Chapter 8: The Final Ledger

Darkness swallowed the basement.

Glass rained onto the concrete.

Nia dropped instinctively.

Marcus tackled her mother behind the workbench.

Vanessa grabbed Nia's arm.

“Stay down!””

Another shot cracked through the room.

Calvin lunged toward the stairs.

“Get away from her!””

A third shot struck the wall.

Dust exploded beside Nia's head.

Then everything went silent.

Not peaceful.

Waiting.

Nia heard breathing.

Her own.

Marcus's.

Her mother's.

Then Calvin shouted.

“Come out!””

No answer.

Vanessa whispered, “He doesn't want us dead.””

Nia looked at her.

“How do you know?””

“Because if he did, he'd have thrown something down the stairs.””

Calvin turned.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at the darkness.

“He wants the ledger.””

Nia remembered the cabinet.

The files.

The hidden compartment.

The person upstairs knew exactly what they were looking for.

She crawled toward the workbench.

Her fingers found the cassette recorder.

A second compartment had opened beneath it.

Inside was a black flash drive.

Nia pulled it out.

A small label was attached.

*FINAL LEDGER.*

Her heart pounded.

She held it up.

“I have it.””

The footsteps above stopped.

A voice answered.

“Put it on the stairs.””

Nia recognized the voice.

Her blood went cold.

“Marcus?””

Marcus looked at her.

“I didn't say anything.””

But the voice had sounded exactly like him.

The man upstairs spoke again.

“Put it down, Nia.””

Calvin whispered, “That's not Marcus.””

“I know.””

“Who is it?””

Nia looked at the staircase.

Then at Marcus.

“Someone who knows all of us.””

Her mother whispered, “Then we have to leave.””

“There is no other exit.””

“There is.””

Her mother pointed behind the shelves.

Nia remembered the crawlspace.

Marcus pushed the shelves aside.

A narrow tunnel appeared.

“Go,” he said.

Nia shook her head.

“Not without you.””

“I'll follow.””

Calvin stepped toward the opening.

“No.””

Nia looked at him.

“You stay here.””

He shook his head.

“I'm not letting you go alone.””

She stared at him.

“You've had nineteen years to protect me.””

Calvin looked wounded.

“I'm trying now.””

“Then move.””

They crawled through the opening.

Marcus went first.

Nia followed.

Her mother behind her.

Vanessa last.

Calvin stayed in the basement.

Nia heard the shelves move back into place.

Then the tunnel went silent.

They crawled for what felt like minutes.

Finally, Marcus pushed open a wooden hatch.

They emerged inside the garage.

Cold night air hit Nia's face.

Her mother stumbled out.

Vanessa followed.

Marcus looked back.

“Where's Calvin?””

Nia shook her head.

“He stayed.””

“We have to go back.””

“No.””

“Nia—”

“He wanted us out.””

A gunshot echoed from the house.

Everyone froze.

Nia turned.

“Calvin.””

Marcus started toward the house.

Nia grabbed him.

“No.””

“He's in there.””

“He knew what he was doing.””

Another gunshot.

Then silence.

Nia's mother grabbed her hand.

“Please.””

Nia looked at her.

Her mother was crying.

Not for herself.

For Calvin.

The man Nia had spent the last hour learning was her biological father.

“Why did he stay?”” Nia asked.

Her mother whispered, “Because your father once did the same thing for us.””

Nia looked down at the flash drive.

“Then we're not leaving.””

Marcus stared.

“What?””

“We need to finish what they started.””

They returned to the restaurant through the back entrance.

The place was dark.

Marcus locked the doors.

Vanessa pulled down the blinds.

Nia placed the flash drive on the office desk.

“What do we do with it?””

Marcus shook his head.

“Find a computer that isn't connected to the restaurant network.””

He opened a drawer and pulled out an old laptop.

“I keep this for payroll backups.””

Nia inserted the drive.

A single folder appeared.

*WHITMORE — 1998–2026.*

She clicked.

Thousands of documents filled the screen.

Bank transfers.

Property records.

Bribes.

Names.

Politicians.

Police officers.

Judges.

Business owners.

Nia stared.

“This is huge.””

Vanessa nodded.

“That's why people have been dying.””

Marcus opened another file.

Then stopped.

“What?””

Nia looked over.

His face had gone pale.

“What is it?””

He turned the laptop toward her.

It was a list of payments.

One name appeared repeatedly.

*MARCUS REED.*

Nia stared at him.

Marcus stepped back.

“I never took that money.””

The room went silent.

Vanessa looked at the dates.

“Those payments were made while you were working for your father.””

“I know.””

“Then why is your name here?””

“I don't know.””

Nia looked at Marcus.

“You said you didn't know about the ledger.””

“I didn't.””

“You said you knew some things.””

“I did.””

“Then tell me what you knew.””

Marcus lowered himself into a chair.

“I knew your father was investigating Calvin.””

Nia waited.

“I knew he believed someone inside the restaurant was feeding information to him.””

“Who?””

Marcus looked at her.

“I never found out.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“That's not true.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You know something?””

“Yes.””

“What?””

Vanessa pointed at the screen.

“Those payments weren't to Marcus.””

Nia frowned.

“They have his name.””

“Look at the account number.””

Nia zoomed in.

The account was not Marcus's.

It belonged to a company.

*M.R. HOSPITALITY HOLDINGS.*

Marcus stared.

“I've never owned that.””

Vanessa's face changed.

“Oh, God.””

“What?”” Nia asked.

Vanessa whispered, “M.R.””

Nia looked at her.

“What?””

“Michael Reed.””

Marcus stood.

“My father.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Your father worked with Calvin before he disappeared.””

Marcus's face drained of color.

“My father died ten years ago.””

Nia looked at the ledger.

“Apparently, he didn't.””

A notification appeared on the laptop.

*NEW DEVICE CONNECTED.*

Everyone froze.

Marcus looked at the restaurant's security monitor.

The camera feed showed the front entrance.

Someone was standing outside.

Nia zoomed in.

Her mother's hand tightened around hers.

The figure lifted his face toward the camera.

It was Calvin.

Blood stained the side of his shirt.

He raised one hand.

Behind him stood another man.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Marcus stared at the screen.

“No.””

Nia looked at him.

“Who is that?””

Marcus couldn't speak.

Vanessa answered.

“His father.””

The man outside smiled at the camera.

Then he held up a piece of paper.

On it was one sentence:

*YOU HAVE THE LEDGER. WE HAVE YOUR MOTHER.*

Nia turned.

Her mother was still beside her.

Then she realized something.

The woman standing next to her wasn't her mother.

Nia stepped backward.

May you like

The woman smiled.

And behind the fake mother's ear, a tiny earpiece glowed red.
