Chapter 6: The Signature That Changed Everything

Nobody spoke.
Jonathan stared at his wife as if she had just spoken another language.
“My signature?””
Vanessa nodded.
“On the transfers.””
He turned toward Eleanor.
“Show me.””
Eleanor carefully removed the envelope from the document case.
Inside were three printed authorization forms, copies of internal emails, and a digital access report.
She placed them on the table.
Patricia moved closer.
“Where did these come from?””
Eleanor answered.
“They were provided by an internal compliance officer this morning.””
Jonathan looked at the first page.
His signature appeared at the bottom.
It was familiar.
The same slanted J.
The same long horizontal line beneath his surname.
But something about it bothered him.
“This isn't my signature.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I told you.””
Jonathan lifted the paper.
“Who submitted this?””
Eleanor pointed to the digital record.
“According to the initial report, the documents were uploaded through an executive authorization portal.””
Jonathan shook his head.
“I haven't used that portal in months.””
Patricia examined the access log.
“Your credentials were used at 11:42 p.m. on four separate dates.””
“That wasn't me.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“I told you someone was using your account.””
Jonathan looked at her.
“You said you didn't know anything about the transfers.””
“I don't.””
“Then why did you tell me to destroy the old access token?””
Vanessa went still.
Richard looked up.
“What access token?””
Jonathan placed the document down.
“Last month, Vanessa told me the old security device was malfunctioning. She said it needed to be replaced.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I never told you to destroy anything.””
“You did.””
“I said it needed updating.””
Jonathan looked toward Eleanor.
“Can you check the device history?””
Eleanor nodded.
“Yes.””
She opened her laptop.
For several minutes, the only sounds in the room were the tapping of keys and the distant hum of the air-conditioning.
Danielle sat quietly beside her father.
Amara was asleep against her shoulder.
Richard leaned toward her.
“Are you tired?””
“A little.””
“Why don't you go back to the suite?””
Danielle shook her head.
“I want to understand what's happening.””
Richard nodded.
“All right.””
Patricia looked up from the papers.
“Mr. Whitmore, there's something else.””
Jonathan turned.
“What?””
“The first questionable transaction occurred three weeks before the New York gala.””
Jonathan frowned.
“What does that have to do with the gala?””
Patricia pointed to the date.
“The transaction was submitted using an administrative credential registered to the executive office. The gala complaint was filed the following day.””
Jonathan studied the page.
“So?””
“The same credential was used to modify the guest access list for the gala.””
Vanessa suddenly stood.
“That's irrelevant.””
Patricia looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because we're discussing financial transfers, not a party.””
Richard's expression hardened.
“Sit down, Mrs. Whitmore.””
Vanessa remained standing for a moment.
Then she slowly sat.
Jonathan looked at his wife.
“Did you change the guest list?””
Vanessa rubbed her forehead.
“I don't remember.””
“You told me you had nothing to do with it.””
“I didn't.””
“Then why is your account connected to it?””
Vanessa raised her voice.
“Because I was helping with the event!””
Danielle finally spoke.
“Helping?””
Vanessa turned toward her.
“Don't start.””
Danielle held her gaze.
“You had security escort me out of a charity event while I was pregnant. I never understood why.””
Vanessa looked away.
Richard placed a hand on his daughter's shoulder.
“Let her speak.””
Danielle continued.
“I wasn't there to impress anyone. I was there because my father had asked me to represent the foundation.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“You think everyone knew who you were?””
“No. That's the point.””
Danielle adjusted the baby blanket.
“You didn't know who I was, so you decided I didn't belong.””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Danielle continued.
“And today, you did exactly the same thing.””
For the first time, Vanessa had no immediate response.
Twenty minutes later, the forensic access report arrived.
Eleanor read through it carefully.
“Mr. Whitmore, the security device was registered to your office, but the physical access records show that it was used outside your building on two occasions.””
Jonathan frowned.
“Where?””
Eleanor checked the report.
“One location was your private residence.””
Vanessa looked down.
The other location was a hotel in Palm Beach.
Jonathan stared.
“What hotel?””
Eleanor answered.
“The Seabreeze Grand.””
Richard's expression changed.
He knew the name.
It was another property under Brooks Meridian.
Patricia leaned closer.
“When?””
“Three weeks ago.””
Richard looked at Jonathan.
“Were you there?””
Jonathan shook his head.
“No.””
Vanessa quickly spoke.
“I was.””
Everyone turned.
She swallowed.
“I had a charity committee meeting there.””
Eleanor checked the date.
“There was no registered charity event at that property on that day.””
Vanessa's face tightened.
“I met someone privately.””
“Who?”” Jonathan asked.
“It's none of your business.””
Jonathan stood.
“Apparently, it is.””
Vanessa looked toward Richard.
“Mr. Brooks, I think this is becoming an attempt to humiliate me.””
Richard didn't move.
“Then answer the questions and clear your name.””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she whispered:
“I met someone from the investment office.””
Jonathan stared.
“Who?””
She hesitated.
“Daniel.””
Jonathan frowned.
“Daniel who?””
“Daniel Mercer.””
Eleanor looked up immediately.
Patricia stopped typing.
Richard noticed both reactions.
“Who is Daniel Mercer?””
Patricia answered.
“He was the former financial director of the Whitmore investment group.””
Jonathan's face drained.
“He left the company eight months ago.””
“Yes,” Patricia replied.
“And you're telling me Vanessa met him three weeks ago?””
Eleanor nodded.
“The access logs suggest that someone used his old administrative credentials around the same period.””
Jonathan turned toward his wife.
“Why were you meeting Daniel Mercer?””
Vanessa began to cry.
“I was trying to fix something.””
“Fix what?””
She looked at him.
“The transfers.””
Jonathan took a step backward.
“What?””
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
“I found out that the records were wrong. Daniel told me he could correct them.””
“Correct them how?””
“I don't know!””
Jonathan slammed his palm against the table.
“Stop saying you don't know!””
Amara stirred.
Danielle gently rocked her.
Richard immediately looked at Jonathan.
“Lower your voice.””
Jonathan stepped away.
“I'm sorry.””
Vanessa looked at her husband.
“Jonathan, I was trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
She lowered her head.
“From Daniel.””
The room became quiet again.
Eleanor slowly closed her laptop.
“Mrs. Whitmore, did Daniel threaten you?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He said he had copies of the original investment records. He told me if I didn't cooperate, he would release them.””
Jonathan stared at her.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because he said you would lose everything.””
“Everything?””
“Our investment. Our properties. Our reputation.””
Jonathan sat down heavily.
Richard looked toward Patricia.
“Can we verify any of this?””
“We can investigate it.””
“Do that.””
Patricia nodded.
Vanessa suddenly turned toward Danielle.
“Please.””
Danielle looked at her.
Vanessa's voice trembled.
“I know what I did today was wrong. I know I shouldn't have hit you.””
Danielle remained silent.
“But you have to understand. I've been under enormous pressure. I haven't slept. I've been terrified about what Daniel might do.””
Danielle stared at her.
“Were you terrified when you slapped me?””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“No.””
“Were you terrified when you told the manager to throw me out?””
Vanessa looked down.
“No.””
“Were you terrified when you threatened the receptionist because she wanted to tell the truth?””
Vanessa couldn't answer.
Danielle's voice remained quiet.
“Then don't explain your behavior to me as if I caused it.””
Richard looked at his daughter with pride.
Jonathan rubbed his face.
“Vanessa, I need you to tell the truth. All of it.””
She nodded weakly.
“I will.””
But before she could continue, Patricia's phone rang.
She answered.
“Yes?””
A voice spoke rapidly on the other end.
Patricia's expression changed.
“Are you certain?””
She listened.
Then she looked at Richard.
“What happened?”” he asked.
Patricia ended the call.
“Security at the Seabreeze Grand has identified Daniel Mercer.””
Richard frowned.
“Identified him where?””
Patricia hesitated.
“In the building's underground parking garage.””
Jonathan stood.
“Was he arrested?””
“No.””
“Then what's the problem?””
Patricia looked toward Vanessa.
“Because he was attempting to access the hotel's private document storage room.””
Vanessa went completely still.
Eleanor asked:
“What was he looking for?””
Patricia opened the message sent by the security director.
Then she read aloud.
“According to the preliminary report, he was carrying a flash drive containing documents connected to the Brooks Foundation.””
Danielle's eyes widened.
“My father's foundation?””
Patricia nodded.
“Apparently.””
Richard's face hardened.
“What documents?””
Patricia scrolled down.
“The report says the drive contains a file labeled 'Maternal Initiative — Original Beneficiary Agreement.''”
Danielle looked confused.
“What's that?””
Richard didn't answer immediately.
He looked at Patricia.
Then at Eleanor.
Finally, he turned toward his daughter.
“Danielle, there's something I've never told you about the foundation.””
She frowned.
“What?””
Richard sat beside her.
“When your mother was pregnant with you, she established a private trust to protect women who had been abandoned during pregnancy.””
Danielle's eyes filled.
She had lost her mother when she was young, but she remembered the stories.
Her mother had been compassionate.
She had believed no woman should have to choose between keeping her baby and surviving financially.
Richard continued.
“That trust became the foundation's maternal initiative. And you were named its first beneficiary.””
Danielle looked down at Amara.
“What does that mean?””
“It means the trust was created to protect your future, and eventually the future of your children.””
She looked up.
“Amara?””
Richard nodded.
“Your daughter is included.””
Danielle swallowed.
“Why would Daniel Mercer have those documents?””
Richard's expression became darker.
“Because the trust was established with assets that were supposed to remain untouched.””
Patricia placed another report on the table.
“And according to the records we just received, those assets may have been transferred.””
Danielle stared at the page.
“How much?””
Patricia looked at Richard.
“Approximately $12 million.””
Richard stood slowly.
“Who authorized the transfer?””
Patricia looked at the screen.
Then she turned it toward him.
The authorization bore a familiar name.
Not Vanessa Whitmore.
Not Jonathan Whitmore.
It was signed by someone Richard trusted more than almost anyone.
*His own younger brother.*
Richard stared at the signature.
His face went completely still.
Danielle whispered:
“Dad?””
He didn't respond.
Then his phone began ringing.
The caller ID displayed one name.
*ROBERT BROOKS.*
Richard answered.
“Robert?””
His brother's voice came through, calm and almost cheerful.
“Richard, I hear you're making quite a scene at the resort.””
Richard looked at the signature again.
“Did you authorize a transfer from Danielle's maternal trust?””
A pause.
Then Robert laughed softly.
“Brother, I think it's time we finally discussed what really happened to your daughter's inheritance.””
The call ended.

And Richard realized that the woman who had slapped his daughter might not be the biggest threat in the room.
*The man responsible for the missing money shared his blood.*
