Chapter 8: Her Mother's Final Letter

Daniel Mercer was waiting in a private interview room when Danielle arrived.

Two police officers stood near the door.

Patricia Ellis sat beside Danielle, while Richard remained directly behind his daughter.

Mercer was thinner than Danielle expected.

His once-expensive suit was wrinkled, and his hands were clasped tightly on the table.

He looked at Richard first.

Then at Danielle.

“Ms. Brooks.””

Danielle sat down.

“You wanted to speak to me.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Mercer looked at the officers.

“Can we discuss the letter?””

Patricia answered.

“You can discuss whatever you wish. But anything concerning financial transactions must be documented.””

Mercer nodded.

“That's fair.””

Richard leaned forward.

“Start explaining.””

Mercer looked at him.

“Your brother hired me.””

Richard's expression remained still.

“When?””

“About eighteen months ago.””

“For what?””

“To restructure several private investment accounts.””

Richard folded his arms.

“And the trust?””

Mercer hesitated.

“It wasn't part of the original assignment.””

Danielle looked at him.

“Then how did you get involved?””

Mercer lowered his eyes.

“Robert told me the trust had become an obstacle.””

“What kind of obstacle?””

“He wanted to consolidate several assets into a private holding company.””

Patricia wrote something down.

“Did he have trustee approval?””

“No.””

“Did he know that?””

Mercer nodded.

“Yes.””

Richard's voice became colder.

“Then why did you proceed?””

Mercer looked toward Danielle.

“Because Robert told me he had your father's permission.””

Richard laughed once, without humor.

“Did you ask me?””

“No.””

“Then you knew you didn't have permission.””

Mercer looked down.

“Yes.””

Danielle studied him.

“Why did you keep doing it?””

Mercer took a breath.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of my uncle?””

He nodded.

“He told me he could destroy my career. He had access to financial records that could make it appear I was responsible for transactions I hadn't approved.””

Patricia interrupted.

“Were you responsible for any of them?””

Mercer nodded.

“Some.””

Richard leaned forward.

“So you admit your involvement.””

“Yes.””

“Then don't pretend you're innocent.””

Mercer looked at Danielle.

“I'm not asking you to believe I'm innocent.””

He reached into the clear evidence bag on the table and pointed toward the flash drive.

“But I want you to understand why I kept the letter.””

Danielle frowned.

“You had my mother's letter?””

“Yes.””

“For how long?””

“Since the day she died.””

Danielle's throat tightened.

She remembered her mother only in fragments.

A soft voice singing in the kitchen.

Warm hands smoothing her hair.

The smell of lavender lotion.

She remembered being told that her mother had left something important for her, but nobody had ever explained what.

“Why didn't you give it to my father?”” she asked.

Mercer swallowed.

“Because your uncle ordered me not to.””

Richard stood.

“What?””

Mercer continued.

“Robert told me the letter contained instructions that could interfere with his plans. He said it would cause a family dispute.””

Richard stared at him.

“And you obeyed?””

Mercer nodded.

“Yes.””

Danielle looked hurt.

“You kept something from me that belonged to my mother.””

Mercer lowered his head.

“I did.””

“Why?””

“Because I made a terrible decision.””

Silence filled the room.

Then Mercer asked the officers to retrieve the digital copy.

One officer placed a tablet on the table.

A scanned document appeared.

The paper was yellowed.

The handwriting was familiar.

Danielle recognized the first letter immediately.

Her mother's handwriting.

Her eyes filled.

At the top of the page were three words.

My dearest Danielle.

She touched the screen.

“Can I read it?””

Patricia nodded.

Danielle began.

“My dearest Danielle,

If you are reading this, then you have become a mother, and I hope you are holding your child close.

I wish I could be there to meet her.

I wish I could hear her laugh and watch you discover the beautiful, difficult world of motherhood.

But if life has taken me away from you, there is something I need you to understand.

You were never meant to inherit a fortune.

You were meant to inherit freedom.

The trust I created was not designed to make you wealthy. It was designed to make sure no one could ever use money to control your decisions.

I have placed a portion of my personal estate into a protected maternal fund.

Its purpose is to support women who are abandoned, mistreated, or denied dignity because they have children.

You are its first beneficiary, but you are not its only intended beneficiary.

When you become a mother, the responsibility passes to you.

Protect the fund.

Protect the women it serves.

And remember that wealth means nothing if it cannot protect someone who has nothing.””

Danielle stopped.

She wiped her eyes.

Richard looked down.

He had heard parts of his wife's wishes before, but never the complete letter.

Danielle continued.

“There is one more thing.

I know Robert has always wanted more responsibility in the family business.

I also know he believes money is the measure of a person's worth.

I have asked him to stay away from this trust.

Not because I hate him.

But because I know he has difficulty understanding the difference between owning something and being trusted with it.

If he ever attempts to take control of the fund, remember this:

The money does not belong to the Brooks family.

It belongs to the women whose lives it was created to protect.

And if you ever have a daughter, tell her the same thing.

With all my love,

Mom.””

Danielle couldn't continue.

She covered her mouth and began crying.

Richard moved beside her.

He placed one arm around her shoulders.

“I'm sorry, sweetheart.””

Danielle shook her head.

“She knew.””

“Yes.””

“She knew Uncle Robert might try something.””

Richard looked at the letter.

“Apparently.””

Mercer spoke quietly.

“There's another page.””

Danielle turned.

“What?””

He pointed toward the tablet.

“Your mother attached an additional instruction concerning the fund's administration.””

Patricia enlarged the final page.

A legal clause appeared beneath the letter.

It stated that the beneficiary could appoint an independent trustee upon the birth of her first child.

It also contained a provision allowing an immediate audit if any unauthorized transfer occurred.

Patricia looked up.

“Ms. Brooks, this means you have the authority to request a full independent review and suspend any disputed distribution until the investigation is complete.””

Danielle stared at her.

“I can do that?””

“Yes.””

Richard looked at his daughter.

“It's your decision.””

Danielle looked at the letter again.

Her mother hadn't left her instructions for revenge.

She had left her instructions for protection.

“I want the money returned,” Danielle said.

Patricia nodded.

“That's understandable.””

“But I also want the fund protected so this never happens to another woman.””

Richard smiled faintly.

“Your mother would have loved hearing that.””

Outside the interview room, Jonathan Whitmore was waiting.

He had been giving a formal statement to investigators about the investment records.

When Danielle emerged, he stood.

“Ms. Brooks.””

She looked at him.

“Yes?””

“I wanted to apologize.””

Danielle remained quiet.

Jonathan continued.

“I should have investigated what was happening in my company earlier. I should have questioned the financial records instead of accepting explanations.””

Patricia watched him carefully.

“Mr. Whitmore, your statement will need to be supported by documents.””

“I understand.””

He turned toward Richard.

“Mr. Brooks, I've already instructed our bank to freeze the accounts associated with the disputed transfers.””

Richard nodded.

“Good.””

Jonathan hesitated.

“And I've asked my attorneys to cooperate fully with your investigators.””

“That's the minimum expected.””

Jonathan accepted the criticism.

Then he looked toward Danielle.

“I'm sorry my wife hurt you.””

Danielle nodded.

“Thank you.””

Jonathan lowered his voice.

“I know that isn't enough.””

“No,” Danielle replied.

“It isn't.””

He looked down.

“I understand.””

At that moment, his phone rang.

He checked the screen.

His expression changed.

“It's Vanessa.””

Richard folded his arms.

“Answer it.””

Jonathan hesitated, then accepted the call.

“Where are you?””

Vanessa's voice came through immediately.

“Jonathan, I need you to come home.””

“Why?””

“I can't stay here.””

“What's happened?””

“I've made a mistake.””

Jonathan closed his eyes.

“What kind of mistake?””

“I need you to listen to me.””

“I'm listening.””

Vanessa began crying.

“Daniel told me Robert was going to blame everything on me. He said I had to destroy the original access records.””

Jonathan looked toward Richard.

“Did you?””

“No!””

“Vanessa, tell me the truth.””

She paused.

Then whispered:

“I made a copy.””

Jonathan's expression hardened.

“Of what?””

“The original transfer approvals.””

Patricia stepped closer.

“Put the call on speaker.””

Jonathan did.

Patricia spoke.

“Mrs. Whitmore, this is Patricia Ellis. Where are those documents?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“In my apartment.””

“Are they original records?””

“No. They're copies.””

“Who provided them?””

Vanessa's breathing became uneven.

“Daniel.””

Patricia looked at Jonathan.

“Ask her whether the documents contain Robert's authorization.””

Jonathan repeated the question.

Vanessa answered immediately.

“Yes.””

Richard stepped closer.

“What else?””

Vanessa was silent.

“Mrs. Whitmore?”” Patricia asked.

Finally, Vanessa spoke.

“There is something else in the folder.””

“What?””

“A recording.””

Jonathan frowned.

“Of whom?””

Vanessa's voice dropped to a whisper.

“Robert.””

Richard's eyes narrowed.

“What does it say?””

Vanessa began crying harder.

“He was talking about Danielle.””

Richard grabbed the phone.

“Put the recording where investigators can access it.””

Vanessa sounded frightened.

“I can't.””

“Why not?””

“Because he said if I ever released it, he would tell everyone what I did.””

Patricia intervened.

“Mrs. Whitmore, if you have evidence relevant to a financial investigation, preserve it. Do not delete or alter anything.””

Vanessa whispered:

“You don't understand.””

Richard's voice became cold.

“Then explain.””

She took a shaky breath.

“Robert didn't just steal money from the trust.””

Everyone went still.

“He planned to make it look like Danielle had authorized the transfers herself.””

Danielle stared at the phone.

“What?””

Vanessa continued.

“He told Daniel to prepare documents showing that you had signed away your rights.””

Richard looked at Patricia.

Patricia immediately began writing.

Danielle's voice trembled.

“Why would he do that?””

Vanessa answered.

“Because your mother left another condition in the trust agreement.””

Richard looked at the letter.

“What condition?””

Vanessa paused.

Then said:

“If the beneficiary was found to have voluntarily transferred control of the trust, the fund would automatically pass to the next named custodian.””

Patricia frowned.

“Who is the next custodian?””

Vanessa's answer came quietly.

“Robert Brooks.””

Silence.

Richard slowly turned toward the tablet.

His brother hadn't simply wanted twelve million dollars.

He had wanted permanent control of the entire maternal fund.

And the next part was worse.

Vanessa whispered:

“He already has a document with Danielle's signature.””

Danielle shook her head.

“I never signed anything.””

“I know.””

“Then whose signature is it?””

Vanessa took a breath.

“Your mother's.””

That night, Danielle returned to her suite with Amara.

Richard insisted on staying in the adjoining room.

Patricia remained downstairs with the investigators.

For the first time since arriving at the resort, Danielle was alone with her thoughts.

She placed her daughter in the bassinet and sat beside the bed.

The room was quiet except for the distant sound of waves.

She opened the scanned letter again.

Her mother's words appeared on the screen.

You were meant to inherit freedom.

Danielle touched the screen.

“I'm trying, Mom.””

A notification appeared.

It was an email from Patricia.

The subject line read:

*URGENT — ORIGINAL TRUST DOCUMENT LOCATED.*

Danielle opened it.

There was one attachment.

A scanned photograph of a legal document bearing her mother's signature.

Below it was a handwritten sentence.

If Robert ever gains control of this fund, the truth about Danielle's birth must be revealed.

Danielle stopped breathing for a moment.

Her birth?

What did that have to do with the trust?

Before she could read further, someone knocked on her door.

She looked at the clock.

11:46 p.m.

“Who is it?””

A woman's voice answered.

“It's Emily. From the reception desk.””

Danielle opened the door slightly.

Emily stood in the hallway, holding a small envelope.

“I'm sorry to disturb you.””

“Is everything okay?””

Emily shook her head.

“I found something in the old guest records.””

“What?””

Emily handed her the envelope.

“Your mother stayed at this resort twenty-nine years ago.””

Danielle looked at the handwriting.

It was addressed to Richard Brooks.

And beneath it were six words.

The child is not Robert's secret.

Danielle looked up.

“What does this mean?””

May you like

Emily swallowed.

“I think you should ask your father.””
