Chapter 3: The Secret Contract
The graduation party ended before it even started.
Nobody wanted cake.
Nobody wanted pictures.
Everyone wanted answers.
My father drove us home in silence.
My mother sat beside me in the back seat, holding my hand like she was afraid I would disappear.
Victoria sat in the passenger seat.
For once, she had nothing to say.
When we arrived, I walked straight into the house.
The same house where I had spent years believing my mother abandoned me.
The same house where Victoria had smiled every time I asked about her.
I went upstairs.
My old room was exactly the same.
Almost.
The walls still had pictures from high school.
My medals still sat on the shelf.
But something felt different.
Like I was seeing a place that had been built on a lie.
My mother entered slowly.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at her.
“For what?””
“For every day you spent thinking I didn’t love you.””
That broke me again.
“I waited for you.””
“I know.””
“How could you know?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because I waited for you too.””
We sat on the floor like we used to.
And for the first time in years, my mother told me everything.
After the divorce, she had fought for custody.
She had won visitation.
But then Daniel and Victoria claimed she was unstable.
They filed motions.
They delayed hearings.
They created a story where she became the villain.
“I never stopped fighting,” she whispered.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because every time I tried, Victoria threatened to take legal action.””
I frowned.
“Threatened?””
My mother looked toward the door.
“She told me if I kept contacting you, she would make sure I never saw you again.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
Then footsteps approached.
Victoria.
She stood in the doorway.
“You’ve heard enough.””
I stood.
“No. I haven’t.””
Her expression hardened.
“Emma, you are an adult now. You need to stop letting her manipulate you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Manipulate me? You destroyed my mother’s ticket today.””
She looked annoyed.
“It was a mistake.””
“A mistake?””
“Yes.””
“You ripped it in half.””
Victoria stepped closer.
“Because I knew she wouldn’t belong there.””
My mother stood.
“Why?””
Victoria stared at her.
“Because you lost.””
Those two words were cruel.
And they revealed everything.
I grabbed my phone.
“Who sent me this picture?””
Victoria’s face changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Fear.
“You don’t need to know.””
“Yes, I do.””
She turned away.
“Emma, you’re emotional.””
“No. I’m finally awake.””
My father appeared behind Victoria.
“Enough.””
I looked at him.
“No. Not enough.””
His face fell.
“Your mother made mistakes too.””
I stared.
“What mistakes?””
Silence.
Then Victoria smiled slightly.
A dangerous smile.
“You really want the truth?””
My mother stiffened.
“Victoria, don’t.””
Victoria ignored her.
“Your mother didn’t lose custody because of me.””
My heart stopped.
“Then why?””
Victoria walked to the cabinet in the living room.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept this because I knew one day you would ask.””
She handed it to me.
Inside was a document.
A legal agreement.
My eyes scanned the page.
Then I saw a signature.
My mother’s.
My voice shook.
“Mom…”
She looked terrified.
“I can explain.””
I looked at the final line.
May you like
And my entire world changed.
Because the document said my mother had voluntarily given up custody of me.
