Chapter 5: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Vanessa stared at the photograph until the image began to blur.

Her father stood beside Evelyn Bennett.

He was wearing a navy suit and holding a leather folder. Evelyn was smiling at the camera.

Behind them was the entrance to an office building Vanessa recognized from her childhood.

Her father's old investment office.

The problem was the date.

October 10, 2026.

Her father had died in 2017.

She looked at Tyler.

"Where did you get this?""

Tyler closed the laptop.

"From someone who knows more about your family than you do.""

"Stop speaking in riddles.""

"Your father wasn't the man you think he was.""

Vanessa stood.

"My father was a good man.""

Tyler laughed quietly.

"Then why did he spend his final years trying to get access to the Bennett family trust?""

Vanessa slapped him.

The sound echoed through the apartment.

Tyler slowly turned his face back toward her.

"Don't do that again.""

"Don't you dare speak about my father like that.""

"Then stop pretending you know everything about him.""

Vanessa's hands trembled.

She reached for her purse.

"I'm leaving.""

Tyler stepped aside.

"Go ahead. But before you do, ask your mother why she never told you about the Bennett family.""

Vanessa stopped.

"What does my mother have to do with this?""

Tyler opened a drawer and removed a folded document.

He placed it on the counter.

"Read it.""

Vanessa unfolded the paper.

It was a copy of a corporate agreement dated eleven years earlier.

Her father's name appeared near the bottom.

So did Evelyn Bennett's.

The document described an investment partnership between two families.

One side was the Bennett estate.

The other was a company called Cole Financial Group.

Vanessa's eyes moved to the ownership structure.

Then she saw the clause.

Her father had been promised a percentage of the profits from a major commercial development if he successfully arranged the transfer of certain property interests.

But the project had collapsed.

And the Bennett family had refused to cover the losses.

Vanessa looked up.

"Why am I seeing this?""

Tyler folded his arms.

"Because your father believed the Bennetts cheated him.""

"Did they?""

"That's what he spent the rest of his life trying to prove.""

Vanessa looked at the photograph again.

"Why didn't my mother tell me?""

Tyler shrugged.

"Perhaps she didn't want you to know that your father left behind more than debts.""

Vanessa stared at him.

"What debts?""

Tyler leaned forward.

"Ask her.""

Patricia Cole was waiting in her kitchen when Vanessa arrived.

The house smelled of freshly brewed coffee, but neither woman touched the cup sitting on the counter.

Vanessa placed the photograph in front of her mother.

"Tell me the truth.""

Patricia looked down.

Her expression changed.

"Where did you get this?""

"Tyler.""

Patricia closed her eyes.

"That man should never have shown you that.""

"Was Dad involved with Marcus's family?""

Patricia remained silent.

"Mom!""

"Yes.""

Vanessa took a step backward.

"For how long?""

"Years.""

"Did he know Marcus's mother?""

Patricia nodded.

"Your father and Evelyn Bennett were business partners.""

Vanessa felt as though the floor had shifted beneath her.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because it was complicated.""

"That's not an answer.""

Patricia pulled out a chair.

"Your father believed the Bennetts had taken something from him. He invested a substantial amount of money in a development project with Marcus's grandfather. When the project failed, the Bennett family protected their assets and left your father exposed.""

"Was that true?""

"I don't know.""

"You were married to him!""

"I was not involved in every business decision he made.""

Vanessa picked up the photograph.

"Then why are you involved with Tyler's company?""

Patricia looked away.

Vanessa understood.

"Mom.""

Patricia's eyes filled.

"Your father left instructions.""

"What instructions?""

"He wanted the family to recover what he believed we were owed.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"By marrying Marcus?""

Patricia didn't respond.

"By taking his properties?""

"Your father believed the Bennett family had taken everything from us.""

"That doesn't make it right!""

Patricia stood.

"Don't lecture me about right and wrong. You have no idea what your father sacrificed.""

Vanessa stared at her.

"Did you know Tyler was planning to transfer the property?""

Patricia hesitated.

Then she answered.

"I knew there was a plan.""

Vanessa stepped away.

"You're telling me you knew all along?""

"I wanted you protected.""

"Protected from what?""

Patricia's voice broke.

"From becoming like me.""

For several seconds, Vanessa said nothing.

Then she asked the question that had been bothering her since she saw the photograph.

"Mom, is Dad really dead?""

Patricia's face went completely still.

And that was when Vanessa knew the answer was not going to be simple.

At Daniel's office, Marcus was studying a different set of records.

He had barely slept.

Olivia sat across from him with a notebook.

Daniel placed a printed report on the desk.

"I found the original Northbridge registration.""

Marcus looked up.

"Who owns it?""

"An offshore holding company. But I traced its local representative.""

Daniel turned the page.

A familiar name appeared.

*Richard Cole.*

Marcus frowned.

"Vanessa's father?""

Daniel nodded.

"According to public records, he was reported deceased in 2017. However, his name appears on several corporate filings from this year.""

Olivia leaned forward.

"Are you saying he's alive?""

"I'm saying someone has been using his identity. We need more evidence before reaching that conclusion.""

Marcus examined the documents.

"Could Tyler be acting on his behalf?""

"Possibly.""

Olivia looked at Marcus.

"Why would a dead man be connected to this?""

Daniel closed the folder.

"That's exactly what we need to find out.""

Marcus stood and walked to the window.

A memory suddenly surfaced.

Eleven years earlier, he had been seventeen.

His mother had been sitting at the dining-room table, speaking quietly with a man he barely remembered.

He recalled the man's expensive watch.

The smell of tobacco.

And the way his mother had looked frightened when Marcus entered the room.

She had quickly told him to go upstairs.

He had never asked about it.

Now he wondered whether that man had been Richard Cole.

"Daniel, I need the original trust documents.""

"Why?""

"Because I want to know exactly what Mom was protecting.""

Daniel nodded.

"I'll request them from the trustee.""

Olivia opened her notebook.

"There is something else I found.""

She slid her phone across the desk.

It showed an old photograph of Evelyn standing in front of the Bennett family home.

Beside her was a young Marcus.

And behind them, partially hidden by the doorway, stood a man.

Marcus picked up the phone.

He recognized the face immediately.

It was the same man from Vanessa's photograph.

Richard Cole.

Marcus looked at the date.

October 10, 2015.

Two years before Richard's reported death.

"Why was he at our house?""

Olivia shook her head.

"I don't know.""

Marcus zoomed in.

Something was visible in Richard's hand.

A small black notebook.

Marcus remembered it.

His mother used to keep a notebook like that in her bedroom drawer. After she died, he searched for it because he wanted to keep her handwriting.

He never found it.

"Daniel, did the estate inventory include a black notebook?""

Daniel checked the records.

"No.""

"Then somebody took it.""

At 6:40 p.m., Marcus received an email from an unknown sender.

The subject line read:

*YOUR MOTHER'S LAST BUSINESS DEAL.*

He opened it.

There was no greeting.

Only a message.

Mr. Bennett, you have been investigating the wrong people.

Vanessa Cole is not the person who started this.

Tyler Reynolds is not the person controlling it.

And Richard Cole may not be the person you need to fear.

An attachment appeared beneath the message.

Marcus downloaded it.

It was a scanned page from his mother's personal notebook.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

He read the first paragraph.

Then his face changed.

The entry was dated October 8, 2015.

Two days before the photograph with Richard Cole.

If anything happens to me, Marcus and Olivia must never be told the full truth until they are old enough to understand what their father did.

Marcus stopped.

He read it again.

Their father.

Not their grandfather.

Their father had died when Marcus was nine.

He had always been told it was a tragic accident.

Olivia looked at him.

"What is it?""

Marcus couldn't speak.

He turned the laptop toward her.

She read the entry.

Then she covered her mouth.

"Marcus...""

He scrolled down.

There was one more sentence.

Richard knows where the original agreement is hidden. If he returns, do not trust him.

Marcus stared at the screen.

Then another email arrived.

This one contained a photograph.

It showed a man sitting inside a restaurant.

Older. Thinner. Gray hair.

But unmistakably alive.

May you like

The message beneath the photograph contained only six words.

*Your father is waiting to meet you.*
