Chapter 8: The Signature That Wasn't Hers

I held the paper beneath the sitting-room light.

The signature at the bottom read Emily Carter.

The handwriting was close enough to fool someone who didn't know her. The capital E had the same tall first stroke. The final r curled slightly upward.

But Emily always signed her name with a small, deliberate space between the two words.

This signature had no space at all.

More importantly, the date beside it was from a Tuesday when Emily had been attending physical therapy at a clinic across town.

I knew because I had driven her there myself.

I looked up at Christopher.

“This isn't her signature.””

He shrugged.

“That's what she claims.””

“I'm not asking what she claims. I'm telling you I know her handwriting.””

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

“Daniel, the signature is part of a larger legal issue. You can't determine anything by looking at one page.””

I placed the document on the table.

“Then show me the other pages.””

Christopher crossed his arms.

“The original records are in my office.””

“Then we'll go there.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“No?””

“You can't simply walk into my office and take confidential documents.””

“I'm not asking to take anything. I'm asking to see evidence that my sister authorized a forty-eight-thousand-dollar transfer.””

Christopher shook his head.

“You're not qualified to interpret the trust.””

“Neither are you, apparently, if you need a forged signature to make your argument.””

His face darkened.

Vanessa moved between us.

"Please. Both of you. Can we stop fighting for five minutes?""

I turned toward her.

"You keep asking everyone to stop fighting, but you still haven't explained what you did.""

She looked at the floor.

"I signed the transfer authorization.""

The words came quietly.

I waited.

"Christopher told me it was temporary," she continued.

"He said the account could cover the boutique expenses and that the money would be replaced before anyone reviewed the books.""

"Did you know Emily's name was on the paperwork?""

"Not at first.""

"When did you find out?""

She closed her eyes.

"When Emily sent me a copy of the document.""

"And what did you do?""

"I asked Christopher to fix it.""

Christopher scoffed.

"That's not what happened.""

Vanessa spun toward him.

"You told me the signature was already on file!""

"Because it was.""

"Not on that document!""

I raised my hand.

"Enough. One at a time.""

They both fell silent.

I turned to Vanessa.

"Did you sign a document authorizing the transfer?""

"Yes.""

"Did Emily authorize it?""

"No.""

"Did you know that before you signed?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"I knew she hadn't personally signed that page.""

The distinction was so carefully worded that I immediately understood what she was trying to do.

"You knew the signature wasn't hers.""

She began to cry again.

"I thought Christopher had permission to handle the paperwork.""

"From whom?""

She didn't answer.

I turned to Christopher.

"Who authorized the transfer?""

He looked at me for several seconds.

Then he said, "Our grandmother's estate had outstanding expenses. We used the funds to cover them.""

"Forty-eight thousand dollars in boutique expenses?""

"Some of it.""

"How much?""

He looked away.

I felt a familiar coldness settle in my chest.

"Christopher, how much of that money went to Vanessa's business?""

"Thirty-eight thousand.""

"And the rest?""

"Administrative costs.""

"Whose administrative costs?""

He said nothing.

I took out my phone and called Marcus.

He answered immediately.

"Daniel?""

"Are you still with Emily?""

"Yes. She's home. Why?""

"Can you ask her whether she has copies of the trust documents?""

Marcus paused.

"She said she kept copies of everything she reviewed.""

"Can she send them to you?""

"I'll ask.""

I looked at Vanessa.

She had stopped crying.

Instead, she was watching my phone with an expression I couldn't read.

When I ended the call, she spoke.

"You're really going to do this?""

"Do what?""

"Bring everyone into our marriage.""

I stared at her.

"You brought a financial dispute into our wedding. You let your brother arrange to frighten my sister. You pushed her into a pool, and now you're asking me to keep quiet about a forged signature.""

Her lips trembled.

"I didn't forge it.""

"Then who did?""

She looked at Christopher.

He turned away.

That was all the answer I needed to know that they were still hiding something.

I walked toward the window.

Outside, the pool lights had switched on. The water glowed blue beneath the darkening sky, and the white flowers along the terrace looked almost silver.

Earlier that day, I had stood in that exact spot and believed I was watching the end of a terrible argument.

Now I understood that the argument had only exposed the surface of a much deeper problem.

My phone vibrated.

Marcus had sent a message.

Emily found the original file. She's sending me screenshots.

A second message followed.

She says there's something you need to see immediately.

I opened the attachment.

The first image showed a bank transfer authorization.

The second showed a trust amendment.

The third showed an email chain between Christopher and Vanessa.

I opened the email.

Christopher's message was dated three weeks before the wedding.

Emily has started asking questions. We need the signed authorization before the next review. If she refuses to cooperate, make sure she understands how much damage this could cause.

Vanessa's reply came six minutes later.

I'll talk to her at the wedding. She won't want to cause a scene in front of Daniel's family.

Christopher had answered:

Good. Keep her focused on the event. We need those copies before Monday.

I read the messages twice.

Then I turned toward Vanessa.

"Did you know about these emails?""

She looked at the screen.

Her face drained of color.

"Where did you get those?""

"Emily saved them.""

Christopher lunged toward the phone.

I stepped back.

"Don't.""

He stopped.

For the first time, he looked less like a confident businessman and more like a man who had lost control of a situation he thought he had managed perfectly.

"Those messages are being taken out of context," he said.

I laughed bitterly.

"What context makes this acceptable?""

"We were trying to protect the family.""

"By forging a signature?""

"No one forged anything.""

"Then why does the document have Emily's signature on a day she was somewhere else?""

Christopher's jaw tightened.

Vanessa whispered, "Christopher, tell him.""

He turned on her.

"Don't you dare put this all on me.""

"I'm not! You told me the paperwork was legitimate!""

"You signed the authorization!""

"Because you said it was temporary!""

"And you agreed to get the documents from Emily!""

Vanessa recoiled.

The room went silent.

I looked from one to the other.

"Get the documents from her how?""

Christopher closed his eyes briefly.

Vanessa began shaking her head.

"Daniel, please.""

I took a breath.

"No more. Tell me what happened.""

She looked at me with tears running down her cheeks.

"Christopher said Emily had the original trust amendment. He wanted it back before the bank reviewed the account.""

"Why?""

"Because the amendment changed who controlled the money.""

"To Emily?""

She nodded.

I looked at Christopher.

"Why would your grandmother give control of the trust to my sister?""

He stared at the floor.

Vanessa answered instead.

"Because Emily helped her when she was sick. She visited her every week. She organized her medication, drove her to appointments, and stayed with her when the rest of us were busy.""

Her voice cracked.

"Our grandmother trusted Emily more than she trusted either of us.""

I thought of Emily sitting beside her bed during family holidays, quietly listening while everyone else talked about work and money.

It sounded exactly like her.

Vanessa continued.

"Grandmother changed the trust shortly before she died. Christopher found out after the funeral. He was furious.""

Christopher slammed his fist against the table.

"Because she left a mess that nobody knew how to manage!""

"No," Vanessa said.

"Because she didn't leave it to you.""

His expression turned murderous.

I stepped between them again.

"That's enough.""

Christopher looked at me.

"You have no idea what you're stepping into.""

"Then explain it.""

He shook his head.

"Not here.""

"Where?""

"Somewhere without a crowd.""

I glanced toward the ballroom.

The reception was still going on, though the music had stopped. Guests were beginning to notice that the bride and groom were missing.

I no longer cared.

"You're going to tell me everything," I said.

"And then we're going to speak to an attorney.""

Christopher's face hardened.

"You'll regret that.""

I reached for the door.

"No. I regret marrying someone who thought hurting my sister was an acceptable way to solve a financial problem.""

Vanessa made a small, wounded sound.

I paused, but I didn't turn around.

Then Christopher spoke.

"If you involve an attorney, Emily won't just lose the inheritance. She could be accused of participating in the transfer.""

I turned slowly.

"Why?""

He smiled without warmth.

"Because her signature is on the authorization.""

I stared at the document.

Then I looked at him.

"You just admitted you knew the signature wasn't hers.""

"I admitted no such thing.""

"You said you knew she hadn't personally signed it.""

"I said I believed she had authorized the paperwork.""

Vanessa looked horrified.

"Christopher, you can't do that.""

He ignored her.

I understood what he was doing.

He was trying to make Emily afraid of the very documents that could expose him.

If she came forward, he would accuse her of wrongdoing.

If she stayed quiet, he might keep the money.

And if she surrendered the original amendment, he could continue pretending that the transfer had been legitimate.

I pulled out my phone.

"I'm calling an attorney now.""

Christopher stepped toward me.

"Daniel, don't be stupid.""

I met his eyes.

"The only stupid thing I did today was believe that marrying your sister meant I could trust her.""

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Christopher's face twisted.

Then my phone rang.

The caller ID showed Emily's name.

I answered immediately.

"Em?""

Her voice sounded weak but steady.

"Daniel, I found something else.""

"What?""

"The original trust amendment. The one Christopher said didn't exist.""

I looked at Christopher.

He had gone completely still.

Emily continued.

"And there's a letter attached to it. Grandma wrote it herself.""

My heart pounded.

"What does it say?""

Emily took a breath.

"She wrote that if anything happened to her before the transfer was completed, I was supposed to receive the entire trust. But that's not the part you need to hear.""

I gripped the phone.

"What part do I need to hear?""

Emily's voice dropped.

"The letter names the person Grandma believed would try to steal the money.""

I stared at Christopher.

May you like

He was already moving toward the door.

"Daniel," Emily whispered, "the name on the letter is Vanessa's.""
