Chapter 9: The Truth My Mother Carried
I didn’t ask my mother immediately.
Because part of me didn’t want to hear another devastating truth.
I had spent my entire life discovering that the people I trusted had lied.
My father.
Victoria.
Everyone.
But my mother?
She was supposed to be the exception.
That night, she sat beside me on the porch.
The same porch where I used to wait for my father to come home.
“You deserve to know.””
I looked at her.
“What happened?””
She stared into the darkness.
“The night your grandmother died, she called me.””
My heart tightened.
“You talked to her?””
“Yes.””
“Then why weren’t you there?””
My mother closed her eyes.
“Because Victoria made sure I couldn’t get there.””
I waited.
“She sent me a message from your father’s phone.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“What did it say?””
“That your grandmother didn’t want to see me.””
I felt sick.
“She lied.””
“Yes.””
My mother’s voice broke.
“I was already fighting everyone. I was exhausted. I thought maybe your grandmother was angry with me too.””
“And then?””
“Then I found out the truth.””
“When?””
“Months later.””
I looked away.
“That’s why you never told me?””
She nodded.
“I thought if I told you everything, you would feel trapped between us.””
I whispered:
“I was already trapped.””
She cried silently.
“I know.””
The next morning, Rachel called.
“We found something.””
We rushed to her office.
She placed a flash drive on the desk.
“This came from your father’s old computer.””
My stomach tightened.
“What is it?””
“Emails.””
Between Victoria and Daniel.
I opened the first one.
Victoria wrote:
*She cannot know about the trust until she signs everything.*
The second:
*Once Evelyn is completely removed, Emma will have no reason to look back.*
I felt numb.
Rachel looked at me.
“There’s more.””
The final email.
The one that changed everything.
It was from my father.
To Victoria.
The subject line:
*I can’t do this anymore.*
The message was short.
*Emma deserves to know the truth.*
I stared.
My father had tried.
But then there was a reply.
From Victoria.
*If you tell her, you lose everything.*
I closed my eyes.
He had been afraid.
But fear didn’t erase the damage.
That evening, Daniel came to see us.
He looked different.
Smaller.
Older.
“I know you found the emails.””
I didn’t invite him inside.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
He looked down.
“Because I was weak.””
The honesty hurt.
“But I’m going to fix what I can.””
I crossed my arms.
“How?””
He handed me an envelope.
“What is this?””
“My statement.””
I opened it.
A confession.
Signed.
Everything he knew.
Everything Victoria did.
Everything he helped hide.
My mother looked at him.
“Why now?””
He swallowed.
“Because I saw Emma graduate.””
His eyes filled.
“And I realized I spent years protecting a lie instead of protecting my daughter.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Rachel called.
Urgently.
“Emma, you need to come here.””
“What happened?””
Her voice lowered.
“Victoria filed an emergency motion.””
My heart sank.
“She’s moving faster than we expected.””
“Why?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because she knows we have the evidence.””
I looked at my mother.
Rachel continued.
“She requested a hearing tomorrow.””
I frowned.
“For what?””
Her answer made my blood run cold.
“She wants to prove your mother is still unfit.””
I clenched my fists.
“She’s trying to destroy her again.””
Rachel was quiet.
Then:
“Emma, there’s one more thing.””
“What?””
“We found the person who helped Victoria.””
I held my breath.
“Who?””
Rachel said the name.
May you like
And my entire body went cold.
Because it was someone I never expected.
