Chapter 6: The Investment Was Never Real
Daniel stared at Mia as though he were waiting for her to take the words back.
"You knew the investment was failing?""
Mia's fingers tightened around the folded document.
"I said I knew there were problems.""
"Before I invested?""
She looked away.
"Yes.""
The answer was barely audible.
Daniel took a step backward.
For months, he had blamed himself for the collapse of the investment. He had replayed every decision, every warning he ignored, every conversation in which he convinced himself that the next payment would solve everything.
He had believed he was the architect of his own disaster.
Now his wife was telling him she had known something he hadn't.
"How?"" he demanded.
Mia shook her head.
"It doesn't matter.""
"It matters to me!""
"Daniel, please. You're not thinking clearly.""
He laughed once, a harsh sound without humor.
"You've been telling me what to think for months.""
Arthur placed one hand on his son's shoulder.
"Sit down before you fall.""
Daniel gently moved away.
"No, Dad. I need to hear this.""
Arthur studied him, then nodded.
"Then ask your questions. But don't let anger make your decisions for you again.""
Daniel turned back to Mia.
"What was the name of the company?""
She hesitated.
"Meridian Equity Partners.""
Daniel's face went pale.
"Who introduced us to them?""
Mia didn't answer.
"Who?""
"You met one of their representatives at that charity dinner.""
"Who arranged the meeting?""
Mia looked toward Arthur.
"Your father knew people in the investment world.""
Arthur frowned.
"I have never had any dealings with Meridian Equity Partners.""
Daniel stared at her.
"You told me Dad's accountant had reviewed the company.""
"I said someone familiar with the industry had looked at it.""
"You said it was safe!""
"I believed it was safe at first!""
"Then why didn't you tell me when you learned it was failing?""
Mia's eyes filled.
"Because you had already invested.""
Daniel looked at her in disbelief.
"So you decided to let me lose everything?""
"I thought we could recover it!""
"How?""
She hesitated.
"By getting access to more capital.""
Arthur's expression darkened.
"From my company.""
Mia did not answer.
Tiana whispered, "You wanted to use Grandpa's business to cover Daniel's losses.""
Mia turned on her.
"I wanted to protect my husband!""
"By stealing his father's company?""
"I was trying to save our marriage!""
Daniel shook his head.
"You don't save a marriage by lying to the person you're married to.""
Mia's tears spilled over.
"And you don't save a marriage by hiding your debts and pretending everything is fine!""
The accusation struck home.
Daniel looked down.
For a moment, Mia seemed to regain confidence.
"You think you're innocent now because you saw a video? You borrowed money you couldn't repay. You lied to your father. You hid the losses from me until I had to find out for myself.""
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"You're right about that.""
Mia blinked.
He continued.
"I lied. I was ashamed. I made decisions I shouldn't have made, and I have to live with them.""
He raised his eyes.
"But I did not forge Dad's signature. I did not tear my own clothes and accuse him of assault. And I did not hit him because someone manipulated me into believing a lie.""
Mia's face hardened.
"You still hit him.""
Daniel swallowed.
"Yes. I did. Nothing you did makes that my father's fault. Nothing you did excuses what I chose to do.""
Arthur looked at his son for a long moment.
There was pain in his expression, but beneath it was something else: the faintest recognition that Daniel was finally beginning to distinguish responsibility from blame.
Mia seemed to sense it, too.
She stepped toward Daniel.
"Please. We can fix this.""
He remained still.
"We'll pay your father back. We'll find another investment. We'll start over.""
"With what money?""
She glanced at Arthur.
Daniel closed his eyes briefly.
"You're still waiting for him to rescue us.""
"I'm waiting for him to do what any father would do!""
Arthur's voice remained calm.
"A father can help his son without surrendering his judgment. I can help Daniel understand his debts. I can introduce him to legitimate financial advisers. I can support him while he takes responsibility.""
He paused.
"But I will not sign away my company to erase the consequences of his choices. And I will not allow anyone to use my employees' savings as a private emergency fund.""
Mia's expression turned bitter.
"Then you're leaving us with nothing.""
"No," Arthur said.
"I'm leaving you with the choices you made.""
She looked away.
Tiana moved toward the console table and picked up the broken button from Mia's dress. She placed it beside the folded document.
"These are the two things you thought would protect you," she said.
"A torn dress and a forged signature.""
Mia glared at her.
"You think you're so clever.""
"No. I think Grandpa deserves to feel safe in his own home.""
Mia's mouth tightened.
Arthur turned toward Daniel.
"Show me the investment records.""
Daniel retrieved his phone and opened the banking application. His hands trembled as he scrolled through the transfers.
"I sent the first payment to an account provided by Meridian. After that, they showed me statements indicating the investment was growing.""
"Did you ever receive money from them?"" Arthur asked.
"Only one small payment. They called it a dividend.""
"How much?""
"Eight thousand dollars.""
Arthur looked at the transaction history.
"That may have been used to convince you the investment was legitimate.""
Daniel nodded slowly.
"I thought so, too. But I kept hoping I was wrong.""
"Did you transfer money from my reserve account directly to Meridian?""
Daniel's expression changed.
"No.""
Arthur looked up.
"Are you certain?""
"I transferred it into my personal account first. Then I sent it to a different account. Mia handled some of the paperwork.""
Mia immediately spoke.
"I only helped organize the documents.""
Daniel turned toward her.
"Which account did you send the money to?""
"I don't remember.""
"You handled the paperwork!""
"I handled dozens of transactions!""
Daniel looked at the screen again.
"Wait.""
He enlarged a transaction record.
"The account number on the investment confirmation doesn't match the one on the original contract.""
Arthur leaned closer.
"What does that mean?""
Daniel's face tightened.
"It means the money may not have gone to Meridian at all.""
Tiana stared at him.
"Where did it go?""
Daniel tapped the account details.
The recipient was a limited liability company registered under a name he had never seen before.
*M. Vale Consulting LLC.*
Arthur looked at Mia.
"What is M. Vale Consulting?""
Mia went completely still.
Daniel read the name again.
"M. Vale. That's you, isn't it?""
She shook her head.
"It's just a business account.""
"Registered in your name?""
"I have several consulting accounts.""
"Did you receive my investment money?""
Mia's eyes filled.
"I didn't keep all of it.""
Daniel took a step toward her.
"How much did you keep?""
She looked at the floor.
"Some.""
"How much?""
"I was going to put it back!""
"HOW MUCH?""
Arthur raised his cane slightly.
"Daniel.""
His son stopped, breathing hard.
Arthur looked at Mia.
"Answer the question.""
She pressed the folded document against her chest.
"One hundred and twenty thousand dollars.""
Tiana covered her mouth.
Daniel stared at his wife.
The number seemed to settle over the hallway like a weight.
"You took one hundred and twenty thousand dollars from me?""
"It was supposed to be temporary.""
"You told me the investment had lost everything!""
"I was trying to protect you.""
"By taking my money?""
"By making sure we had something left!""
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
"Where is it now?""
Mia hesitated.
"Some of it went toward our expenses.""
"Which expenses?""
"Our mortgage. My business. The credit cards.""
"And the rest?""
She looked away.
Daniel stepped back.
"There's more.""
Mia said nothing.
He stared at her.
"What did you do with the rest of the money?""
She shook her head.
"I can't explain everything here.""
"Then explain it somewhere else. Explain it to a lawyer. Explain it to the police. But you are not going to stand in this hallway and tell me you did it all to protect me.""
Mia's expression hardened.
"You wouldn't even have this problem if your father had given you the company years ago.""
Arthur's eyes narrowed.
"There it is again. You believe my son is entitled to my business because he is my son.""
"He built his life around your promises!""
"I promised to help him become a responsible man. I never promised to hand him everything I own.""
Daniel looked at his father.
For the first time, he did not argue.
Instead, he pulled a chair away from the console table and sat down. He pressed his elbows against his knees and covered his face.
"I don't know how I let this happen.""
Arthur lowered himself into the chair beside him.
"You wanted to believe that success was just one decision away. So you ignored the warning signs.""
Daniel nodded.
"And I wanted to believe my wife would never lie to me.""
Arthur was silent for a moment.
"Love is not the same as refusing to see.""
Daniel looked up.
"I don't know if I can forgive her.""
"You don't have to decide that today.""
Across the hallway, Mia watched them with growing desperation.
She had expected anger. She had expected accusations. She had expected Daniel to demand that Arthur fix everything.
She had not expected her husband to stop defending her.
She moved toward the front entrance.
Tiana noticed.
"Where are you going?""
Mia kept walking.
"Home.""
"This is your home," Daniel said quietly.
She stopped.
He raised his head.
"At least, I thought it was.""
Mia turned, tears sliding down her cheeks.
"Daniel, please. I made mistakes. I was scared. I wanted us to have a better life.""
He looked at her.
"Did you ever love me?""
The question seemed to take the strength from her legs.
"Of course I did.""
"Then why did you let me believe I had destroyed our future when you were the one moving our money?""
She opened her mouth, then closed it again.
For a moment, her face showed something that might have been shame.
Then her eyes hardened.
"Because you would have stopped me.""
Daniel stared at her.
The answer was so simple that it silenced every other question.
She hadn't hidden the truth because she was protecting him.
She had hidden it because she knew he would refuse to help her continue.
Arthur rose slowly.
"I'm calling my attorney.""
Mia's head snapped toward him.
"No.""
"Yes.""
"You can't do that!""
"I can, and I will.""
Arthur reached for his phone.
Mia looked at Daniel one final time.
"If you let him make that call, you'll regret it.""
Daniel stood.
"I already regret what I did to him.""
He nodded toward Arthur.
"And I regret every time I believed you without asking a single question.""
Mia's face twisted.
She reached into her handbag, pulled out her own phone, and began typing rapidly.
Tiana frowned.
"Who are you messaging?""
Mia didn't answer.
Daniel moved closer.
"Mia, who are you calling?""
She lifted her eyes.
For the first time since the recording began, she looked genuinely frightened.
Then she spoke in a voice so quiet that Daniel almost missed it.
"The man who helped me set this up.""
Arthur froze.
"What man?""
Mia's phone vibrated.
She stared at the screen.
Then she turned it toward Daniel.
A message had arrived from an unsaved number.
*YOU WERE TOLD NOT TO LET THEM SEE THE ORIGINAL CONTRACT. GET OUT NOW.*
Daniel's stomach dropped.
He looked at his wife.
"You weren't working alone.""
Mia's fingers began to shake.
"No," she whispered.
Arthur stepped forward.
"Who is he?""
Mia stared at the message, then at the security camera above the staircase.
Finally, she looked back at Daniel.
"He's the person who introduced you to Meridian Equity Partners.""
Daniel's face went white.
"What's his name?""
Mia swallowed hard.
May you like
And when she answered, the name she gave them was the last name Daniel ever expected to hear.
"Your uncle, Robert Mitchell.""
