Chapter 4: The Man at the Door

The door opened.

The man in the navy suit stepped inside as if he owned the restaurant.

He was tall, maybe fifty, with silver threaded through his close-cropped hair. His suit was nearly identical to Marcus's, but everything about him felt colder. His eyes moved across the dining room without hesitation.

Then they landed on Nia.

He smiled.

“Nia Carter.””

Marcus moved in front of her.

“Can I help you?””

The man stopped.

“Marcus Reed.””

Marcus's face tightened.

“You know me?””

“I know everyone who works for the Whitmore family.””

Vanessa stood behind Nia.

Her fingers were still wrapped around Nia's wrist.

“Don't let him near her,” Vanessa whispered.

The stranger heard.

He smiled again.

“Vanessa, you're making this unnecessarily dramatic.””

“You followed me here.””

“I followed the envelope.””

Nia pulled her wrist free.

“Who are you?””

The man looked at her.

“Calvin Whitmore.””

The name hit the room like another piece of glass breaking.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Nia stared at her.

“You said my father had a brother.””

Calvin smiled.

“I am his brother.””

“My father never mentioned you.””

“He had his reasons.””

“What reasons?””

Calvin glanced at the key in Nia's hand.

“That key shouldn't be in your possession.””

Nia closed her fist around it.

“Then you came too late.””

Calvin's smile disappeared.

Marcus stepped closer.

“You need to leave.””

Calvin looked amused.

“This isn't your family, Marcus.””

“No,” Marcus said.

“But this is my restaurant.””

Calvin looked around.

“Technically, it isn't.””

The words were quiet.

Nia noticed Marcus's expression change.

Calvin continued.

“Your father used this restaurant as collateral.””

Nia turned to Marcus.

“Is that true?””

Marcus didn't answer immediately.

Vanessa did.

“He's lying.””

Calvin laughed.

“You always did confuse confidence with credibility.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Where is the rest of the file?””

Calvin's eyes sharpened.

“What file?””

“The one you were looking for.””

Calvin looked at Nia.

“Vanessa has been manipulating you.””

Nia raised the brass key.

“Then tell me what this opens.””

Calvin's eyes dropped to it.

For the first time, fear crossed his face.

It was brief.

But Nia saw it.

Marcus saw it too.

Calvin recovered.

“I don't know.””

“You looked scared.””

“I wasn't scared.””

“You were.””

Calvin stepped toward her.

Marcus blocked him again.

“Stay where you are.””

Calvin stared at Marcus.

“You have no idea what you're protecting.””

Marcus didn't move.

“I know I'm protecting my general manager.””

Calvin's jaw flexed.

Vanessa suddenly grabbed Nia's elbow.

“We need to go.””

Nia pulled away.

“I'm not going anywhere.””

“Your father left you something dangerous.””

“You knew him.””

“Yes.””

“You worked with him?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Once.””

Calvin answered for her.

“She betrayed him.””

Vanessa turned.

“That's rich coming from you.””

Calvin's voice hardened.

“You took money from him.””

“I returned it.””

“After you stole it.””

“I didn't steal anything.””

“Enough,” Nia said.

Both of them stopped.

Nia looked from Vanessa to Calvin.

“You're both talking like I'm supposed to understand something.””

She held up the note.

“My father wrote this.””

Calvin's eyes narrowed.

“What exactly did he say?””

Nia smiled without warmth.

“You tell me.””

Calvin didn't respond.

Nia took one step closer.

“You knew my father had a brother.””

“Yes.””

“You knew he left me a key.””

“Yes.””

“You knew about the envelope.””

Calvin said nothing.

“And you came here the second you found out Vanessa gave it to me.””

Still nothing.

Nia nodded.

“Then you know what's inside.””

Calvin looked at her.

“You're asking the wrong question.””

“What question should I ask?””

“Why did your father trust Vanessa?””

Nia looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa lowered her gaze.

That was enough.

Nia's stomach tightened.

“What did you do to him?””

Vanessa's head snapped up.

“Nothing.””

“Then why did he trust you?””

“Because I tried to protect him.””

“From Calvin?””

“Yes.””

Calvin laughed.

“You're hearing one side of a very old story.””

Nia turned toward him.

“Then give me yours.””

He stared at her for several seconds.

Finally, he said, “Your father stole something from me.””

Nia's eyebrows pulled together.

“What?””

“A company.””

Marcus looked at Calvin.

“That doesn't make sense.””

Calvin smiled.

“You've known Marcus for years, haven't you, Nia?””

“Yes.””

“Ask him what your father did with the original Whitmore restaurant group.””

Nia looked at Marcus.

His silence answered before his words did.

“Marcus?””

He swallowed.

“Your father and Calvin were business partners.””

“How long?””

“About twenty years.””

“And?””

Marcus looked toward Vanessa.

“And they had a falling-out.””

Calvin scoffed.

“That's one way to describe it.””

Nia's voice lowered.

“What happened?””

Calvin stepped toward the table.

“Your father forged documents, transferred ownership, and disappeared with millions.””

“That doesn't sound like my father.””

“You barely knew him.””

The words hurt.

Nia's face hardened.

“You don't get to tell me who my father was.””

Calvin pointed at the key.

“Then use it.””

Nia stared at him.

“What?””

“Use the key. You'll find out.””

“Where?””

Calvin smiled.

“You know where.””

Nia shook her head.

“No, I don't.””

Vanessa suddenly whispered, “The old house.””

Nia turned.

“My father's house?””

Vanessa nodded.

“The basement.””

Calvin's expression changed.

“You shouldn't have said that.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I think she deserves the truth.””

Calvin took another step.

“I think you've said enough.””

Nia moved between them.

“Stop.””

Her voice cut through the room.

Everyone froze.

She looked at Calvin.

“You came here because of this key.””

“Yes.””

“You're afraid of what's behind the door.””

“No.””

“You are.””

Calvin's lips pressed together.

Nia looked at Vanessa.

“And you're afraid too.””

Vanessa didn't deny it.

Nia looked at Marcus.

“Are you afraid?””

Marcus hesitated.

Then he nodded.

“A little.””

Nia almost laughed.

“Great.””

She slipped the key into her pocket.

“Then I'm definitely going.””

Calvin grabbed her arm.

Marcus reacted instantly.

“Let her go.””

Calvin tightened his grip.

“You have no idea what you're doing.””

Nia stared at his hand.

Then at his face.

“Let me go.””

He didn't.

Marcus stepped forward.

“I said let her go.””

Calvin finally released her.

Nia rubbed her wrist.

Calvin leaned toward her.

“Your father wasn't protecting you.””

He lowered his voice.

“He was hiding you.””

Then he turned and walked out.

The restaurant remained silent.

Nia watched through the glass as he crossed the street.

Vanessa exhaled.

Marcus locked the front door.

Nia turned toward him.

“Tell me everything.””

Marcus didn't move.

“Nia…”

“Everything.””

He looked at the brass key.

Then at the old note in her hand.

Finally, he said the words she had been dreading.

“Your father didn't die with all his secrets.””

He looked toward the window.

“Someone has been killing people who knew them.””

Nia's blood ran cold.

Before she could respond, her phone rang.

The screen showed her father's old number.

Marcus went pale.

Vanessa whispered, “Don't answer that.””

Nia stared at the phone.

It rang again.

And again.

Then a voicemail appeared.

The caller's message began playing automatically.

Her father's voice filled the restaurant.

“Nia, if you're hearing this, Calvin has found you.””

A pause.

Then:

“Whatever he tells you about my death—don't believe him.””

The message ended.

And from outside, a car engine suddenly roared.

Marcus rushed to the window.

The black SUV was gone.

But Calvin had left something behind.

A small white envelope sat on the sidewalk.

With Nia's name written across it.
