Chapter 4: The Secret Behind the Perfect Family

I never imagined my own family would become a mystery I had to solve.

But once the truth started appearing, it refused to disappear.

I reported the threatening message to the police.

This time, I made sure everything was documented.

No assumptions.

No missing evidence.

No one-sided story.

The officer looked at the photo.

"You believe someone is threatening you?""

"I believe someone has been hiding a crime for twenty-seven years.""

The officer studied me.

"Do you have proof?""

I placed the recorder on the desk.

"I have a beginning.""

The investigation reopened.

And suddenly, people who had ignored Maria for decades started asking questions.

Richard disappeared.

His phone was turned off.

His office was empty.

But before he vanished, he made one mistake.

He contacted my father.

My father told me about the conversation.

"He said I needed to stop you.""

I looked at him.

"And did you?""

He looked ashamed.

"No.""

It was the first time my father admitted he was wrong.

"I should have listened to Maria.""

Those words were painful.

Because I had spent my entire life waiting for him to say them.

But apologies cannot erase damage.

They can only begin repairing it.

A week later, we found another recording.

This one was hidden in the old security system of our house.

The camera footage had been deleted.

But the audio remained.

And on that recording was the truth.

Vanessa had taken me outside.

She had carried me toward the pool.

She had placed me near the edge.

Then Maria arrived.

The recording captured everything.

Vanessa screaming.

Maria jumping in.

And Richard arriving minutes later.

The worst part?

Richard told Vanessa exactly what to do.

"Blame Maria.""

That was his voice.

Clear.

Cold.

I listened with my father beside me.

He covered his face.

"I ruined her life.""

Nobody answered.

Because it was true.

The woman who saved me lost everything.

Her job.

Her reputation.

Her home.

Her future.

Because powerful people decided her truth was inconvenient.

Vanessa was arrested two days later.

When officers arrived, she did not cry.

She did not pretend.

She looked at me and said:

"You have no idea what your father did to me.""

I stared at her.

"You tried to kill me.""

Her expression remained calm.

"I wanted a different life.""

I felt nothing but disgust.

"You had one.""

She smiled.

"No. I had you.""

That sentence stayed with me.

Because it revealed the truth.

I was never a child to her.

I was an obstacle.

A reminder of the family she married into.

The trial became national news.

Everyone wanted to know how a woman could hide such a secret for so long.

But I already knew.

Because people believe what they want to believe.

And Vanessa had given them the story they wanted.

The perfect stepmother.

The evil housekeeper.

The grieving father.

A simple story.

A false story.

But there was still one question.

Why did Richard help her?

The answer came from a hidden financial record.

And it changed everything.

Richard wasn't protecting Vanessa.

He was protecting himself.

Because twenty-seven years earlier, he and Vanessa had been hiding another secret.

A secret even my father didn't know.
