Chapter 2: The Camera Saw Everything
Daniel followed his father's finger.
At first, he saw only the chandelier and the pale ceiling. Then his eyes settled on the small black dome mounted above the staircase.
The security camera.
He stared at it.
“What is that supposed to mean?”” Daniel asked.
Arthur used the edge of the console table to pull himself upright. He adjusted his glasses with unsteady fingers, then brushed a speck of dust from his dark green sleeve.
“That camera records the main hallway,” he said.
“Every movement. Every person who walks through this house.””
Daniel's anger faltered.
Tiana looked up, too.
“Grandpa's right,” she said.
“Dad had cameras installed after the jewelry theft last year. This hallway is covered.””
Mia's grip on Daniel's sleeve tightened.
“Daniel, don't listen to him.””
But Daniel was no longer looking at her.
He was staring at the little black lens.
“You mean it recorded what happened?””
Arthur held his gaze.
“Every second.””
The words seemed to change the temperature of the room.
Mia released Daniel's sleeve, then immediately grabbed it again.
“That's impossible,” she said.
Tiana turned toward her.
“Why would it be impossible?””
Mia's mouth opened, but no answer came.
Daniel looked from his wife to his father.
“You told me Dad grabbed you.””
“He did!””
“Then why are you afraid of the camera?””
“I'm not afraid of it!””
Her voice cracked on the last word.
Arthur said nothing.
He had spent decades learning that silence could reveal more than an argument ever would. He watched Mia's face as she tried to arrange it into the expression of a frightened wife. He watched Daniel's confidence begin to fracture.
Then Daniel took a step toward her.
“Mia, what did you do?””
She recoiled.
“Don't talk to me like that.””
“What did you do?””
“Daniel, please. You're upsetting me.””
He reached for his smartphone in the inside pocket of his navy suit.
“I'm going to check the footage.””
Mia moved so quickly that her heel slid on the marble.
“No!””
Everyone froze.
The word had come out too loudly, too urgently.
Daniel slowly lowered his hand from his pocket.
“What did you just say?””
Mia blinked rapidly.
“I mean—there's no reason to do that. Your father owns this house. Of course he'll have a camera that makes him look innocent.””
Tiana's eyebrows drew together.
“A camera doesn't make anyone look innocent. It records what happens.””
“You don't understand anything about marriage,” Mia snapped.
“And you don't understand anything about family if you think you can accuse my grandfather of something like this and expect me to stand quietly.””
Mia turned toward Daniel, her eyes filling again.
“Your sister has always hated me.””
Tiana let out a disbelieving laugh.
“This has nothing to do with whether I like you!””
“You've been waiting for an excuse to turn him against me.””
“Stop changing the subject!””
Daniel raised one hand between them.
“Both of you. Enough.””
He pulled out his phone and unlocked it.
Arthur watched his son's fingers tremble slightly over the screen.
“Daniel,” Arthur said quietly, “there is something you need to understand.””
Daniel didn't look up.
“What?””
“I am not asking you to believe me because I am your father. I am asking you to look at the evidence before you destroy someone you claim to love.””
Daniel's thumb stopped moving.
For a moment, the hallway was filled only by the faint hum of the air conditioning and Mia's uneven breathing.
Then Daniel looked up.
“Dad, if that video shows what you say it shows, I'll know.””
Arthur nodded.
“That is all I have ever asked of you.””
Mia stepped between them.
“Daniel, think about what you're doing. If you watch that video, you're choosing him over me.””
“No,” Daniel replied.
“I'm choosing to find out the truth.””
Her expression hardened.
“You promised me you would always protect me.””
“I did.””
“Then protect me now.””
Daniel glanced at her torn neckline.
“From what, Mia?””
She stared at him.
“From him!””
Arthur closed his eyes briefly.
Even now, even after being struck by his own son, he felt a terrible sadness for the man Daniel had become. Anger could be survived. Betrayal could be endured. But watching someone you loved abandon his judgment because another person knew which fears to exploit was a different kind of pain.
Tiana moved beside Arthur and gently took his arm.
“Come sit down, Grandpa.””
“I'm all right, sweetheart.””
“No, you're not.””
Her voice softened.
“You don't have to pretend with me.””
Arthur looked at her, and something in his face loosened. He allowed her to guide him toward a chair beside the console table.
She crouched in front of him.
“Does anything hurt?””
“My pride,” he answered, trying to smile.
Tiana's eyes filled.
“That's not funny.””
“No,” Arthur said.
“I suppose it isn't.””
She glanced at Daniel.
“Look at him. Just look at what you've done.””
Daniel's face tightened.
“I didn't know—”
“You didn't know what? That he deserved to be heard? That you should ask a question before you hit the man who raised you?””
Daniel looked down at the phone.
“I lost my temper.””
“You lost your judgment.””
Mia made a wounded sound.
“I'm standing right here, and everyone is acting like I'm the criminal.””
Arthur turned toward her.
“No one has decided anything yet, Mia. That's the point.””
She stared at him with open hostility for one unguarded second.
Then she lowered her chin and pressed a hand over her heart.
“I can't believe you would put me through this.””
Daniel moved closer to her.
“Mia, please. Just give me a minute.””
She caught his wrist.
“Remember what you told me last night.””
Daniel went still.
Tiana noticed.
“What did he tell you?””
Mia's eyes darted toward her.
“Nothing that concerns you.””
Daniel pulled his wrist free, gently but firmly.
“Stop.””
The single word seemed to surprise them both.
He turned toward the staircase and looked up at the camera again.
“Where does the footage go?”” he asked.
Arthur answered from his chair.
“To a recording unit in the study. The system keeps several weeks of footage unless someone manually deletes it.””
Daniel stared at him.
“Can it be deleted remotely?””
“Not without the administrator's credentials.””
“And who has those?””
“Me.””
Mia's shoulders relaxed almost imperceptibly.
Arthur noticed.
So did Tiana.
Daniel did not.
He walked toward the study entrance, then stopped and turned back.
“I'm going to get the recording.””
Mia followed him immediately.
“Daniel, wait.””
He kept walking.
She grabbed his arm.
“Please. Think about our future.””
He looked down at her hand.
“Our future depends on what happened in this hallway.””
Her lips parted.
For a second, she looked less like a frightened woman and more like someone watching a carefully built plan collapse.
Then she leaned close to him.
“You don't know what you're about to destroy.””
Daniel pulled his arm free.
“Then tell me.””
Mia said nothing.
He disappeared into the study.
Tiana remained beside Arthur, one hand resting on his shoulder. Neither of them spoke until the sound of drawers opening came from the next room.
Then Arthur leaned toward his granddaughter.
“Tiana, there's something about Mia you don't know.””
Tiana turned to him.
“What is it?””
Arthur glanced toward the study doorway.
“I didn't tell your brother because I wanted to give him time to see it for himself.””
“See what?””
Before Arthur could answer, Daniel returned carrying a small black recording unit.
His phone was in his other hand.
“I found it,” he said.
Mia backed away.
Daniel set the unit on the console table and connected it to his phone. A list of recorded dates appeared on the screen.
He selected the current day.
A loading symbol spun.
Mia stood motionless, her fingers clenched around the torn fabric of her dress.
Daniel's face was pale.
“Why are you shaking?”” he asked.
“Because you're humiliating me!””
“Then the video will clear everything up.””
The recording opened.
On the screen, the empty hallway appeared in sharp detail. The marble floor gleamed beneath the chandelier. The staircase stood at the back of the frame.
Arthur entered first, carrying a leather folder.
A few seconds later, Mia walked into view.
Daniel leaned closer.
Mia reached for his arm.
“Please,” she whispered.
“Don't watch it.””
He looked at her.
For the first time that afternoon, he seemed to recognize the fear in her eyes as something different from the fear she had claimed to feel for his father.
His thumb hovered over the play button.
Then the video began.
And the first thing Daniel saw was Mia looking directly at the camera.
She wasn't crying.
May you like
She wasn't frightened.
She was smiling.
