Chapter 7: My Sister Was Never Supposed to Be There
“Tell your husband the truth, Vanessa. Or I’ll have to tell him why his sister was really invited to this wedding.””
Christopher’s voice carried through the sitting-room door with the calmness of a man who believed he still controlled the conversation.
Vanessa stood frozen beside the table, her phone trembling in her hand.
I watched her face.
“Why was Emily invited?”” I asked.
She shook her head.
“Daniel, please. Not here.””
“Your brother just said my sister was invited for a reason. What reason?””
“There’s more to this than you understand.””
“Then explain it.””
A second knock sounded.
Christopher spoke again.
“Vanessa, open the door. We’re running out of time.””
I walked toward it.
Vanessa grabbed my wrist.
“Don't.””
I looked down at her fingers.
“Let go.””
She released me immediately.
For the first time that day, she seemed to understand that I wasn't going to follow her instructions simply because she gave them.
I opened the door.
Christopher stood in the hallway with his hands in his pockets. His silver tie remained perfectly straight, and his white boutonniere was still pinned to his lapel.
He looked from me to Vanessa.
“Good. You're both here.””
I stepped aside.
“Come in. Explain why my sister was invited to this wedding.””
Christopher entered, closed the door, and glanced at his sister.
“Did you tell him about the financial documents?””
Vanessa's face crumpled.
“Christopher, stop.””
He ignored her.
“Daniel, your sister contacted Vanessa several weeks ago. She had questions about some money that disappeared from an account connected to our family.””
I stared at him.
“What money?””
Christopher pulled out his phone.
“About forty-eight thousand dollars.””
Vanessa lowered her head.
I felt a cold sensation spread through my chest.
Forty thousand dollars. Now forty-eight thousand.
“What account?”” I asked.
“An account that belonged to our late grandmother. She established a small family investment fund before she died. Vanessa and I have both been involved in managing certain portions of it.””
“Why would Emily be asking about your grandmother's money?””
“Because Emily found a document suggesting that someone had transferred funds without authorization.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“You told me your business lost forty thousand dollars.””
“It did.””
“Was that money connected to this account?””
She didn't answer.
Christopher stepped forward.
“Let me explain. Vanessa made a poor investment. She intended to repay the money. It was a temporary transfer, not theft.””
“Did she have permission?””
Christopher's jaw tightened.
“That depends on how you interpret the account agreement.””
“That's not an answer.””
“Then let me be clearer. The paperwork is complicated.””
I laughed once, without humor.
“You've both spent the entire day telling me things are complicated whenever I ask a direct question.””
Christopher's expression cooled.
“Because you keep demanding simple answers to complicated situations.””
I took another step toward him.
“Did Vanessa take forty-eight thousand dollars without permission?””
He glanced at his sister.
She finally spoke.
“I borrowed it.””
I stared at her.
“From an account you didn't own?””
“I was going to put it back.””
“When?””
“When the boutique started making money.””
“Your boutique failed.””
“I know that!””
Her voice cracked.
She sat down heavily, pressing both hands against her forehead.
“I know it failed, Daniel. I know I made a mistake. I was ashamed, and I didn't know how to fix it.””
I tried to absorb what she was saying.
We had spent months discussing our future. I had shown her my savings statements. I had explained how much I wanted us to be financially secure before having children.
All the while, she had hidden a financial problem large enough to change the course of our lives.
And apparently, my sister had discovered it before I did.
“How did Emily find out?”” I asked.
Christopher answered.
“She was helping with some administrative work for the family trust.””
I turned toward him.
“Emily works in accounting. You asked her to review the records?””
“Not exactly.””
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
“Christopher needed help organizing documents before the wedding. Emily offered to look through them because she was already visiting the family office.””
“And she found the transfer.””
“Yes.””
I looked at Christopher.
“Why was my sister reviewing financial records for your family?””
He hesitated.
Then he said, “Because I asked her to.””
The answer made no sense.
“You asked her to review documents, she found a suspicious transfer, and then you arranged for her to be at the wedding?””
Christopher's face hardened.
“She was already invited before any of this happened.””
“Then why did you say she was invited for a reason?””
“Because we needed to discuss the documents.””
I stared at him.
“You could have called her.””
“She wasn't responding to my calls.””
“Maybe because she was recovering from surgery.””
Christopher shrugged.
“She was responding to Vanessa.””
I turned toward my wife.
“Is that true?””
Vanessa nodded reluctantly.
“Emily said she wanted to speak to me privately. She told me she had copies of the transfer records.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I was trying to resolve it before it became a bigger problem.””
I stared at her.
“You had weeks to tell me.””
“I thought I could fix everything.””
“And instead, you let me marry you without knowing you had concealed a financial scandal.””
Christopher immediately raised a hand.
“Let's not exaggerate. This is a private family matter.””
I turned on him.
“Stop calling it private when you're asking my sister to keep quiet about missing money.””
His face reddened.
“Your sister had no business threatening my family with financial accusations.””
“Did she threaten you?””
“She said she would take the documents to an attorney if we couldn't explain the transfer.””
“That sounds like a reasonable thing to do.””
Vanessa stood abruptly.
“She was going to ruin everything!””
The room fell silent.
I looked at her.
“What does that mean?””
She pressed her lips together, realizing too late what she'd said.
Christopher stepped toward her.
“Vanessa, don't.””
But she was already crying.
“The wedding, the trust, the money. Everything was going to come apart. I couldn't let that happen.””
“So you pushed her into a pool?””
“No!””
“Then explain why Christopher was supposed to scare her.””
Vanessa looked at her brother.
Christopher's eyes narrowed.
I understood then that whatever had happened between them was bigger than an impulsive act at the pool.
One of them had planned something.
The other had agreed to it.
And my sister had walked directly into the middle of their scheme.
Christopher finally spoke.
“I asked Vanessa to get Emily to hand over the copies. That was all.””
“How?””
“She was supposed to convince Emily to give us the documents voluntarily.””
“And if she refused?””
Christopher didn't answer.
I looked at Vanessa.
“What did you agree to?””
She shook her head.
“I thought he'd talk to her. I didn't know he would do anything physical.””
Christopher gave a bitter laugh.
“Don't pretend you had no idea what you were doing. You told me she needed to be frightened enough to stop interfering.””
Vanessa's face went white.
“You said you'd handle it!””
“I did handle it.””
“You told me nobody would get hurt!””
My stomach turned.
I stared at them both.
They were arguing about the details of a plan that had put my injured sister in a swimming pool, and neither seemed to realize that they were confessing to something far more serious than a wedding-day prank.
I pulled out my phone.
Christopher noticed immediately.
“What are you doing?””
“Calling an attorney.””
His expression changed.
“Daniel, put the phone away.””
“No.””
“This is a family issue. You don't need to involve strangers.””
“I'm not taking legal advice from someone who arranged to frighten my sister into surrendering financial documents.””
Christopher stepped closer.
“You don't understand what those documents contain.””
“Then tell me.””
He hesitated.
Vanessa began crying harder.
Christopher looked toward the door as if calculating whether he could leave before I made the call.
Then he said something that stopped me.
“The transfer wasn't the only problem. Your sister found a second document.””
“What document?””
Christopher looked at Vanessa.
She shook her head frantically.
“Don't tell him.””
He ignored her.
“A document showing who was supposed to inherit the remaining money if the trust was dissolved.””
I stared at him.
“And who was that?””
Christopher swallowed.
“Emily.””
For a moment, I couldn't speak.
My sister, who had spent the past three months struggling through physical therapy, had apparently discovered that she was connected to a family inheritance worth far more than either Vanessa or Christopher had admitted.
I looked at my wife.
“Why would Emily inherit your grandmother's money?””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“Because our grandmother changed the trust before she died.””
“Why?””
“Because she didn't trust Christopher with it.””
Christopher slammed his palm against the table.
“That's enough!””
The vase of lilies rattled.
Vanessa recoiled.
I stepped between them.
“Don't touch anything. Don't threaten anyone. We're done with secrets.””
Christopher stared at me.
Then he reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded sheet of paper.
“You want the truth?”” he asked.
“Fine. Read this.””
He dropped the document onto the table.
At the top was the name of a law firm.
Below it was a list of financial transactions.
And at the bottom was a signature that looked almost exactly like Emily's.
Except Emily had never signed it.
I knew that because I had watched her sign her name hundreds of times.
I picked up the paper.
Christopher leaned toward me.
“Now you understand why we needed those documents back.””
I looked at the signature again.
Then I looked at Vanessa.
“Who forged my sister's name?””
May you like
Neither of them answered.
And the silence told me that the truth was worse than anything they had admitted so far.
