Chapter 5: The Video Nobody Was Supposed to See

I didn't tell Emily about the photograph that evening.

She had enough to worry about without learning that the incident might have been recorded. Marcus drove her home, and I followed them to make sure she got inside safely.

Her apartment was quiet except for the hum of the air conditioner and the faint ticking of a clock above the kitchen doorway.

I placed her overnight bag beside the couch.

"Do you need anything before I leave?""

Emily shook her head.

"Water, medication, ice pack. I think I've got everything.""

"Call me if the pain gets worse.""

"I will.""

"And don't try to do anything with that arm.""

She gave me a look.

"Daniel, I'm injured, not five years old.""

"I know.""

"Then stop looking at me like you're about to wrap the entire apartment in bubble wrap.""

I laughed despite myself.

For a moment, things felt normal.

Then Emily looked toward the door.

"Are you going back to Vanessa?""

The question settled between us.

I sat on the edge of the coffee table.

"I need to talk to her.""

"About the honeymoon?""

"About everything.""

Emily studied my face.

"I don't want you making a decision tonight because you're angry.""

"I'm not.""

"You're definitely angry.""

"All right. I'm angry.""

She smiled faintly.

"But you also have to decide whether you can trust her," she said.

"Those are two different things.""

I nodded.

"I know.""

She squeezed my hand.

"Whatever you decide, don't stay because you're embarrassed to leave. And don't leave because you're embarrassed to stay. Do it because you understand what kind of life you want.""

I looked at my little sister.

Even hurt, she was still trying to make sure I didn't lose myself while defending her.

"I love you, Em.""

"I love you, too. Now go change out of that tux. You look like a man who lost a bet.""

I kissed her forehead and left.

By the time I returned to the resort, the reception had begun.

Music drifted through the ballroom doors. Guests were seated beneath the chandeliers, and the servers were carrying plates of roasted salmon and glazed vegetables.

From the corridor, I could see Vanessa at the head table.

She was smiling.

Her father sat beside her, talking animatedly to a man from my office. My mother sat across from them, her expression carefully neutral.

A microphone stood beside the wedding cake.

The master of ceremonies was preparing to announce the speeches.

I had been gone for less than two hours, but Vanessa had somehow managed to restore the appearance of a perfect celebration.

I entered through the side doors.

Several guests turned toward me.

One of Vanessa's cousins raised a glass.

"There he is! The groom returns!""

A few people laughed politely.

Vanessa saw me and immediately beckoned.

"Daniel! Come sit down. We're about to start.""

I took the empty chair beside her.

She leaned close enough that only I could hear.

"You've caused enough drama for one day.""

I looked straight ahead.

"I went to the clinic to see whether my sister was okay.""

"And now you're back. Good. Can we please act like adults?""

I turned toward her.

"Are you going to apologize to Emily?""

Her smile remained fixed for the guests.

"Not now.""

"When?""

"Daniel, please.""

"Tomorrow? Next week? When the photographs are finished?""

Her smile vanished.

"Stop.""

The master of ceremonies tapped the microphone.

"Ladies and gentlemen, if I could have your attention. We're about to hear from the groom's best man.""

Marcus stood near the dance floor.

Before he took the microphone, he glanced at me.

His expression told me he had seen the same things I had.

He cleared his throat.

"Good evening, everybody. For those who don't know me, I'm Marcus. I've known Daniel since college, which means I've spent years watching him make questionable decisions.""

The guests laughed.

Marcus smiled briefly.

"But one thing I've always respected about him is that he shows up for the people he loves. When my father passed away, Daniel drove six hours in the middle of the night just to sit with me. When my business nearly collapsed, he helped me get back on my feet without asking for anything in return.""

He paused.

"That's the kind of man he is. He believes family means more than appearances. And I hope the life he builds from today reflects that.""

His eyes met mine.

Then he raised his glass.

"To Daniel. And to a marriage where love is something you practice, not just something you promise.""

The applause was warm, but Vanessa barely clapped.

She leaned toward me.

"That speech was strangely pointed.""

I didn't respond.

The evening continued, though the atmosphere felt different. Guests danced, servers cleared plates, and the photographer moved between tables capturing smiles.

Vanessa pulled me toward the dance floor for our first dance.

"Just get through this," she whispered.

"We can argue tomorrow.""

I looked at the woman in front of me.

Her hair was perfect. Her makeup was untouched. The white gown shimmered beneath the lights.

I placed one hand against her back and let the music begin.

For the first few seconds, we moved together out of habit.

Then Vanessa leaned close.

"I need you to understand that I won't tolerate you making me look like a villain in front of our friends.""

I stopped moving.

She tightened her grip on my shoulder.

"Daniel, smile.""

"Why?""

"Because people are watching.""

I stepped back.

The music continued, but our dance ended.

Vanessa stared at me.

"What are you doing?""

"I'm not going to pretend everything is fine.""

Her face flushed.

"You are ruining this night.""

"No, Vanessa. I'm refusing to pretend you didn't hurt my sister.""

I walked off the dance floor.

Behind me, the music continued for several seconds before the DJ lowered the volume.

I headed toward the corridor where I'd seen the photographer's assistant earlier.

A young woman in a black blouse stood beside a table of camera equipment, checking files on a laptop.

She looked up when I approached.

"Hi. I'm Daniel Carter.""

Her expression changed immediately.

"Oh. The groom.""

"Yes. I was wondering whether you filmed the poolside photographs this afternoon.""

She hesitated.

"We filmed some behind-the-scenes footage for the resort's wedding package.""

"Would that include what happened to my sister?""

Her fingers stopped moving.

"I'm sorry. I didn't know she was injured.""

I took a breath.

"Did the camera capture the incident?""

She looked toward the ballroom, then back at me.

"Yes.""

My pulse quickened.

"Can I see it?""

She hesitated again.

"I need to check with my supervisor before I share any footage. We have privacy policies.""

"Of course. I'm not asking you to post it or send it anywhere. I just want to know what happened.""

She studied me for a moment.

Then she turned the laptop toward herself.

"I can check whether the clip is still in the working folder.""

She clicked through several files.

A video appeared on the screen.

The poolside terrace filled the frame. The camera's microphone captured the faint sound of conversation, the clinking of glasses, and the distant notes of the jazz quartet.

Vanessa stood beside Emily.

The image was clear.

I watched Emily shake her head and point toward the pool.

Then I heard her voice.

"Vanessa, I really shouldn't be near the edge.""

Vanessa stepped closer.

"You're standing on dry land. Stop acting like you're going to break.""

Emily moved backward.

Vanessa followed.

Then, with both hands, she shoved.

Emily fell into the water.

I felt my stomach twist, but I forced myself to keep watching.

The footage continued.

Guests rushed toward the pool. The camera swung briefly as the assistant moved closer.

Then Vanessa laughed.

"It was just a joke!""

I closed my eyes for a second.

When I opened them, the assistant was looking at me.

"I'm sorry," she said quietly.

I shook my head.

"It's not your fault.""

I watched the clip again, this time paying attention to what happened immediately before the shove.

Vanessa's face had changed.

Her smile disappeared after Emily refused to move closer.

She looked toward the camera, then toward the bridesmaids.

Then she leaned forward and said something too quiet for the microphone to capture.

Emily shook her head.

Vanessa's hands rose.

And the shove followed.

I leaned closer to the screen.

"Can you rewind that part?""

The assistant did.

I watched it three times.

The first time, I saw Vanessa's hands.

The second time, I saw her expression.

The third time, I noticed something in the reflection of the glass doors behind them.

A man stood inside the venue, holding a phone at chest height.

He appeared to be recording the terrace.

The assistant noticed it, too.

"That's strange," she murmured.

I stared at the reflection.

The man's face was partially obscured by glare, but his suit was familiar.

Dark blue.

Silver tie.

A small white flower pinned to his lapel.

I recognized him.

He was Vanessa's older brother, Christopher.

And he had been standing inside the venue before Emily ever fell into the pool.

I looked at the assistant.

"Can you save this clip?""

"I can preserve the original file, but I'll need my supervisor's authorization before releasing a copy.""

"Please preserve it.""

She nodded.

"I will.""

I returned to the ballroom with the footage burned into my memory.

Vanessa was standing near the head table, laughing with her mother.

When she saw me, she lifted her champagne glass.

"There you are. I was starting to think you'd disappeared again.""

I looked at her.

"Did Christopher record the pool incident?""

The glass stopped halfway to her lips.

For the first time that evening, Vanessa looked genuinely frightened.

"What?""

"Your brother. Was he recording Emily?""

She set the glass down.

"Why would you ask me that?""

"Because I saw him in the reflection of the video.""

Vanessa stared at me.

Then she glanced toward the far end of the ballroom, where Christopher stood talking to two guests.

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"Daniel, whatever you think you saw, you need to forget it.""

I felt the room grow very quiet around us.

"Why?""

She grabbed my wrist.

"Because if that video gets out, you'll destroy more than this marriage.""

I looked down at her hand.

Then I looked back at her.

"What exactly am I going to discover?""

She released me.

And before she could answer, Christopher appeared beside us.

He placed a hand on Vanessa's shoulder and smiled at me.

"Congratulations, brother-in-law," he said.

May you like

Then he leaned closer.

"We need to talk about what your sister was doing at that pool.""
