Chapter 3: The Voice in the Recording

The recording was only thirty seconds long.

Thirty seconds.

That was all it took to destroy everything I thought I knew.

I replayed it five times in Maria's living room.

Each time, my hands shook more.

Vanessa's voice was unmistakable.

"Nobody will believe a baby.""

The words sounded calm.

Cold.

Like she was discussing a simple problem.

Not a child.

Not me.

Maria sat across from me, holding a cup of untouched tea.

"I tried to tell your father," she said.

"Why didn't he believe you?""

She looked down.

"Because Vanessa knew exactly how to control him.""

I stared at the recorder.

"What happened after I was arrested?""

Maria swallowed.

"She visited me.""

"Why?""

"To make sure I stayed quiet.""

A chill ran through me.

"What did she say?""

Maria looked at me.

"She said if I fought the charges, she would make sure nobody ever hired me again.""

I felt anger rising.

"Why didn't you tell the police about this?""

Maria laughed sadly.

"Who would believe me?""

The question hurt because I knew the answer.

Almost nobody.

My father had already chosen a side.

The police report had already been written.

The family story had already been created.

But there was one detail I couldn't ignore.

"Who helped her?""

Maria hesitated.

Then she said a name.

"Richard.""

I froze.

Richard Blake was my father's closest friend.

His business partner.

The man who had been at our house constantly when I was young.

"The police officer who handled my case knew him," Maria explained.

"He made sure the investigation focused only on me.""

I felt sick.

"So my father was manipulated?""

Maria nodded.

"Your father was angry. Scared. Vanessa used that.""

I drove home that night unable to think clearly.

For the first time in my life, I questioned everything.

My childhood.

My family.

My father's choices.

When I arrived home, Vanessa was waiting.

"You look upset.""

I stared at her.

"Did you know I found Maria?""

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

"Maria?""

"Yes.""

She laughed softly.

"Why would you go looking for that woman?""

"Because I found something.""

The room became silent.

I watched her face.

"She gave me a recording.""

Vanessa stopped breathing for a second.

Then she smiled.

"People can fake recordings.""

I stepped closer.

"Can they fake your voice?""

Her smile disappeared.

For the first time, I saw fear.

Real fear.

"What exactly did she give you?""

I didn't answer.

Because I realized something.

She wasn't asking because she was innocent.

She was asking because she needed to know how much I knew.

That night, I searched through old family records.

I found documents my father had kept.

And hidden inside one folder was something strange.

A police report.

But the date was wrong.

The investigation began before Maria was officially arrested.

Someone had already decided she was guilty.

The next morning, I went to see my father.

He was shocked when I showed him the documents.

"Lily, where did you get these?""

"Why does the report have mistakes?""

He looked uncomfortable.

"I don't understand.""

"Dad, did you ever question Vanessa?""

His face hardened.

"Why are you doing this?""

"Because someone lied.""

He stood up.

"After everything I've done for you?""

I felt tears forming.

"This isn't about what you did for me. It's about what you refused to see.""

He looked away.

That hurt more than anger.

Because it told me everything.

My father had spent twenty-seven years protecting a lie.

That evening, I received a message from an unknown number.

There was only one sentence.

Stop digging.

Then another message arrived.

A picture.

It was a photograph of Maria's house.

Taken that same day.

Someone was watching her.

May you like

And beneath the picture was a name.

Richard.
