Chapter 8: The Witness Nobody Knew About

Marcus didn't believe us at first.

Not because he thought we were lying.

Because the truth was worse.

We met him that night at his apartment.

When Malik placed the photograph on the table, Marcus picked it up slowly.

His face changed.

"Where did you get this?""

"It was left in the archive hallway," Malik said.

Marcus turned it over.

His fingers trembled.

"I've seen this before.""

"What?""

He walked to a cabinet and pulled out an old notebook.

From between the pages, he removed a smaller photograph.

Same image.

Same day.

Same angle.

But the back had different handwriting.

Marcus placed both pictures side by side.

"The first one was mailed to me three months after I left Westbridge.""

"By who?"" I asked.

"No name.""

"What did it say?""

Marcus looked down.

"Nothing.""

That scared me more than if it had been a threat.

A blank message.

A reminder that someone was watching.

Malik sat beside him.

"You knew someone else had evidence.""

Marcus didn't answer immediately.

Then he nodded.

"I thought they were gone.""

"Who?""

"My friend.""

He opened the notebook.

Inside was a name.

*Lena Ortiz.*

I recognized it.

Everyone did.

Lena had been one of the smartest students at Westbridge. She had graduated early and left for college before Marcus's suspension became public.

"Why didn't you tell me?"" Malik asked.

"Because Lena disappeared after she gave me the information.""

"What information?""

Marcus looked at the notebook.

"She was Ms. Carter's student assistant.""

"She had access to grades?""

"Yes.""

"And cameras?""

Marcus nodded.

"She worked in the technology office after school.""

The room went silent.

"Where is she now?"" Malik asked.

"I don't know.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

"That's what scared me.""

He pulled out an old phone.

The battery was dead, but he connected it to a charger.

"I saved her last message.""

When the phone turned on, hundreds of notifications appeared.

Most were years old.

Marcus opened one conversation.

*Lena: I found something.*

*Marcus: What?*

*Lena: The grades weren't random. They were organized.*

*Marcus: By who?*

*Lena: I need proof before I say anything.*

The next message was sent two minutes later.

*Lena: If something happens, check the old robotics storage room.*

Then nothing.

No goodbye.

No explanation.

Just silence.

"We searched for her," Marcus said.

"Was she missing?""

"No. She left town. Changed her number.""

Malik stared at the phone.

"Why didn't you tell anyone?""

Marcus laughed quietly.

"Who would have believed me?""

The next morning, we went to the old robotics storage room.

It was behind the science building, a place nobody used anymore. Dust covered the shelves. Broken machines sat in boxes.

Malik found the locker labeled with Lena's old team number.

Inside was a small envelope.

No name.

Just three words.

*For Marcus.*

He opened it carefully.

Inside was a letter.

If you found this, it means they failed to erase everything.

Marcus read silently.

Then handed it to us.

I was wrong about one thing. I thought Ms. Carter was the person in charge. She wasn't.

The grades were being changed because someone higher needed certain students to remain eligible.

The camera incidents were used to remove students who threatened the system.

There were three students before Marcus.

My stomach dropped.

Three.

Not one.

Not two.

Three.

At the bottom of the page was another sentence.

The person who approved everything is someone everyone trusts.

Malik looked at Harris's name in the previous documents.

But then he stopped.

"No.""

"What?""

He pointed.

"The letter says everyone trusts.""

He turned the page over.

There was a second note.

A list of names.

Students.

Dates.

Incidents.

The same pattern repeated.

A complaint.

A camera failure.

A disciplinary action.

And beside each one was a signature.

Not Harris.

Not Rourke.

Someone else.

Someone who had reviewed every case.

Someone who had been present every time.

The final name on the list made all of us freeze.

*Daniel Rourke.*

Marcus exhaled.

"So he wasn't covering it up.""

"What do you mean?"" Malik asked.

"He was running it.""

The next morning, the district announced that Ms. Carter had resigned.

The headline spread everywhere.

*Teacher Removed After Student Safety Investigation*

People celebrated.

They thought the problem was solved.

But we knew better.

Because while everyone was looking at the person who had pushed Malik...

Nobody was looking at the person who had built the system allowing her to do it.

That afternoon, Principal Harris called Malik.

He sounded frightened.

Not guilty.

Frightened.

"Malik, you need to listen carefully.""

"What happened?""

"Rourke knows we have the archive footage.""

"How?""

"He knows everything.""

"Where are you?""

A pause.

Then Harris whispered:

"I found something in my office.""

"What?""

"I found a copy of every complaint I was told to ignore.""

My heart stopped.

"How many?""

May you like

His voice shook.

"Twenty-three.""
