Chapter 7: The Person Behind the Door

Principal Harris stood in the archive doorway.

For a few seconds, nobody spoke.

The man who had promised Malik that the footage would be protected was now standing in the one place where we had found proof that he had helped hide the truth.

He looked older than he had the day before.

Tired.

Almost defeated.

"Ava," he said quietly.

"Malik.""

Officer Martinez stepped forward.

"Dr. Harris, why are you here?""

He looked at the screen behind us.

Then at the copied files in Malik's hand.

"I knew you would find it eventually.""

Malik's voice was cold.

"You knew?""

Harris closed his eyes briefly.

"I was hoping you wouldn't have to.""

"That doesn't make sense.""

"No," Harris said.

"It doesn't.""

He walked into the room slowly.

Nobody stopped him.

Nobody trusted him.

"You need to understand what happened.""

Malik laughed.

"We watched what happened.""

"You watched one part.""

"The part where you unplugged the camera?""

Harris looked down.

"I didn't unplug it because I wanted to hurt Marcus.""

"Then why?""

The silence lasted too long.

That was the answer.

Malik stepped closer.

"Why?""

Harris finally spoke.

"Because I was told to.""

The words hit harder than I expected.

"By who?"" I asked.

Harris looked toward the hallway.

"Daniel Rourke.""

Malik shook his head.

"You're blaming him now?""

"I'm telling you the truth.""

"The truth would have helped my brother two years ago.""

Harris didn't argue.

He accepted the anger.

That somehow made it worse.

"I made a choice," he said.

"A terrible one.""

"Why?""

He looked at the camera footage.

"Because I thought I was protecting the school.""

Malik stared at him.

"You protected yourself.""

Harris didn't respond.

Officer Martinez crossed her arms.

"Start from the beginning.""

And for the first time, Principal Harris stopped acting like a principal.

He looked like a man who had been carrying something too heavy for too long.

"Five years ago, the district had a major funding crisis. Test scores were dropping. Parents were threatening to leave. The superintendent created pressure on administrators to improve numbers.""

"By changing grades?"" I asked.

"Not officially.""

"But it happened.""

Harris nodded.

"Teachers were encouraged to find ways to keep students eligible. Some crossed lines.""

"Ms. Carter.""

"Yes.""

"And Rourke knew?""

"Everyone at that level knew.""

Malik's face hardened.

"So when Marcus reported her, you covered it up.""

Harris looked away.

"At first, I tried to handle it internally.""

"Meaning?""

"I asked Ms. Carter to correct the grades. I told Rourke there were concerns.""

"And?""

"He told me the district couldn't afford another scandal.""

Malik's hands clenched.

"So you destroyed my brother.""

"No.""

"You ruined his future.""

Harris's voice broke.

"I know.""

The room went quiet.

Then Malik asked the question he'd been carrying since the beginning.

"Why didn't you tell the truth?""

Harris looked at him.

"Because I was afraid.""

That answer seemed to make Malik angrier than any excuse.

"You were afraid?""

"Yes.""

"You were an adult.""

"I know.""

"You were the principal.""

"I know.""

"And my brother was sixteen.""

Harris had no answer.

Because there wasn't one.

The archive suddenly felt smaller.

All of us standing inside a room full of evidence.

A room full of things people hoped would disappear.

Officer Martinez looked at Harris.

"Why did you come here today?""

He reached into his coat and pulled out a flash drive.

"Because the district is preparing to blame Ms. Carter alone.""

Malik stared.

"What?""

"They're going to say she acted independently. They're going to claim the grade changes were her decisions. They're going to protect everyone above her.""

"Because that's what happened last time.""

Harris nodded.

"Yes.""

He handed the drive to Officer Martinez.

"What is it?""

"Emails. Internal communications. Messages between Rourke, Ms. Reed, and district officials.""

"Why give it to us now?""

Harris looked at Malik.

"Because I saw what happened to your brother. Then yesterday I watched the same thing happen again.""

He swallowed.

"I told myself Marcus's case was different. I told myself Malik's case would be handled properly.""

"And?""

"And I was wrong.""

Before anyone could respond, the archive alarm sounded.

A red light flashed above the door.

Officer Martinez looked at the control panel.

"Someone triggered an emergency lockdown.""

Harris immediately moved toward the exit.

"Everyone stay here.""

The door clicked.

Locked.

Then a message appeared on the archive computer.

*REMOTE ACCESS DETECTED*

Someone was trying to delete the files.

Officer Martinez rushed to the keyboard.

"They're wiping the server.""

Malik grabbed the copied drive.

"But we already have it.""

"Not everything.""

The screen showed folders disappearing one by one.

Then another file appeared.

A folder that hadn't been visible before.

*MAY 2025 — BOARD REVIEW*

Harris stared at it.

"I've never seen that.""

Officer Martinez opened it.

Inside was one document.

A scanned letter.

The sender was Marcus Thompson.

The recipient was Principal Harris.

The date was one day before Marcus's suspension.

Malik opened it.

The letter contained a warning.

I know the grade changes are being covered up. I know Ms. Carter is not acting alone. If anything happens to me at school, these people are responsible.

At the bottom was a handwritten note.

One sentence.

*I already gave a copy to someone I trust.*

Malik looked at Harris.

"Who?""

Harris shook his head.

"I don't know.""

The archive door suddenly unlocked.

Someone had overridden the system.

Officer Martinez grabbed the evidence drives.

"Move.""

We rushed into the hallway.

At the end of the corridor, a figure disappeared around the corner.

Malik ran after them.

I followed.

We reached the stairwell just in time to see a person leaving through the emergency exit.

They dropped something.

A folder.

Inside was a single photograph.

It showed Marcus Thompson entering the district office two years earlier.

On the back, someone had written:

*He was never supposed to leave with the evidence.*
