Chapter 2: The Camera She Forgot About

Daniel stared at the small black camera above the staircase.

For several seconds, the only sound in the hallway was Mia’s uneven breathing.

Then he looked at his father.

“That thing records video?””

Arthur nodded.

“With sound, if the system is configured the way I remember.””

Daniel turned toward the console table, where a framed photograph showed him standing beside Arthur on his wedding day. He remembered the camera installation, the security company, and his father's insistence that every entrance and shared hallway be monitored.

He had dismissed the whole arrangement as another one of Arthur’s unnecessary precautions.

Now, it might be the only thing standing between his father and a devastating lie.

“Where is the recording stored?”” Daniel asked.

“In the security room,” Arthur replied.

Daniel pulled his smartphone from his pocket.

“I can access the system from here.””

Mia suddenly grabbed his sleeve.

“Daniel, don't.””

Everyone looked at her.

She released him almost immediately, but not before Tiana noticed how tightly her fingers had closed around the fabric.

Daniel frowned.

“Why not?””

Mia blinked rapidly.

“Because I don't want to relive it. You saw what happened. Why would you make me watch it again?””

“I didn't see what happened,” Daniel replied.

“I saw you on the floor.””

“You saw my dress!””

“And I saw Dad standing near you.””

“Exactly!””

“No,” Tiana interrupted.

“That isn't exactly anything.””

She knelt beside the console table and picked up the small red button Mia had dropped.

The button was intact.

Tiana turned it over between her fingers, studying the threads attached to its underside.

“Why would a button fall off when the neckline is torn?”” she asked.

Mia's face tightened.

“What kind of question is that?””

“A simple one.””

“Because he grabbed me!”” Mia snapped.

Arthur closed his eyes briefly.

There it was again.

The accusation repeated so many times that it began to sound like evidence.

Daniel looked between his wife and sister.

“Tiana, enough.””

“I'm not accusing anyone,” Tiana replied.

“I'm asking why you're so determined to punish Dad before you've checked the recording.””

“Because Mia is my wife!””

“And Arthur is your father!””

Daniel's mouth opened, but no answer came.

Arthur slowly lowered himself into a chair near the hallway window. The afternoon sun illuminated the silver strands in his beard, and he pressed his hands together to stop them from shaking.

“Tiana,” he said, “don't argue with your brother.””

She turned toward him.

“Daddy, he hit you.””

“I know.””

“You're bleeding nowhere, but you could have been seriously hurt.””

“I know, sweetheart.””

“And you're still protecting him?””

Arthur looked at Daniel.

“I'm not protecting him from the consequences of his actions. I'm giving him the chance to discover what those actions were based on.””

Daniel looked away.

The words reached him, but pride refused to let them settle.

He opened the security application on his phone and tapped through the available cameras.

Front entrance.

Driveway.

Back patio.

Hallway.

The screen displayed a timeline of recorded footage.

Daniel selected the current afternoon.

A loading symbol appeared.

Mia watched the screen over his shoulder.

Her breathing became faster.

“Maybe we shouldn't do this here,” she said.

Daniel did not look at her.

“Why?””

“Because this is a private family matter.””

Tiana let out a short, disbelieving laugh.

“You screamed that he attacked you in the middle of the house. You made it everyone's business.””

Mia turned sharply toward her.

“You have always hated me.””

“I barely speak to you.””

“Because you think you're better than me.””

“No. Because every time someone disagrees with you, you turn it into a personal attack.””

“Stop it!”” Daniel shouted.

His voice bounced off the marble walls.

Arthur flinched.

Daniel noticed.

For the first time, he seemed to recognize that his father was not simply standing in the way of his anger. The older man was frightened of him.

That realization made Daniel's stomach twist.

But Mia began crying again, and his attention immediately returned to her.

“Baby, sit down,” he murmured.

“You're shaking.””

“I'm fine.””

“You're not fine.””

She leaned into him.

“He made me feel unsafe in my own home.””

Arthur stared at her.

“This is my home, Mia.””

She went still.

Daniel looked up.

“Dad, not now.””

Arthur's voice remained quiet.

“I bought this house twenty-three years ago. I welcomed you both into it because I wanted my son to have a place where his family could grow. I've never asked either of you to pay me rent. I've never told Mia she wasn't welcome.””

Mia wiped her cheeks.

“No one said you did.””

“Then why are you telling my son that I attacked you?””

“I told him what happened!””

“No,” Tiana said.

“You told him what you wanted him to believe happened.””

Mia took a step backward.

Daniel raised a hand.

“That's enough!””

His phone vibrated.

The recording had loaded.

A preview appeared on the screen, showing the hallway from the camera's elevated angle. The time stamp matched the moment Mia had begun screaming.

Daniel stared at it.

His thumb hovered over the play button.

Mia's hand shot out and covered the screen.

“Please, Daniel.””

He slowly looked at her hand.

“What are you doing?””

She withdrew it.

“I just don't think this is necessary.””

“You said Dad attacked you.””

“He did!””

“Then the video will show that.””

Mia swallowed.

“Cameras don't show everything.””

Tiana's eyebrows rose.

“You were standing directly underneath one.””

“They can have blind spots!””

Daniel studied his wife.

The explanation was plausible enough to someone desperate to believe her. It was also the first time she had offered a reason the recording might not support her claim.

Arthur remained silent.

He had spent decades learning that when people were innocent, they generally wanted the facts examined. They might be frightened, embarrassed, or angry, but they did not usually beg others to avoid looking.

He watched Daniel's face as that same realization slowly began to surface.

“Play it,” Arthur said.

Daniel looked at him.

“Dad—”

“Play it, son.””

Mia's eyes filled with fresh tears.

“Daniel, please. I can't take this.””

He reached for her hand.

“You said you wanted me to protect you.””

“I do.””

“Then let me understand what I'm protecting you from.””

For the first time, she had no immediate answer.

Daniel pressed play.

The footage began with Arthur standing near the console table, holding a glass of water.

Mia entered the frame from the staircase.

She looked toward Arthur.

Then toward the ceiling camera.

Then back at Arthur.

Daniel leaned closer to the screen.

“What is she doing?”” Tiana whispered.

Nobody answered.

On the recording, Mia stepped into Arthur's path and began speaking. The camera had no visible audio indicator, but the security system's sound channel appeared to be active.

Daniel raised the volume.

Mia's recorded voice emerged from the phone speaker.

“Arthur, we need to talk about the house.””

Arthur's face grew pale.

He remembered that conversation.

Mia had asked him to transfer ownership of the property into Daniel's name. He had refused to sign anything without speaking to his attorney.

On the screen, Arthur shook his head.

Mia stepped closer.

Daniel watched his wife's expression change as she spoke.

The crying woman on the floor had not yet appeared.

The frightened face had not yet arrived.

Instead, the woman on the recording looked impatient.

Angry.

Almost cold.

Then Mia reached toward the front of her dress.

Daniel stopped breathing.

She gripped the neckline with both hands.

The fabric pulled apart.

A button popped free.

It bounced across the marble.

And the woman he had rushed downstairs to defend began preparing the lie that would destroy his family.

Daniel's thumb hovered over the screen.

He couldn't make himself press pause.

May you like

Because the next thing Mia did was look directly at the camera.

And smile.
