Chapter 2: The Envelope Nobody Wanted Me To See
Dad didn’t open the envelope immediately.
That was somehow worse.
If he had ripped it open, if he had yelled, if he had demanded answers, maybe the tension would have broken.
Instead, he stood there silently.
Holding the secret everyone else seemed to know except me.
My graduation dress was forgotten on the floor.
The scissors were forgotten.
Even Mia’s precious designer bag didn’t matter anymore.
All I could see was that envelope.
My name written across it.
“Dad,” I said quietly.
He looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
Those two words scared me more than anger would have.
“What is it?””
Nobody answered.
Mom’s face had gone completely pale.
“Mia,” Dad said slowly, “why was this in your bag?””
Mia swallowed.
“I don’t know.””
Dad stared at her.
“You don’t know?””
She looked away.
“I forgot it was there.””
“That’s not an answer.””
Her eyes flashed.
“You’re always taking Emily’s side.””
I almost laughed.
Because ten minutes earlier, I had been begging my mother to stop her from destroying my dress.
Now suddenly she was the victim.
Dad didn’t react.
“Open it.””
Mia shook her head.
“No.””
The room became silent.
Dad looked at her.
“Why not?””
“It’s private.””
He held up the envelope.
“With Emily’s name on it?””
Mia didn’t answer.
Mom finally spoke.
“David, maybe we should talk about this later.””
Dad turned toward her.
“No.””
His voice was calm.
“We should have talked about a lot of things earlier.””
That sentence made my mother look away.
I felt a knot forming in my stomach.
“Mom?””
She avoided my eyes.
That hurt more than anything.
Dad carefully opened the envelope.
Inside was a stack of papers.
He read the first page.
Then the second.
The longer he read, the more confused he looked.
“What is this?””
Nobody answered.
He handed the papers to me.
My hands shook as I took them.
The first line made my heart stop.
*University Scholarship Agreement.*
I looked up.
“What?””
Dad looked at Mia.
“Mia.””
She said nothing.
I kept reading.
The papers were about a scholarship I had applied for months ago.
A major scholarship.
One that would cover most of my final year expenses.
I remembered applying.
I remembered checking my email every day.
I remembered waiting.
And waiting.
But I never received an answer.
Because I assumed I didn’t get it.
Except now I was holding proof that someone had received the approval letter.
Someone had hidden it.
I looked at Mia.
“Why do you have this?””
She crossed her arms.
“I told you. I forgot.””
“No.””
My voice became stronger.
“You didn’t forget.””
She looked at me.
“You always think everyone is against you.””
I stared at her.
“You cut up my dress.””
“And now you’re accusing me of stealing?””
Dad interrupted.
“Enough.””
Mia went quiet.
He pointed at the papers.
“Explain.””
She looked at Mom.
That tiny movement told me everything.
They both knew.
Dad noticed too.
“Sarah.””
My mother closed her eyes.
“David…”
“No.””
His voice cracked slightly.
“Tell me why our daughter’s scholarship papers were hidden.””
I looked at Mom.
“Mom?””
She finally looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw guilt.
“We didn’t want to hurt you.””
The words felt impossible.
“You didn’t want to hurt me?””
I laughed once.
A broken sound.
“So you just let me believe I failed?””
Mom looked down.
“It wasn’t that simple.””
“What was it then?””
Nobody answered.
Dad looked furious.
“Sarah.””
My mother took a breath.
“Mia was struggling.””
I blinked.
“What?””
“She was having a hard time.””
I looked at my sister.
“Mia?””
She looked away.
Dad shook his head.
“So you hid Emily’s scholarship because Mia was struggling?””
Mom’s voice became defensive.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain it.””
The silence was unbearable.
Finally, Mia spoke.
“Because I needed it more.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“I needed the money.””
“That scholarship had my name on it.””
“I know.””
Her honesty shocked me.
“You knew?””
She shrugged.
“I needed help.””
My hands tightened around the papers.
“So you took mine?””
“I didn’t take it.””
“You hid it.””
She didn’t respond.
Dad looked devastated.
Not because of the scholarship.
Because of the realization that his own daughter had done this.
“How long?””
Mia looked confused.
“What?””
“How long have you been hiding things from Emily?””
Nobody moved.
Then Mia’s face changed.
Just slightly.
But I saw it.
Fear.
Dad saw it too.
“There’s more.””
It wasn’t a question.
It was a statement.
Mom immediately said, “David.””
But he ignored her.
He looked at Mia.
“What else?””
Mia stepped back.
“Nothing.””
Dad shook his head.
“You expect me to believe that?””
I looked at the envelope again.
My name.
My scholarship.
My future.
All hidden inside my sister’s bag.
And suddenly the dress didn’t feel like the beginning of the betrayal.
It felt like the final insult.
Dad picked up Mia’s bag.
He looked inside again.
Then he stopped.
“What is this?””
Mia froze.
Dad reached deeper into the bag.
And pulled out a small key.
A key I recognized.
My bedroom key.
My face went cold.
“Why do you have this?””
Mia didn’t answer.
Dad looked at me.
“Emily?””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know.””
Mom suddenly stood.
“David, give me that.””
But Dad moved away.
“No.””
He looked between all three of us.
Then he walked toward the hallway.
“Where does this key go?””
Nobody spoke.
But I already knew.
Because there was only one place in the house Mia would need my key for.
My locked drawer.
The drawer where I kept the things I valued most.
The drawer where I kept every letter, every memory, every piece of my life I didn’t want anyone touching.
Dad reached my room.
He inserted the key.
The lock clicked.
And when he opened the drawer…
Mia whispered something that made my blood run cold.
“Dad, don’t.””
May you like
Because whatever was inside that drawer…
She was terrified I would finally see it.
