Chapter 2: The Name Behind the Canvas Tote

Danielle had always hated being treated differently because of her father's money.
It was one of the reasons she had chosen to live independently after graduating from college.
She didn't want strangers looking at her and seeing a bank account.
She wanted them to see Danielle.
A woman who worked hard, loved her family, and could make her own decisions.
Her father, however, had never been particularly comfortable with that arrangement.
His name was Richard Brooks.
To the public, Richard was the founder and chairman of Brooks Meridian Group, a multinational investment and hospitality company with properties across the United States, Europe, and the Caribbean.
He owned hotels, commercial buildings, and several luxury resort developments.
His name appeared in business magazines.
His signature could move millions of dollars.
And he had a reputation for being one of the most difficult men in the hospitality industry to deceive.
But at home, he was simply the father who still called his thirty-year-old daughter baby girl.
When Danielle married her late husband, he had given her a choice.
She could take a position in the family company, or she could build a life entirely outside it.
She chose the latter.
Richard respected that decision.
He also respected her request that the resort staff not be told about her family connection.
The reservation had been made under her own name.
No special treatment.
No security entourage.
No announcements.
She wanted a peaceful weekend with her newborn daughter, Amara.
Instead, she was sitting in the middle of a luxury hotel lobby with a swollen cheek.
And her father was on his way.
“Are you still planning to sit here?”” Vanessa asked.
Danielle didn't look up.
“Yes.””
Vanessa checked her diamond-studded watch.
“Marcus, how much longer are we going to tolerate this?””
Marcus glanced at the clock.
“I'm handling it, Mrs. Whitmore.””
“Then handle it.””
He approached Danielle again.
“Miss Brooks, I have already asked you to leave.””
“And I've already told you I'm waiting for my father.””
“Your father isn't a guest here.””
“You don't know that.””
Marcus gave a humorless smile.
“I know enough.””
Danielle adjusted Amara's blanket.
“Then perhaps you should stop making assumptions.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Do you know who my husband is?””
Danielle sighed.
“No.””
“My husband is Jonathan Whitmore. He has invested millions into this resort.””
Danielle looked at her.
“Congratulations.””
Vanessa's mouth fell open.
“Excuse me?””
“I said congratulations.””
A guest near the lobby bar almost choked on his coffee.
Vanessa's face turned red.
“You have absolutely no idea who you're dealing with.””
“Neither do you,” Danielle replied.
Marcus stepped between them.
“That's enough. Mrs. Whitmore, please allow me to handle this.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I'm tired of being disrespected.””
Then she looked directly at Danielle.
“People like you come into places like this expecting everyone to bend over backward. You think carrying a baby gives you permission to do whatever you want?””
Danielle's expression changed.
“Don't talk about my daughter.””
“Then stop using her as an excuse.””
“I'm not using her as anything. She's my child.””
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“Whatever.””
At that moment, a bellman named Thomas approached with a luggage cart.
He had been working at the hotel for eleven years.
He had seen wealthy guests arrive with enormous entourages and leave without tipping a single employee.
He had also seen families like Danielle's arrive quietly, treat everyone with kindness, and never ask for special attention.
He recognized her from the previous afternoon.
“Ms. Brooks?”” he asked.
Danielle turned.
“Hello, Thomas.””
His eyes immediately moved to her cheek.
“Are you all right?””
Before she could answer, Marcus interrupted.
“Thomas, this isn't your concern.””
Thomas frowned.
“I was just asking if she needed assistance.””
“She doesn't.””
Danielle looked at him.
“Thank you, Thomas. I'm okay.””
He noticed the baby crying and crouched slightly.
“Hello there, little one.””
Amara's tiny fingers moved beneath the white blanket.
Thomas smiled.
“Beautiful baby.””
For the first time since the incident, Danielle managed a small smile.
“Thank you.””
Vanessa watched the exchange with irritation.
“Can someone please move this luggage cart? It's blocking the entrance.””
Thomas stood.
“Of course, ma'am.””
He began pushing the cart aside.
But as he passed Marcus, he leaned closer.
“Sir, I think we should check the cameras.””
Marcus lowered his voice.
“Stay out of it.””
“I saw what happened.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
Thomas glanced toward Vanessa.
“I saw her slap the young lady.””
Vanessa turned immediately.
“That's a lie!””
Thomas didn't flinch.
“I was standing near the concierge desk.””
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
“Thomas, are you certain?””
“Completely certain.””
Vanessa pointed at him.
“Be careful. I know people who can make sure you never work in this industry again.””
Thomas tightened his grip on the cart.
“I'm only telling you what I saw.””
Danielle looked at him gratefully.
“Thank you.””
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
“Enough. We'll review the footage later.””
“Later?”” Thomas asked.
Marcus gave him a warning look.
“That's an instruction.””
Thomas pushed the cart away, but he wasn't finished.
As soon as he reached the service corridor, he took out his phone and sent a message to the hotel's security supervisor.
Please preserve the lobby footage from 2:15 p.m. Something happened near reception. Management is trying to avoid reviewing it.
He didn't know who Danielle Brooks was.
He simply knew what was right.
Meanwhile, Vanessa had moved closer to the reception desk.
Emily was trying to complete a guest registration when Vanessa placed her handbag on the counter.
“Get me the general manager.””
Emily looked up.
“Mr. Reed is the manager on duty.””
“I don't want him. I want someone above him.””
“Certainly, ma'am.””
“And I want that woman out before my husband arrives.””
Emily hesitated.
“Mrs. Whitmore, Ms. Brooks has a reservation.””
Vanessa leaned over the counter.
“Do you want to keep your job?””
Emily went pale.
“I beg your pardon?””
“You heard me. My husband has connections here. I can have this entire front desk replaced before dinner.””
Emily looked toward Danielle.
Then she quietly picked up the desk phone.
She dialed the general manager's office.
No answer.
She tried again.
Still nothing.
Marcus approached.
“What's the issue?””
Vanessa smiled sweetly.
“Your employee is being difficult.””
Emily's fingers tightened around the phone.
“I'm trying to contact Mr. Lawson.””
Marcus frowned.
“Why?””
“Because I believe we need someone senior to review what happened.””
His expression hardened.
“Emily, you're making this more complicated than necessary.””
Vanessa laughed.
“She's clearly inexperienced.””
Then she turned to Danielle.
“Your father must be taking his time.””
Danielle looked at the entrance.
“I told you he's coming.””
Vanessa shrugged.
“Maybe he doesn't want to.””
Danielle felt the words land harder than she expected.
Her father had been the one person who had never abandoned her.
After her husband died, Richard had spent months helping her prepare for motherhood. He had painted the nursery himself, despite the protests of his personal assistant, and had driven four hours just to bring her the particular brand of tea she liked.
He had never once made her feel like a burden.
But Vanessa didn't know any of that.
And Danielle wasn't going to explain her family history to a stranger.
She simply whispered to her daughter.
“Daddy's coming, sweetheart.””
Then a voice came from behind the reception desk.
“Mrs. Whitmore?””
Vanessa turned.
A young security officer stood there.
“Yes?””
“We need to speak with you about the incident.””
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
“What incident?””
“The physical altercation in the lobby.””
She glanced at Marcus.
“Are you serious?””
The security officer nodded.
“Mr. Reed has requested that we document what happened.””
Marcus quickly interrupted.
“I haven't requested anything of the sort.””
The officer looked confused.
“But sir, the security supervisor said—”
“That's enough.””
Vanessa smiled again.
“Good. Finally, someone understands.””
Then the security officer added something that made the smile disappear.
“The supervisor also asked us to preserve the camera footage. Apparently, there are several witnesses.””
Danielle slowly raised her head.
Vanessa stared at Marcus.
“Make that footage disappear.””
The words escaped before she realized how loudly she had spoken.
Everyone near the desk heard them.
Marcus went completely still.
Emily looked up.
And Thomas, who had returned from the service corridor, stopped pushing his luggage cart.
Danielle stared at Vanessa.
“Why would you want the footage to disappear?””
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
“I didn't say that.””
“You just did.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Let's all calm down.””
But the damage had already been done.
The security officer reached for his radio.
“Control room, this is Officer Harris. Lock the lobby recording. Do not overwrite any footage from the last hour.””
A crackling response came through.
“Understood.””
Vanessa grabbed her handbag.
“This is ridiculous.””
She turned toward Marcus.
“Call my husband.””
Marcus nodded quickly.
“Yes, ma'am.””
He walked several steps away and pulled out his phone.
But before he could make the call, another phone began ringing.
It belonged to the general manager.
And the name displayed on the screen made Marcus's face lose its color.
*RICHARD BROOKS — CHAIRMAN'S OFFICE.*
Marcus stared at it.
Vanessa noticed his expression.
“Who is it?””
He didn't answer immediately.
The phone kept ringing.
“Marcus?”” Vanessa demanded.
He swallowed.
“It's… the chairman.””
“What chairman?””
Marcus looked toward Danielle.
For the first time, he seemed to be wondering whether the young mother on the floor was exactly who she claimed to be.
He answered.
“Good afternoon, sir.””
A deep voice came through the speaker.
“Put me on with the general manager. Immediately.””
Marcus swallowed again.
“Of course, sir.””
“And Mr. Reed?””
“Yes?””
“I understand there's an incident involving a guest and my granddaughter.””
Marcus's hand began to tremble.
The chairman continued.
“Tell me why my daughter is sitting on the floor while your staff are ordering her to leave.””
The call went silent.
Marcus slowly lowered the phone.
Vanessa stared at him.
“What did he just say?””
Marcus looked at Danielle.
Then at Vanessa.
May you like
And finally, he whispered:
“That's Richard Brooks's daughter.””
