Chapter 5: The Secret Daniel Buried

Arthur had survived business failures, a devastating recession, and the loss of the woman he had loved for forty-six years.

He had learned that bad news rarely arrived alone.

But nothing prepared him for the look on his son's face when Mia mentioned the money.

"Daniel," Arthur said, "what is she talking about?""

Daniel glanced toward the staircase.

"Nothing.""

Mia laughed once.

"That's what you said when I asked where the money went.""

Daniel turned on her.

"Don't.""

"Why? Are you afraid they'll find out?""

"Shut your mouth, Mia.""

Arthur struck the marble floor once with his cane.

"Enough!""

Both of them fell silent.

Arthur looked at Daniel.

"I want to hear it from you.""

Daniel's shoulders slumped.

"It was a loan.""

"From me?""

"Yes.""

"When?""

"Last September.""

Arthur stared at him.

"I gave you money last September for the renovation of your property.""

"That wasn't the loan I'm talking about.""

Tiana stood beside her grandfather, watching her brother with growing concern.

"Daniel, what did you do?""

He pressed both hands against his face.

"I made a bad investment.""

Arthur waited.

Daniel lowered his hands.

"I invested in a company that was supposed to develop a chain of assisted-living communities. The founders promised guaranteed returns. I put in my savings, then borrowed more.""

"How much?"" Arthur asked.

Daniel looked at the floor.

"Two hundred and eighty thousand dollars.""

Tiana inhaled sharply.

Arthur didn't move.

"Did you tell me you needed that money for an investment?""

"No.""

"Then what did you tell me?""

Daniel's eyes filled.

"I said I needed it to cover a short-term cash-flow problem at the property.""

Arthur closed his eyes.

The money had come from a reserve he had built to cover unexpected expenses across several family properties. Daniel had asked for help, and Arthur had transferred the funds without hesitation.

He had never asked for detailed paperwork.

He had trusted his son.

"Did you intend to repay me?"" Arthur asked.

"Yes.""

"When?""

Daniel hesitated.

Arthur's face hardened.

"When, Daniel?""

"Within six months.""

"And what happened?""

"The company collapsed. The founders disappeared. The money was gone.""

Tiana stared at him.

"Why didn't you tell us?""

"Because I was ashamed!""

His voice echoed through the hallway.

"I thought I could recover it before anyone noticed. I sold investments. I took out a personal loan. I kept thinking the next opportunity would fix everything.""

Arthur's expression softened for a moment, then tightened again.

"How much do you owe now?""

Daniel swallowed.

"About three hundred and forty thousand, including the interest on the loans.""

Tiana looked at Mia.

"Did you know about this?""

Mia lifted her chin.

"I found out months ago.""

Daniel turned toward her.

"You promised you wouldn't tell anyone.""

"You promised you would fix it.""

"I was trying!""

"You were making it worse.""

Arthur's voice cut through their argument.

"How does any of this explain the forged documents?""

Mia folded her arms.

"Because Daniel was desperate. He needed money, and his father controls the company. I was trying to make sure Daniel received what he deserved before Arthur changed his mind about the inheritance.""

Daniel stared at her.

"You told me the investment was safe.""

"It was supposed to be.""

"You told me the company had already secured its funding!""

"It had secured some funding.""

"You told me you could get our money back!""

Mia raised her voice.

"And you believed me because you wanted to believe me!""

Daniel fell silent.

The words landed because they were true.

He had wanted the investment to succeed so badly that he had ignored every warning. When Mia suggested that they borrow against future earnings, he agreed. When she said they needed to conceal the losses until the investment recovered, he listened.

And when his father began asking questions about the company's financial records, Daniel had accused him of being controlling.

Now he could see how the pieces fit together.

Arthur's concern had never been about controlling his children's lives.

He had been trying to protect what he had spent decades building.

"Dad," Daniel whispered, "I am sorry.""

Arthur looked exhausted.

"I believe that you regret what happened. But regret doesn't return money to the people who earned it.""

"I know.""

"Do you?""

Arthur gestured toward the phone.

"Your wife entered my study and removed a legal document. She appears to have prepared a fraudulent transfer of my company. And you are standing here telling me you borrowed hundreds of thousands of dollars without permission.""

Daniel's eyes dropped.

Arthur continued.

"Do you understand why I cannot simply solve this for you?""

"Yes.""

"Because if I keep rescuing you without requiring honesty, I am not helping you. I am teaching you that consequences are something other people will absorb.""

Daniel nodded, tears running down his face.

Mia shook her head impatiently.

"This is ridiculous. Arthur, you have more money than you could spend in ten lifetimes. You could settle Daniel's debt tomorrow.""

Arthur turned toward her.

"And the employees whose money you took? Should I use their retirement savings to cover his losses as well?""

"I didn't say that.""

"You didn't have to.""

Mia's jaw tightened.

For a brief moment, the frightened wife disappeared again.

"Fine," she said.

"Let's talk about the money I moved. I can return it if Daniel's father agrees to release the funds we're entitled to.""

Daniel stared at her.

"Entitled to?""

"Yes.""

"What does that mean?""

Mia looked at Arthur.

"The company is worth millions. Daniel is your only son.""

Arthur's expression remained steady.

"Tiana is my daughter, too.""

"And you know she doesn't need the money as much as we do.""

Tiana's mouth fell open.

"You cannot be serious.""

Mia shrugged.

"You have a career. You have your own apartment. You have savings. Daniel and I are trying to build a future.""

"By stealing from my grandfather?""

"By securing what we have been promised!""

"No one promised you anything," Arthur said.

Mia's voice sharpened.

"You always make me beg for everything.""

Arthur stared at her.

"I helped you because I loved my son and wanted his marriage to succeed. I never imagined you would confuse generosity with ownership.""

For the first time, Mia had no immediate response.

Then she turned toward Daniel.

"Tell him what you told me last month.""

Daniel looked at her warily.

"What?""

"You said if the business transfer went through, we could sell part of the company and pay off your debts.""

Daniel shook his head.

"I said I was worried about the debts.""

"You said you'd do whatever it took to protect our future.""

"I never agreed to forge Dad's signature!""

"I didn't ask you to forge anything!""

"But you knew what you were doing!""

Mia's eyes flashed.

"Don't pretend you're innocent. You wanted the money just as much as I did.""

Daniel flinched.

Arthur watched them in silence.

The ugliest part of the argument was not that they were accusing each other. It was that each accusation revealed another truth.

Daniel had not forged his father's signature, but he had concealed his debts and allowed desperation to distort his judgment.

Mia had not created every problem in their marriage, but she had used those problems to justify actions she knew were wrong.

Neither could escape responsibility by pointing at the other.

Arthur slowly sat down.

"I want both of you to understand something. I will not transfer the company to anyone under pressure. I will not conceal missing funds. And I will not destroy evidence to protect this family's reputation.""

Mia laughed bitterly.

"So you're going to ruin us.""

"No," Arthur said.

"You have already made choices that may have consequences. I will not pretend those choices never happened.""

Daniel looked toward the study.

"What about the will?""

Arthur's face tightened.

"The original should be in the safe.""

"Should be?""

"I prepared the document last week. My attorney was supposed to review it tomorrow. No one should have had access to it.""

Mia's eyes flickered toward her handbag.

Tiana noticed.

"Where is the paper you took?""

Mia backed away.

"I don't have it.""

"Then why are you looking at your bag?""

"Because you are all staring at me!""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Mia. Put your bag on the table.""

"No.""

"Please.""

"I said no!""

He looked at her, his voice breaking.

"For once, can you just tell us the truth?""

Mia's eyes filled, but she didn't move.

Arthur rose with effort.

"No one is going to search her by force," he said.

"We will document what happened and let the appropriate professionals handle it.""

Mia gave a short, mocking laugh.

"Professionals? You're going to bring lawyers and police into your own house because of a piece of paper?""

"Because of the evidence," Arthur replied.

She looked toward Daniel, searching for the man who would once have defended her without hesitation.

He did not move.

Her expression changed from anger to fear.

Then she reached into her handbag.

Everyone watched as she pulled out a folded document.

Daniel's face tightened.

"Is that Dad's will?""

Mia held it against her chest.

"No.""

"Then what is it?""

She looked directly at Arthur.

"The reason I had to do what I did.""

Arthur extended his hand.

"Give it to me.""

Mia shook her head.

"You don't understand. If you see this, everything changes.""

"Everything has already changed.""

For a long moment, she stood motionless.

Then she unfolded the paper.

Daniel leaned closer.

At the top was Arthur's name.

Below it was a typed statement declaring that Arthur Mitchell had agreed to transfer his controlling interest in Mitchell Development to Daniel Mitchell, effective immediately.

Arthur stared at the document.

"This is not my signature.""

Daniel examined the bottom of the page.

The signature looked remarkably convincing.

But something else caught his attention.

A handwritten date appeared beside it.

September 14 of the previous year.

Daniel's stomach dropped.

He remembered that date.

It was the day he had visited his father's study to ask for the money he claimed he needed for the property.

And he remembered something else.

Mia had been waiting in the car.

She had known exactly when he went inside.

Daniel slowly raised his eyes toward his wife.

"You told me you had never been in Dad's study before today.""

Mia said nothing.

"September 14," he repeated.

"You were there that day, weren't you?""

Her silence was answer enough.

Arthur took a step closer.

"Where did you get this document?""

Mia folded it again.

"I told you. It's complicated.""

Daniel's voice turned cold.

"No. It's not complicated anymore. You forged a transfer document using the date I borrowed money from my father.""

Mia's face crumpled.

"Daniel, please.""

He shook his head.

"Did you plan this before I ever made the investment?""

She stared at him.

Then she whispered four words that destroyed the last defense he had left.

"I knew about the company.""

Daniel froze.

"What?""

Mia looked down at the paper.

"I knew the investment was failing before you put your money into it.""

The hallway fell silent.

Daniel's mouth opened, but no sound came out.

Arthur gripped his cane.

Tiana slowly stepped away from Mia.

May you like

And Daniel finally understood that his financial ruin might not have been an unfortunate mistake at all.

It might have been part of a plan.
