Chapter 3: The Moment His Wife Became a Stranger
Nobody spoke.
Daniel watched the recording again, his thumb frozen above the screen.
Mia's smile lasted less than a second, but it was unmistakable. There was no fear in it. No confusion. No sign of a woman who had just been attacked.
She had looked at the camera and smiled.
Then she had dropped to the floor and screamed.
Daniel lowered the phone.
“Mia.””
His voice sounded unfamiliar even to himself.
She stood beside him, clutching the torn fabric of her dress.
“Daniel, I can explain.””
He looked at her.
“Explain what?””
She opened her mouth, then closed it.
Tiana moved closer to Arthur, placing a protective hand on his shoulder.
“Keep watching,” she told Daniel.
“You haven't seen everything.””
Daniel pressed play again.
The recording continued.
Mia dropped to the marble, called for help, and pointed toward Arthur. Her performance was so convincing that Daniel felt sick watching it. She had widened her eyes, trembled her hands, and timed her screams to coincide with the sound of footsteps on the staircase.
She knew exactly when he would arrive.
She had counted on it.
Daniel watched himself rush downstairs, his face contorted with anger. He watched his father raise both hands. He watched himself cross the final few feet.
Then came the slap.
The image showed Arthur staggering backward and falling.
Daniel's fingers tightened around his phone until his knuckles turned pale.
On the screen, Tiana rushed toward their father while Mia remained on the floor, watching Daniel.
For one terrible instant, her expression looked almost pleased.
Daniel stopped the video.
The silence that followed was heavier than the slap itself.
Arthur sat in the chair beside the window, staring at his hands.
Tiana knelt beside him.
“Daddy, do you need anything?””
He shook his head.
“Just a moment, sweetheart.””
Daniel looked toward his father.
“Dad…”
Arthur did not respond.
“Dad, I'm sorry.””
The older man slowly raised his eyes.
“Are you sorry because you hit me,” he asked, “or because the camera saw you do it?””
Daniel recoiled.
“Because I hit you.””
“Would you be apologizing if there were no camera?””
“Yes.””
Arthur studied him.
“You were willing to believe the worst about me without asking a single question.””
Daniel lowered his head.
“I thought I was protecting my wife.””
“You were protecting an accusation.””
Mia stepped forward.
“Daniel, please. You're letting them turn you against me.””
He turned toward her so sharply that she stopped.
“Turn me against you?””
“You don't understand what it was like.””
“What was it like?””
“He intimidated me.””
“Dad was standing beside a table holding a glass of water!””
“He has a way of making people feel small.””
Arthur looked up.
“I have never threatened you.””
“You don't have to threaten someone to make them afraid!””
Tiana stood.
“Then why did you look at the camera and smile?””
Mia turned toward her.
“I didn't.””
Daniel lifted his phone.
“I have it right here.””
“That's not what it looked like.””
“Then tell me what it looked like.””
Mia glanced at the screen.
For a moment, she appeared to be searching for a version of the truth that could survive the footage.
Then her shoulders sagged.
“I was angry,” she admitted.
Daniel stared at her.
“Angry?””
“Yes.””
“Because Dad attacked you?””
“Because he wouldn't listen to me!””
Arthur's eyes narrowed.
“About the house?””
Mia looked away.
Daniel took a step toward her.
“What does the house have to do with any of this?””
She pressed her lips together.
Tiana answered before she could.
“She wanted him to sign over the property.””
Daniel looked at his father.
“Is that true?””
Arthur nodded slowly.
“She asked me to transfer the house into your name. I told her I would discuss the matter with my attorney before signing anything.””
Mia folded her arms.
“You make it sound so terrible.””
“Why would you need the house transferred?”” Daniel asked.
“We already live here.””
“Because it's ridiculous for a man your age to control everything!””
Arthur's face tightened, but his voice remained steady.
“This is my property. I decide what happens to it.””
“And what happens when you're gone?”” Mia demanded.
“Are we supposed to wait around while Tiana gets everything?””
Tiana stared at her.
“This has nothing to do with me.””
“Of course it does! You're his daughter. You think you deserve everything just because you were born first.””
“I was born eight years after Daniel.””
“That's not the point!””
Daniel raised his hand.
“Stop. Both of you.””
He turned back to Mia.
“Did you tear your dress because Dad refused to sign?””
Mia's eyes flashed.
“I tore my dress because I was upset!””
“And then you accused him of attacking you.””
“I didn't think you would hit him!””
The words escaped before she could stop them.
Everyone went still.
Daniel stared at her.
“What did you just say?””
Mia's face drained of color.
“I meant—I didn't know you would react that way.””
“No.”” Daniel shook his head.
“You said you didn't think I would hit him.””
“I was frightened!””
“You looked at the camera. You tore your dress. You waited for us to come downstairs.””
“I was angry!””
“And you knew I would believe you.””
Mia began to cry again.
This time, Daniel did not reach for her.
She stepped closer anyway.
“Daniel, we've been married for four years. You're really going to throw everything away over one terrible argument?””
He looked at her with disbelief.
“You tried to make me believe my father was a criminal.””
“I didn't think it through!””
“You watched me hit him!””
Her face crumpled.
“I was shocked.””
“You were smiling!””
“I wasn't!””
Daniel raised the phone again, but Tiana gently touched his arm.
“Daniel, don't let this become another shouting match. We need to know why she did it.””
Arthur slowly stood from the chair.
“I know why.””
Everyone turned toward him.
Arthur adjusted the sleeve of his dark green suit. His hands had stopped trembling, although the sadness in his eyes remained.
“She wanted the house,” he said.
“But I don't believe that was the only reason.””
Mia stared at him.
“Don't you dare.””
Arthur met her gaze.
“For weeks, you've been asking Daniel to change the ownership arrangements. You've asked about my will. You've asked whether I keep important documents in the study.””
Daniel looked at his wife.
“You told me you were helping Dad organize his estate.””
“I was trying to help!””
“By pressuring him to give you his house?””
Mia shook her head.
“You don't understand how hard it is to live here and have no control over anything.””
Arthur's expression hardened.
“You have never lacked a place at my table. You have never been denied a room, a meal, or a family celebration. But you have confused being welcomed into my home with having the right to take it from me.””
Mia wiped her face.
“Fine. You win.””
“No one is trying to win,” Tiana replied.
“We're trying to understand what you did.””
Mia turned toward Daniel.
“If you believe your father so much, then maybe you should go live with him forever.””
Daniel looked down at the phone.
For the first time, he noticed something he had missed while watching the recording.
The video showed Mia approaching Arthur with a folded sheet of paper before she tore her dress.
He rewound the footage.
Paused.
Zoomed in.
The paper was visible for only a moment, but its heading was clear enough to make out.
*PROPERTY TRANSFER AGREEMENT.*
Daniel's stomach tightened.
“Dad,” he said, “did you sign anything she gave you?””
“No.””
“Did she leave any documents in your study?””
Arthur hesitated.
“Yes. A folder was on my desk this morning. I assumed it was something she'd brought for Daniel.””
Daniel looked at Mia.
“What folder?””
She said nothing.
Arthur continued.
“I asked my attorney to review it before I touched it. But when I returned from lunch, the folder was gone.””
Tiana's eyes widened.
“Someone took it?””
“I thought Daniel had moved it.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I haven't been in your study today.””
All three of them turned toward Mia.
She stood motionless in the center of the hallway, her red dress torn, her face wet with tears.
Then her phone vibrated.
The sound was small, but everyone heard it.
Mia glanced at the screen.
Her expression changed so suddenly that Daniel knew the message mattered.
“Who is it?”” he asked.
“Nobody.””
She tried to put the phone away.
Daniel held out his hand.
“Let me see.””
“No.””
“Mia.””
She clutched the phone against her chest.
“It's private!””
Tiana stepped closer.
“Then why are you frightened?””
“I'm not frightened!””
But her voice cracked.
Daniel did not grab the phone. He simply stood with his hand extended, waiting for her to decide whether she would tell him the truth voluntarily.
Mia looked from Daniel to Arthur, then to Tiana.
Finally, she turned the screen toward herself and typed a hurried response.
Daniel caught only a glimpse of the message above it.
*Did you get him to sign?*
His hand dropped.
Arthur's face went still.
Tiana whispered, “Who sent that?””
Mia backed toward the staircase.
“No one you need to know.””
Daniel looked at the camera, then at the phone in her hand.
He had thought the recording would explain why his wife had lied.
Instead, it had revealed a question far more disturbing than the accusation itself.
Mia hadn't simply wanted his father punished.
Someone else had been waiting for the result.
And whoever that person was, they already knew about the property transfer.
Daniel took a slow breath.
“Mia,” he said, “who are you working with?””
She stared at him.
Then she turned and ran upstairs.
A bedroom door slammed.
Arthur remained silent for several seconds before looking at his son.
“Daniel,” he said quietly, “there is something about your mother's estate that I never told you.””
Daniel's face changed.
“What does Mom have to do with this?””
May you like
Arthur looked toward the staircase, where Mia had disappeared.
“Everything.””
