Chapter 6: The Secret Behind the Shove

Christopher Hale had always struck me as the kind of man who could make a threat sound like friendly advice.

He was thirty-five, three years older than Vanessa, and worked in corporate risk management. He wore expensive suits without looking as though he had tried too hard, spoke in a measured voice, and rarely said anything he couldn't later deny.

At our engagement dinner, he had toasted me with a glass of bourbon and told me I was "a good man for Vanessa.""

At the rehearsal dinner, he had joked that marrying his sister came with a lifetime membership in the Hale family.

I'd laughed both times.

Now, standing beside me in the ballroom, he wore the same polished smile.

"We need to talk about what your sister was doing at that pool," he repeated.

I looked at Vanessa.

She had gone pale beneath her makeup.

"What does Emily's behavior have to do with anything?"" I asked.

Christopher chuckled.

"Nothing serious. I'm just saying that people are going to have different versions of what happened. You should be careful before you decide who's responsible.""

"There's a video.""

His smile remained, but something tightened around his eyes.

"Is there?""

"I watched it.""

He glanced toward Vanessa.

She stared at the floor.

Christopher adjusted his cuff.

"Then you know cameras don't always capture the whole story.""

"They captured Vanessa pushing Emily into the pool.""

He exhaled as though I were being unreasonable.

"Look, Daniel. You're upset. I understand that. But family matters can get complicated when outsiders start taking sides.""

I took a step toward him.

"Emily is my family.""

"And Vanessa is your wife.""

The word landed between us.

Wife.

I looked at the ring on my hand.

Christopher followed my gaze and lowered his voice.

"You've been married for a few hours. Don't make a permanent decision over an incident that can be handled privately.""

I almost smiled.

"Handled privately?""

"Yes.""

"By whom?""

He hesitated.

Then he placed a hand against my shoulder.

"By people who understand what's at stake.""

I moved away from his touch.

"Tell me what that means.""

Christopher's expression hardened for a fraction of a second before the smile returned.

"It means Vanessa has worked hard to build a life. She has a reputation, a career, and a family that cares about her. One unfortunate incident shouldn't erase all of that.""

"What about Emily's health?""

"Of course we care about Emily.""

"Then why did you record her falling into the pool instead of helping?""

For the first time, Christopher's smile disappeared.

"I didn't know she was going to fall.""

"But you were recording.""

"I was filming the wedding. The terrace was part of the event.""

"You were pointing your phone at them before Vanessa pushed her.""

He stared at me.

Then he looked toward Vanessa again.

She finally spoke.

"Daniel, stop interrogating my brother at our wedding.""

I turned toward her.

"Why was he recording?""

"Because he was taking pictures and videos. Is that a crime?""

"No. But it raises a question when the person recording doesn't seem surprised by what happens next.""

Christopher stepped between us.

"That's enough.""

His voice had changed.

The friendliness was gone.

"You're making accusations you can't support. If you want to discuss this, we'll do it tomorrow, when everyone is calm.""

I held his gaze.

"No. I want to know what happened today.""

He leaned closer.

"Then I suggest you think very carefully about what you're asking.""

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

"Christopher, please.""

He glanced at her.

Something passed between them.

Not a look of confusion.

Not the surprise of two people trying to understand a misunderstanding.

It was recognition.

The kind that comes when two people share information they don't want anyone else to discover.

I saw it.

And so did Vanessa.

She quickly turned toward me.

"Daniel, can we please go somewhere private?""

I looked at her for several seconds.

Then I nodded.

We walked into a small sitting room beside the ballroom. The room was empty except for two velvet chairs, a low table, and a vase of white lilies.

The moment the door closed, Vanessa began speaking.

"Christopher is trying to protect me.""

"From what?""

"From you making a mistake.""

I stared at her.

"By threatening me?""

"He didn't threaten you.""

"He told me to think carefully about what I was asking.""

"That's how he talks when he's worried.""

"Worried about what?""

She rubbed her forehead.

"Daniel, you have to understand something. Christopher has been helping me with a few personal matters. They're complicated, and I didn't want to bring them into the wedding.""

"What personal matters?""

She hesitated.

Then she sat down.

"Money.""

I remained standing.

"What money?""

"Some financial problems. Nothing that affects us directly.""

I waited.

She looked up at me.

"I had a business venture last year. It didn't work out the way I expected.""

"What kind of business venture?""

"A boutique.""

"You never told me you opened a boutique.""

"Because it was short-lived.""

"How much money did you lose?""

Her expression tightened.

"That's not the point.""

"It seems like the point.""

She rose from the chair.

"Daniel, I didn't want to burden you. I knew you were working hard, and I wanted to handle it myself.""

"With Christopher's help?""

"Yes.""

"How much?""

She looked away.

"About forty thousand dollars.""

I stared at her.

Forty thousand dollars was not a small amount, but the number itself wasn't what unsettled me.

It was the fact that I was hearing about it after marrying her.

We had discussed buying a house. We'd talked about combining our finances eventually. We'd sat with a financial adviser and reviewed our savings, debts, and plans for the future.

She had told me she had no major financial obligations.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I was embarrassed.""

"You're my wife. You're supposed to be able to tell me these things.""

She gave a bitter laugh.

"And you're supposed to trust me. Yet here you are treating me like a criminal because I made one mistake.""

I shook my head.

"This isn't about the money.""

"Then stop asking about it!""

She turned toward the door.

I moved aside to let her pass, but she stopped with her hand on the handle.

"Daniel, please. I need you to promise me something.""

"What?""

"Don't show anyone that video.""

I studied her face.

"Why?""

"Because people will misunderstand it.""

"The video shows what happened.""

"People will take it out of context. They'll say I meant to hurt her. They'll say I'm cruel.""

"Did you mean to hurt her?""

She didn't answer.

I waited.

Finally, she whispered, "I wanted her to stop embarrassing me.""

The confession was quiet, but it filled the room.

I stared at her.

"You wanted her to stop embarrassing you, so you pushed her into a pool?""

"I didn't think she'd fall like that.""

"How did you think she'd fall?""

Vanessa pressed her lips together.

Then she sank into the chair.

"I thought she'd stumble. Maybe get her dress wet. Everyone would laugh, she'd get annoyed, and we'd move on.""

I felt sick.

"You knew she had an injured arm.""

"I know!""

"You knew she couldn't catch herself properly.""

"I wasn't thinking!""

I took a breath.

"Then why were you angry with her in the first place?""

Vanessa covered her face with both hands.

For several seconds, the only sound was the faint music coming through the wall.

When she lowered her hands, her eyes were wet.

"Because she found something.""

I didn't move.

"What did she find?""

Vanessa stared at me.

"Something she wasn't supposed to see.""

The room seemed to shrink around us.

"What are you talking about?""

She stood abruptly.

"Nothing. Forget I said that.""

"Vanessa.""

"I said forget it!""

She grabbed her purse and began searching through it.

I watched her pull out a tissue, a compact mirror, and her phone.

Then she froze.

"What?"" I asked.

She looked at the screen.

Her face lost what little color remained.

I stepped closer.

"What's wrong?""

She held the phone against her chest.

"Nothing.""

"Show me.""

"No.""

"Vanessa, what did Emily find?""

She backed away.

"Daniel, please don't do this.""

"Do what?""

"Make me tell you everything.""

I stared at her.

"You just told me she found something. Now you're asking me not to ask what it was.""

Her phone vibrated again.

She glanced down.

I caught sight of a message before she turned the screen away.

It was from Christopher.

Did he see the file?

I looked up.

Vanessa was staring at me as if she had just watched a door slam shut.

"What file?"" I asked.

She shook her head.

"Please.""

Another message appeared.

If Emily told him, we have a problem.

My chest tightened.

I reached for the door.

Vanessa grabbed my sleeve.

"Daniel, don't talk to Christopher.""

I turned toward her.

"Why?""

She swallowed hard.

"Because he wasn't supposed to push her.""

The words came out so softly that I almost missed them.

I went completely still.

"What did you just say?""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

She looked toward the door, then back at me.

"I didn't mean—"

"Who wasn't supposed to push her?""

She covered her mouth.

For several seconds, she couldn't speak.

Then she whispered, "Christopher was supposed to scare her.""

I stared at my wife.

"Scare her into doing what?""

She shook her head desperately.

"I can't tell you.""

"Why not?""

"Because if you find out what was in that file, everything changes.""

I took one step toward her.

"Everything about what?""

Vanessa looked at me, and for the first time since the pool incident, there was no anger in her face.

Only fear.

Then someone knocked on the sitting-room door.

Three slow, deliberate knocks.

Christopher's voice came from the other side.

"Vanessa? Open the door.""

She closed her eyes.

I watched her grip the phone until her fingers trembled.

Christopher knocked again.

"Daniel, I know you're in there, too. We need to talk before Emily tells you the rest.""

I turned toward the door.

Then I looked back at my wife.

"What exactly did my sister discover?""

Vanessa's lips parted.

But before she could answer, Christopher spoke again.

May you like

And this time, he said Emily's name with a warning that made my blood run cold.

"Tell your husband the truth, Vanessa. Or I'll have to tell him why his sister was really invited to this wedding.""
