Chapter 8: The Signature That Could Destroy Them

Daniel enlarged the signature until the letters filled his phone screen.

He knew his own handwriting. He knew the way he crossed the letter t, the slight upward angle of his surname, and the way the final stroke always curved back beneath the previous letters.

The signature on the contract looked like his.

But it wasn't.

"Dad, look at the date.""

Arthur leaned closer.

"June third.""

Daniel shook his head.

"I was in Chicago on June third. I didn't come home until the fifth.""

Tiana frowned.

"Could someone have copied your signature from another document?""

"Of course. But I never signed this contract.""

Arthur studied the page.

"Who had access to your financial documents?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Several people. My accountant. My bank. Mia.""

Mia stood near the study door, her hands clasped in front of her.

"Don't look at me like that.""

Daniel raised his eyes.

"Your signature is on the same contract.""

"I told you Robert gave me the paperwork.""

"You signed it.""

"Because he said it was a confidentiality agreement.""

Arthur shook his head.

"That does not explain Daniel's signature.""

Mia looked toward the window.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she whispered, "Robert told me he could get a copy of Daniel's signature from the loan documents.""

Daniel went completely still.

"What loan documents?""

"The ones you signed when you borrowed money from your father.""

"I never signed a loan agreement.""

Arthur's expression changed.

"You didn't?""

Daniel shook his head.

"I asked you for help. You transferred the money. We never signed anything.""

Arthur turned toward the desk.

He opened a drawer and removed a thick folder containing the records of his personal transfers.

"Then someone obtained your signature from another source.""

He flipped through several pages.

Daniel watched his father's face tighten as he reached the back of the folder.

"What is it?"" Daniel asked.

Arthur removed a photocopy of a bank authorization form.

The signature at the bottom belonged to Daniel.

But the date was wrong.

Daniel took the page.

"I signed something like this when I opened my first business account.""

Arthur pointed to the bottom corner.

"Look at the account number.""

Daniel read it.

His face drained of color.

"This isn't my account.""

Tiana leaned over his shoulder.

"What do you mean?""

"Someone opened an account using my information.""

Arthur's expression hardened.

"When?""

Daniel examined the document.

Mia covered her mouth.

Arthur turned toward her.

"Did you know about this account?""

She shook her head quickly.

"No.""

Daniel studied her face.

For once, he couldn't tell whether she was lying.

He returned his attention to the document.

The bank authorization included a mailing address he recognized.

It was the address of the apartment building where he and Mia had lived before moving into their current home.

"Why would anyone use that address?"" Tiana asked.

Daniel looked at his wife.

"Because you handled the mail.""

Mia's eyes widened.

"You think I opened an account in your name?""

"I think someone used my information. And you just told us you signed a contract designed to transfer my father's company.""

"That doesn't prove I opened the account!""

"No," Daniel replied.

"It doesn't.""

He placed the document on the desk.

"And that's why we're going to get the bank records instead of arguing about what we think happened.""

Arthur looked at him with quiet approval.

"Good.""

Daniel glanced at his father.

"I should have done that months ago.""

"Yes," Arthur said.

"You should have.""

There was no cruelty in the answer.

That made Daniel lower his eyes.

Arthur reached for his phone and called his attorney, Evelyn Brooks.

She answered after two rings.

"Arthur? I was just preparing for tomorrow's meeting.""

"Evelyn, we have a serious problem. Someone has accessed my safe, removed documents, and prepared what appears to be a fraudulent transfer agreement.""

Her tone changed immediately.

"Is anyone in immediate danger?""

"No. But we have reason to believe my brother and daughter-in-law may be involved in a financial scheme targeting the company.""

There was a brief silence.

"Arthur, don't touch any more documents. Preserve the security footage, save the messages, and don't confront anyone else until I arrive.""

"Understood.""

"Is Daniel there?""

"Yes.""

"Put him on the phone.""

Daniel took the device.

"Hello, Ms. Brooks.""

"Daniel, I need you to answer a question honestly. Have you ever signed a document authorizing the transfer of your father's controlling interest?""

"No.""

"Have you ever agreed to sell the company to Northbridge Capital?""

"No.""

"Have you ever authorized anyone to use your signature on your behalf?""

"No.""

"All right. Do not delete anything from your phone. I am coming over with an independent digital examiner.""

Daniel handed the phone back to Arthur.

Mia's breathing had become shallow.

"You're really going to involve lawyers and investigators?""

Arthur looked at her.

"The decision was made when someone forged documents and removed them from my safe.""

She stepped into the study.

"Arthur, please. I can explain.""

"Then explain.""

Mia looked at Daniel.

"Can we speak privately?""

"No," Daniel replied.

"Please. Just five minutes.""

He shook his head.

"You've had months to tell me the truth.""

She swallowed.

"Robert said no one would get hurt.""

Arthur's face hardened.

"Who was going to get hurt, Mia?""

She looked down.

"He said the company would be sold, Daniel would receive enough money to clear his debts, and you would retain a comfortable income for the rest of your life.""

Arthur stared at her.

"You believed that?""

"He showed me financial projections.""

"Projections that promised a company worth tens of millions could be sold without my consent?""

Mia's voice rose.

"I didn't know how it worked!""

"You knew enough to enter my study, open my safe, and take my will.""

She recoiled.

Daniel stepped closer.

"What else did Robert tell you?""

Mia hesitated.

"He said the company would be better off under new ownership.""

"Why?""

"Because you were getting older. Because the business was becoming too dependent on you. Because one day you would be gone, and the family would fight over what remained.""

Arthur's face became unreadable.

Mia continued, speaking faster now.

"He said he was trying to prevent that. He said Northbridge would invest in the company, protect the employees, and give Daniel a secure future.""

"And what would Robert receive?"" Arthur asked.

"A commission.""

"How much?""

"Five million dollars.""

Tiana gasped.

Daniel stared at his wife.

"Five million?""

Mia nodded.

"That was the amount he negotiated.""

Arthur walked slowly to the window.

He looked out at the manicured lawn, the fountain, and the long driveway where his children had learned to ride bicycles.

He had spent forty years building Mitchell Development. He had watched crews pour foundations, watched steel rise into the sky, and watched empty lots become homes, offices, and shopping centers that employed thousands of people.

He had made mistakes.

He had lost money.

He had buried friends who worked beside him.

But he had never believed his own brother would try to dismantle the company through the people he loved most.

"Did Robert tell you what would happen to the employees?"" he asked.

Mia shook her head.

"He said Northbridge would take care of them.""

"Did you ask for a written guarantee?""

"No.""

"Did you consult an independent attorney?""

"No.""

"Did you tell Daniel?""

She lowered her head.

"No.""

Arthur turned away from the window.

"Then you weren't protecting anyone. You were gambling with the lives of people you didn't even bother to understand.""

Mia's eyes filled.

"I know.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Do you?""

She nodded desperately.

"I do. I swear I do.""

He took a long breath.

"I want to believe you.""

Her expression brightened slightly.

"But believing you is what brought us here.""

The brightness vanished.

Daniel continued.

"I don't know what happens to our marriage. I don't know whether the money can be recovered. And I don't know how to face the employees whose retirement funds were touched.""

He paused.

"But I do know that I'm not going to lie for you anymore.""

Mia looked as though he had struck her.

"Daniel, please.""

He turned away.

A car pulled into the driveway.

Arthur glanced at the window.

"Evelyn is here.""

Tiana moved toward the front entrance.

"I'll let her in.""

As she left, Daniel's phone vibrated again.

Another message from the unknown sender.

*CHECK THE SAFE'S BACK PANEL. THE ORIGINAL CONTRACT ISN'T THE ONLY THING ROBERT LEFT BEHIND.*

Daniel stared at the screen.

Arthur saw his expression.

"What now?""

Daniel showed him the message.

Arthur approached the safe.

"Don't touch the panel," he said.

"We'll wait for Evelyn.""

But before they could move away, a sharp metallic click came from inside the safe.

Both men froze.

Daniel looked at the open compartment.

"Did you hear that?""

Arthur nodded.

The sound came again.

A small mechanical ticking, faint but unmistakable.

Arthur stepped closer, then stopped himself.

"Everyone out of the study.""

Mia backed into the hallway.

Daniel followed his father toward the door.

They had barely reached the threshold when a tiny red light began blinking inside the safe.

Tiana returned with Evelyn Brooks, a tall woman in a charcoal suit carrying a leather briefcase.

She took one look at the blinking light and stopped.

"Arthur," she said, "what is that?""

"I don't know.""

Evelyn immediately directed everyone away from the desk.

"Nobody touches anything. I'll call the appropriate specialists.""

Daniel looked at his father.

For the first time that afternoon, fear had replaced his anger.

"Was that thing there before?""

Arthur shook his head.

"No.""

Evelyn took out her phone and began documenting the scene from a distance.

Then she looked at Mia.

"Mrs. Mitchell, I need to ask you something. Did you place any electronic device inside this safe?""

Mia's face went white.

"No.""

Evelyn held her gaze.

"Are you certain?""

Mia began to tremble.

"I didn't put anything in there.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Then who did?""

She stared at the blinking red light.

And finally, with tears running down her face, she whispered the answer.

"Robert.""

Evelyn's expression hardened.

"How do you know?""

Mia looked at Daniel.

"Because he told me that if Arthur ever discovered the contract, I had to make sure nobody opened the safe again.""

Arthur went still.

"Why?""

Mia's voice broke.

"Because he said the safe contained proof of what really happened to your first company.""

Arthur stared at her.

His first company had collapsed thirty years earlier.

The story he had told his children was that Robert's reckless borrowing had destroyed it.

May you like

But now Mia was standing in his hallway, terrified of a secret hidden inside a safe.

And Arthur realized that his brother might have been lying about the past for far longer than anyone had imagined.
