Chapter 4: The Footage They Never Wanted Anyone to See

Vanessa read her husband's message three times.

There is something about that family you don't know. And if Richard reveals it, our marriage may be over.

Her fingers tightened around the phone.

She looked across the lobby at Danielle, who was standing beside her father with the newborn safely tucked against her shoulder.

Danielle wasn't smiling.

She wasn't celebrating.

She wasn't even looking at Vanessa.

Somehow, that made everything worse.

“Mrs. Whitmore?”” Marcus whispered.

Vanessa quickly locked her phone.

“What?””

“Mr. Brooks wants everyone in the security office.””

“I heard him.””

“Are you coming?””

She looked toward Richard.

“Do I have a choice?””

Marcus didn't answer.

Across the lobby, Richard was speaking quietly to his daughter.

“Are you sure you don't want to sit down?””

“I'm fine, Dad.””

“Danielle, sweetheart, your cheek is swelling.””

“I know.””

“Then let someone look at it.””

She glanced at Amara.

“I just want her settled first.””

Richard nodded.

“Of course.””

He reached into his jacket and handed her a small bottle of water.

Danielle accepted it.

“Thank you.””

Richard smiled faintly.

“You don't have to thank me for being your father.””

For a moment, the noise of the lobby seemed to fade.

Then Patricia Ellis approached.

“Mr. Brooks, the security team has secured the recording.””

“Good.””

She glanced at Danielle.

“Would you like to remain here while we review it?””

Danielle shook her head.

“No. I want to see it.””

Richard studied her expression.

“Are you certain?””

“Yes. I don't want anyone telling a different story later.””

He nodded.

“Then we'll watch it together.””

The security office was on the second floor, behind a restricted-access door.

Inside, six monitors displayed different areas of the property.

The beach entrance.

The swimming pool.

The elevators.

The reception desk.

And the lobby.

Officer Harris sat at the main console.

“Mr. Brooks, we've isolated the recording from approximately 2:10 p.m. onward.””

Richard pulled a chair beside Danielle.

“Play it.””

The screen flickered.

There was the lobby.

There was Danielle, walking slowly toward reception with Amara in her arms.

There was Vanessa, entering from the opposite side.

The footage showed Vanessa turning abruptly, striking Danielle across the face, and sending her stumbling backward.

The baby remained protected against Danielle's chest as she fell.

Nobody spoke.

The recording continued.

It showed Vanessa pointing at Danielle.

It showed Marcus arriving.

It showed Danielle explaining what happened.

And then it showed Marcus pointing toward the entrance.

Patricia leaned closer to the screen.

“Can you increase the audio?””

Officer Harris adjusted the controls.

The speakers crackled.

Vanessa's voice filled the room.

“People like you shouldn't be in this hotel.””

Then Marcus:

“Miss, you'd better leave before you cause any more trouble.””

Danielle closed her eyes.

Richard's jaw tightened.

“Keep playing.””

The footage continued.

Thomas appeared.

Emily tried to intervene.

Marcus silenced both employees.

Then came the moment Vanessa had probably forgotten.

She was standing beside reception when she said:

“Make that footage disappear.””

Patricia looked at Richard.

“That's significant.””

Richard didn't take his eyes off the screen.

“Save the original recording. Make two encrypted copies. Document every person who accesses it.””

Officer Harris nodded.

“Already done, sir.””

Vanessa suddenly stood.

“This is ridiculous.””

Everyone turned.

She pointed at the screen.

“That footage doesn't show everything.””

Richard looked at her.

“What exactly is missing?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“She provoked me.””

Danielle slowly turned.

“How?””

“You were rude.””

“I was holding my baby.””

“You answered me disrespectfully.””

“So you slapped me?””

Vanessa's voice rose.

“I already said I was upset!””

Richard stood.

“And you think being upset gives you permission to assault someone?””

Vanessa looked toward Marcus.

He quickly lowered his eyes.

She was beginning to realize that nobody in the room was going to defend her.

But she wasn't ready to surrender.

“My husband will resolve this,” she said.

Richard nodded.

“Your husband has thirty minutes.””

He turned toward Patricia.

“Prepare the incident documentation. I want the original footage preserved for the authorities.””

Vanessa's expression changed.

“Authorities?””

“Yes.””

“You're calling the police over a slap?””

Danielle finally spoke.

“Would you prefer I had fallen while holding my baby and hit her head?””

Vanessa went silent.

Richard looked at his daughter.

“You don't have to answer her anymore.””

Then he turned toward the security supervisor.

“Please arrange for a medical examination for Danielle and the baby.””

Officer Harris nodded.

“Yes, sir.””

As the officer stepped outside, Vanessa moved closer to Marcus.

“What are you doing?””

Marcus looked confused.

“What?””

“You need to tell them the recording is incomplete.””

“I can't do that.””

“Why not?””

“Because it isn't.””

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“Remember who got you this position.””

Marcus stared at her.

For the first time, he looked genuinely angry.

“You didn't get me this position, Mrs. Whitmore. I got it because I worked here for six years.””

“And my husband's investment—”

“Your husband's investment doesn't change what I saw.””

Vanessa recoiled.

Marcus turned away.

Richard had heard enough.

“Mr. Reed.””

Marcus immediately faced him.

“Yes, sir?””

“Your conduct today is being reviewed separately from the physical assault.””

“I understand.””

“You had a responsibility to protect every guest, not just the ones you considered important.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes, sir.””

Richard's voice became quieter.

“And those two employees who tried to tell the truth will not be punished for doing so.””

Patricia wrote something down.

“Understood.””

Danielle looked toward Thomas and Emily, who had been invited into the office.

“Thank you both,” she said.

Emily smiled nervously.

“I wish I had done more.””

“You tried.””

Thomas nodded.

“That's all anyone can do sometimes.””

Richard looked at both employees.

“Actually, sometimes doing more is exactly what makes the difference.””

He turned to Patricia.

“Make sure their statements are recorded properly. No retaliation.””

Patricia nodded.

“Absolutely.””

Then the office door opened.

A young security employee stepped inside.

“Mr. Brooks, there's a gentleman downstairs asking for you.””

Richard glanced at his watch.

“Name?””

“Jonathan Whitmore.””

Vanessa immediately straightened.

“My husband is here.””

The employee continued.

“He's not alone.””

Richard looked up.

“Who is with him?””

The employee hesitated.

“Two attorneys. And someone from the company's investment board.””

Patricia slowly closed her folder.

Richard's expression became unreadable.

“Send them up.””

Vanessa took a breath of relief.

Finally, she thought, someone was coming to rescue her.

But when Jonathan entered the room, he didn't look at his wife.

He walked straight toward Richard.

And the first words out of his mouth were:

“Mr. Brooks, before you hear anything from Vanessa, there's something you need to know about the resort's investment agreement.””

Richard's eyes narrowed.

“What does an investment agreement have to do with my daughter being assaulted?””

Jonathan looked toward Danielle.

Then at Vanessa.

May you like

And finally, he said something that made his wife step backward.

“Everything. Because my wife wasn't supposed to be anywhere near your daughter.””
