a clue in Evelyn's handwriting.""
Daniel opened the notebook again.
They searched the pages.
The references to the agreement appeared repeatedly, but none contained an address.
Then Daniel noticed something.
A sentence written near the back.
The truth rests where the first promise was made.
Marcus frowned.
"Where did Mom and Dad first meet?""
James answered quietly.
"At the old Bennett house.""
"The house we sold?""
James nodded.
"Before we sold it, your mother hid something in the foundation.""
Marcus looked at him.
"What?""
"The original agreement.""
At 11:20 p.m., Marcus received a video call.
The screen showed Olivia sitting in a chair inside a dark room.
Her hands were tied.
Her hair was disheveled, but she appeared unharmed.
Marcus immediately answered.
"Olivia!""
She looked toward the camera.
"Marcus, don't come here.""
A man's voice spoke from somewhere behind her.
"That's not your decision.""
Tyler stepped into view.
He wore a black jacket and held a phone.
Marcus's expression hardened.
"Let her go.""
Tyler smiled.
"Always straight to business. I can see why people like working with you.""
"Tell me what you want.""
"The original agreement.""
"I don't have it.""
"Your father does.""
Marcus looked toward James.
Tyler noticed.
"Ah. So the family reunion was successful.""
James stepped toward the screen.
"Tyler, this is between you and me.""
Tyler laughed.
"It stopped being between us when your family started interfering.""
Marcus moved closer to the phone.
"You have Olivia. Leave everyone else out of this.""
Tyler leaned toward the camera.
"Bring the original agreement to the old Bennett property by midnight tomorrow. No police. No lawyers. No surprises.""
Marcus stared at him.
"And if I don't?""
Tyler turned the camera toward Olivia.
He placed a folded photograph on her lap.
It showed Evelyn Bennett.
Olivia looked at it.
Then she began shaking her head.
"Marcus, please.""
Tyler returned the camera to himself.
"Your mother knew where the agreement was. Your sister knows something about it too. I think it's time everyone stopped pretending.""
The call ended.
Marcus stood motionless.
James looked at him.
"He's bluffing.""
Marcus turned.
"How do you know?""
"Because he needs that document.""
"Then why would he hurt Olivia?""
James had no answer.
At the old Bennett property, a different kind of confrontation was taking place.
Vanessa stepped out of her car.
The building stood at the end of a narrow road, surrounded by overgrown trees.
She had driven there because Tyler had stopped answering her calls.
Now she understood why.
A light was visible through a side window.
She entered.
"Tyler?""
A door opened.
Patricia stepped out.
Vanessa stopped.
"Mom?""
Patricia looked exhausted.
"What are you doing here?""
"Trying to find Tyler.""
Her mother glanced toward the back room.
"He's inside.""
Vanessa approached.
"Why are you here?""
Patricia lowered her voice.
"Because I made a mistake.""
"What kind of mistake?""
"I trusted him.""
Vanessa stared.
"Mom, you told me he was working with Dad.""
Patricia closed her eyes.
"He was supposed to help recover the money Richard believed belonged to us.""
"And now?""
"Now he's trying to take everything.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"Everything was supposed to go to us.""
Patricia looked at her daughter.
"Vanessa, listen to me. Your father never wanted you to marry Marcus for his money.""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"That's exactly what Tyler said he wanted.""
"Tyler lied.""
Patricia reached into her purse and removed a small photograph.
It showed Vanessa as a child, sitting on her father's shoulders.
Her father was smiling.
On the back, someone had written:
For my little girl. Everything I do is for you.
Vanessa's eyes filled.
"Why are you showing me this?""
"Because your father made a promise before he disappeared.""
"What promise?""
"That no matter what happened, he would never let anyone use you to hurt the Bennett family.""
Vanessa stared at her.
"Then why did he let this happen?""
Patricia looked toward the back room.
"Because he isn't the man you remember.""
A voice interrupted them.
"That's enough, Patricia.""
Tyler appeared in the doorway.
He was holding a folder.
Vanessa turned.
"Where is my father?""
Tyler smiled.
"Your father isn't coming.""
"What did you do?""
"Nothing he didn't deserve.""
Patricia stepped between them.
"Tyler, stop this.""
He ignored her.
"Vanessa, you need to understand something. The plan was never about Marcus's money alone.""
"Then what was it about?""
Tyler opened the folder.
Inside was a copy of the original trust agreement.
He pointed to a paragraph.
"Your father was entitled to a share of the original investment. But when the partnership collapsed, the Bennetts moved the assets into a family trust.""
Vanessa studied the document.
"So?""
"So the trust contains a clause that could restore ownership of certain properties to the original investors if fraud is proven.""
Patricia shook her head.
"That's not how the clause works.""
Tyler turned on her.
"Be quiet.""
Vanessa stepped backward.
"Why did you need me to marry Marcus?""
"Because marriage would give us access to his private financial records.""
"And the postnuptial agreement?""
Tyler laughed.
"That ruined everything.""
Vanessa looked at her mother.
Then back at Tyler.
"Did you know he was going to hear me?""
Tyler's expression hardened.
"Nobody planned for that.""
Vanessa felt sick.
For the first time, she understood that she had never been in control of the situation.
Tyler had used her.
Her mother had hidden the truth.
And her father, wherever he was, had apparently been part of something she couldn't understand.
Then Patricia whispered:
"Vanessa, we need to leave.""
Tyler pulled out his phone.
"No one is leaving.""
At the Bennett family property, Marcus was searching through the old house's foundation records.
Daniel had found an original architectural plan.
The house had been renovated twice, but one section of the basement had never been altered.
James studied the blueprint.
"Your mother used to keep her important things behind the old fireplace.""
Marcus frowned.
"Why?""
"Because your grandfather built a false wall there.""
They entered the basement.
Dust covered the floor.
A large stone fireplace stood against the far wall.
Marcus examined the bricks.
One looked slightly different.
He pressed it.
Nothing happened.
James approached.
"Try turning it.""
Marcus twisted the brick.
A soft click sounded.
A small panel opened.
Inside was a metal box.
Marcus pulled it out.
The lock had three number wheels.
Daniel looked at the notebook.
"Perhaps there's a date.""
Marcus examined the old entries.
He found a date repeated several times.
October 10.
His mother's birthday.
He entered the numbers.
The lock opened.
Inside lay several envelopes, a photograph, and a sealed legal document.
Marcus lifted the document.
The title read:
*ORIGINAL BENNETT–COLE PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT.*
Daniel examined the pages.
"Marcus, this is exactly what Tyler wants.""
James picked up the photograph.
It showed Evelyn standing beside a young man.
Marcus looked closer.
It was his father.
But there was something else.
A second woman stood beside them.
A woman Marcus recognized immediately.
Patricia Cole.
On the back, his mother had written:
The agreement was never about money. It was about what happened to our children.
Marcus turned toward James.
"What does that mean?""
James stared at the photograph.
Then he whispered:
"Your mother discovered that Richard and I had made a secret arrangement before you and Olivia were born.""
Marcus frowned.
"What arrangement?""
James looked at him.
"The original trust wasn't created to protect money.""
He paused.
"It was created to protect a child.""
Marcus felt his heart stop.
"Which child?""
James looked down.
"Vanessa.""
At midnight, Marcus received another message.
This time, it came from Olivia.
A short video.
She was still in the dark room, but Tyler was no longer standing behind her.
She looked directly into the camera.
"Marcus, listen carefully. I know why Dad told you not to trust me.""
Marcus leaned closer.
Olivia continued.
"There's something Mom told me before she died. Something I promised never to reveal.""
She swallowed.
"Vanessa isn't just the daughter of Richard Cole.""
Marcus stared at the screen.
Olivia's voice broke.
"She's also the beneficiary of the original Bennett trust.""
The video ended.
Marcus looked at James.
His father had gone completely pale.
Then James spoke.
"That's impossible.""
Daniel examined the agreement again.
He turned to the final page.
And there, beneath the signatures of Evelyn Bennett and Richard Cole, was a third name.
*James Bennett.*
Beside it was a handwritten note.
In the event of my death, the child named in this agreement must be reunited with her biological family.
Marcus slowly raised his eyes.
"Vanessa is your daughter?""
James didn't answer.
He couldn't.
Because at that moment, the man who had spent twenty-seven years hiding from his past finally understood what Richard Cole had been trying to accomplish.
He wasn't simply stealing the Bennett fortune.
May you like
He was trying to erase the truth about Vanessa's birth.
And if the original agreement became public, it would expose a secret that could destroy every person connected to the two families.
