Chapter 12: The Choice That Destroyed Us All
Nobody moved after my father said those words.
“She was never supposed to be there.””
I looked at the frozen image on the screen.
The person standing beside the car.
The person who had changed everything.
My mother.
My father.
Mia.
All of us were staring at the same truth.
But none of us wanted to say it.
Finally, I did.
“Mom.””
She closed her eyes.
And that was all I needed.
The room went silent.
“Mom?””
She sat down.
“I can explain.””
I shook my head.
“How?””
My voice cracked.
“How do you explain this?””
Dad looked at her.
“Sarah.””
She started crying.
“I didn’t know what would happen.””
“What did you do?””
She looked at me.
“I wanted to help Mia.””
My stomach dropped.
Of course.
Again.
Mia.
Mom looked at my sister.
“She called me that night.””
Mia started crying.
“I didn’t know.””
Mom nodded.
“I know.””
She looked at me.
“Mia told me she had taken the car.””
I felt numb.
“What?””
“She was upset.””
Mom’s voice broke.
“She said she wanted to scare you.””
I looked at Mia.
She looked devastated.
“I was angry.””
“You wanted to scare me?””
Mia cried.
“I never wanted you hurt.””
“But I was.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
Mom continued.
“I went outside to find her.””
“And?””
“I found Rachel.””
The room was silent.
“She had the keys.””
Dad looked confused.
“Sarah…”
“I thought Rachel would drive her home.””
Mom covered her face.
“But then Emily got the message.””
My heart sank.
The fake emergency.
The lie.
“I told Mia to turn off her phone.””
Everyone looked at her.
“I thought if Emily didn’t come, nobody would get hurt.””
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“You knew I was coming.””
Mom cried.
“I didn’t know you would drive in the rain.””
The pain was overwhelming.
Not because she caused the accident.
Because she made a choice.
A choice that put me in danger.
Then hid it.
For years.
Dad stood.
“You tampered with the situation.””
“I was trying to fix it.””
“No.””
His voice shook.
“You made it worse.””
Mom looked at him.
“I was protecting our daughter.””
Dad stared.
“Which one?””
She broke.
And that question destroyed her.
Because she didn’t have an answer.
Mia whispered:
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at her.
“I don’t know if I can forgive you.””
She nodded.
“I understand.””
That was the first honest thing she had said.
Then Dad looked at the video again.
“There’s something missing.””
“What?””
He pointed.
“The recording cuts off before the person reaches the car.””
I frowned.
“So?””
“So someone edited it.””
My heart sank.
“Rachel?””
Dad shook his head.
“No.””
“Then who?””
He looked at the file information.
“The edit was made on this computer.””
The same computer.
The same house.
The same place where everything had been hidden.
Mom looked terrified.
“I didn’t do that.””
Dad believed her.
At least this time, he did.
Then Mia suddenly stood.
“Wait.””
She looked at the screen.
“The date.””
“What about it?””
She pointed.
“The video was edited after Rachel left.””
I stared.
“What?””
Mia stepped closer.
“That means Rachel couldn’t have done it.””
Everyone went quiet.
Because we had been blaming the wrong person.
Again.
Dad checked the file history.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“The person who edited this…”
He stopped.
“Dad?””
He turned the laptop around.
The name appeared.
The account.
The user.
My breath caught.
Because it wasn’t my mother.
It wasn’t Mia.
It wasn’t Rachel.
It was mine.
My account.
Someone had used my login.
I stared at the screen.
“That’s impossible.””
Dad looked at me.
“Emily…”
“I never touched this.””
Nobody spoke.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
This time, there was a name.
Not unknown.
Not hidden.
A name I recognized.
A name that made my entire body go cold.
*Rachel.*
The message said:
*I know who really edited the video. Meet me alone if you want the rest of the truth.*
I looked at my family.
At the secrets.
The lies.
The damage.
Then I looked back at the message.
Because for the first time…
May you like
I wasn’t sure if Rachel was my enemy.
Or the only person left who was telling me the truth.
