Chapter 4: The Secret Their Mother Took to Her Grave

“Everything.””

The word hung in the hallway long after Arthur spoke it.

Daniel stood beside the console table, his smartphone still displaying the frozen image of Mia looking directly into the security camera. Upstairs, a door had slammed hard enough to rattle the framed photographs on the wall.

But Daniel barely heard it.

His mother had been dead for eleven years.

What could she possibly have to do with a property transfer his wife had tried to force through that afternoon?

“Dad,” Daniel said slowly, “Mom died before Mia and I even met. What does her estate have to do with any of this?””

Arthur glanced toward the staircase.

“Not here.””

“Why not?””

“Because your wife may be listening.””

Daniel looked upward.

A moment earlier, he would have dismissed that possibility. Now, he found himself wondering how many conversations in this house Mia had listened to without his knowledge.

Tiana retrieved the broken button from the console table and placed it beside Arthur's glass of water.

“Daddy, we need to call your attorney,” she said.

“And Daniel needs to understand why somebody texted Mia about getting you to sign something.””

Arthur nodded.

“Her name is Evelyn Cole. She has handled my legal affairs for almost thirty years.””

Daniel unlocked his phone.

“Give me her number.””

“I have it.””

Arthur removed a small leather notebook from his jacket pocket and opened it to a page marked with a handwritten E.

His fingers paused briefly over the number.

Then he looked at his son.

“Before we call her, I need you to promise me something.””

“What?””

“You will listen to the entire story before deciding what to do next.””

Daniel swallowed.

“I already made one terrible decision today.””

“Yes,” Arthur said.

“You did.””

There was no anger in his voice.

Somehow, that made Daniel feel worse.

He nodded.

“I promise.””

Arthur dialed the number.

Evelyn answered on the third ring.

“Arthur? Is everything all right?””

“No, Evelyn. I'm afraid it isn't.””

A brief silence followed.

“Are you safe?””

“Yes. But I need you to come to the house. Bring the documents we discussed last month.””

“Which documents?””

Arthur glanced at Daniel.

“The original trust agreement. The sealed letter from my wife. And the file concerning the Bennett family property.””

On the other end of the line, Evelyn stopped speaking.

When she finally answered, her voice had changed.

“Arthur, did someone attempt to make you sign a transfer?””

Daniel looked sharply at his father.

Arthur closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

“Did you sign anything?””

“No.””

“Good. Do not sign anything, do not discard anything, and do not confront anyone else until I arrive.””

Daniel stepped closer to the phone.

“This is Daniel. Someone sent my wife a message asking whether she got Dad to sign. I need to know what's happening.””

Evelyn exhaled slowly.

“Daniel, I will explain what I can when I get there. But first, I need you to understand something. Your father has spent eleven years protecting a legal arrangement that was created to protect you and your sister.””

“Protect us from what?””

“I can't responsibly explain it over the telephone.””

“Why not?””

“Because I don't know who else might be listening.””

The call ended.

Daniel lowered the phone.

Tiana stared at him.

“Did you hear that?””

He nodded.

Their father walked toward the study.

“Come with me.””

The study occupied the back corner of the house, overlooking a manicured garden. Books lined the walls, and a heavy oak desk stood beneath a framed portrait of Daniel and Tiana's mother, Renee.

She had been beautiful in the quiet, effortless way that made strangers turn around when she entered a room.

In the portrait, she wore a cream-colored dress and a delicate gold necklace. One hand rested on Arthur's shoulder, while the other held a small leather-bound book.

Daniel remembered that necklace.

His mother had worn it almost every day.

He also remembered the night she died, when Arthur had returned from the hospital carrying a small box of her belongings.

For years, Daniel had believed that box contained everything she had left behind.

Now he wasn't so sure.

Arthur opened the bottom drawer of his desk and removed a thick envelope secured with a brass clasp.

He placed it on the desk without opening it.

“This came from your mother's attorney shortly before she died,” he explained.

“She asked me not to give it to either of you until I was certain you were ready to understand its contents.””

Daniel frowned.

“Ready? We were her children.””

“I know.””

“Then why keep it from us?””

Arthur looked toward the portrait.

“Because Renee believed that money could change the way people treated you. She had seen it happen in her own family. She wanted you to grow up knowing that your worth had nothing to do with what you might inherit.””

Tiana touched the envelope.

“Was there money?””

“There was more than money.””

Arthur opened the brass clasp.

Inside lay several documents, a faded photograph, and a handwritten letter bearing Renee's familiar signature.

Daniel reached for the letter.

Arthur gently stopped him.

“Your mother left specific instructions about when this should be opened.””

“When?””

“When someone attempted to transfer the house without my consent.””

Daniel stared at him.

“That's exactly what Mia tried to do.””

“Yes.””

Arthur handed him the letter.

Daniel unfolded it carefully.

The paper was yellowed at the edges, but the handwriting remained clear.

Arthur,

If you're reading this because someone has tried to take control of the house, then the time has come to tell our children the truth.

I pray that day never comes.

But if it does, remember that the house was never meant to be a prize for the person who demanded it most loudly.

It was meant to be a refuge.

The children must know that what I left them cannot be taken through pressure, deception, or a signature obtained under false pretenses.

And Daniel must learn that loving someone does not require him to surrender his judgment.

Daniel stopped reading.

His throat tightened.

The final sentence seemed to have been written specifically for him.

Tiana gently took the letter and continued.

The original documents are held by Evelyn Cole. She knows the identity of the person who helped me establish the trust. She also knows why the house must remain protected.

If anyone attempts to force a transfer, ask Evelyn to show you the blue file.

Everything you need to understand is inside it.

With all my love,

Mom.

Tiana lowered the letter.

“There's a blue file?””

Arthur nodded.

“Evelyn has it.””

Daniel stared at his mother's portrait.

“Dad, why didn't you tell us about this before?””

“Because there was never a reason to believe someone would try to take the house.””

“Was Mia the first person who asked you to sign it over?””

Arthur hesitated.

“No.””

Daniel's stomach tightened.

“Who else?””

Before Arthur could answer, footsteps sounded in the hallway.

Mia appeared at the study door, her red dress changed for a cream blouse and dark trousers. Her hair remained in its sleek bun, but the skin around her eyes was red from crying.

She looked from the envelope to the letter in Tiana's hand.

“What is that?””

Arthur closed the folder.

“Something that doesn't concern you.””

Mia's face hardened.

“Everything that happens in this house concerns me. I live here.””

“You live here because I welcomed you,” Arthur replied.

“That does not make you the owner.””

Daniel stepped between them.

“Mia, who sent you that message?””

She looked at him.

“I already told you. It's private.””

“Then why did they ask whether you got Dad to sign?””

“Because someone was helping me with the paperwork!””

“Who?””

She pressed her lips together.

Daniel took a breath.

“I saw the message, Mia. I know there was another person involved.””

“You're making me sound like some kind of criminal.””

“I am asking you a question.””

“And I am telling you that you have no right to interrogate me!””

Tiana rose from the desk.

“You fabricated an assault accusation against our father. You don't get to act offended because we're asking questions.””

Mia's eyes filled again.

“I made a mistake.””

“You didn't make one mistake,” Daniel said.

“You planned an entire lie.””

Mia looked at Arthur.

“You're enjoying this, aren't you? You finally have an excuse to humiliate me.””

Arthur shook his head.

“I have never wanted to humiliate you.””

“Then give me the house.””

The words came out so suddenly that even Mia seemed startled by them.

Daniel stared at his wife.

There it was.

Not an apology.

Not remorse.

The demand that had started everything.

Arthur slowly placed the envelope inside his desk drawer and locked it.

“No,” he said.

Mia's face twisted.

“Then don't expect me to keep pretending this family is normal.””

She turned and left.

Daniel watched her disappear down the hallway.

Then he looked at his father.

“Dad, you said someone else had asked you to transfer the property.””

Arthur nodded.

“Your mother had a younger brother named Samuel. He died several years ago, but before he passed, he made a request that I refused.””

“What request?””

Arthur looked toward the closed study door.

“He wanted the house placed under the control of his daughter.””

Tiana frowned.

“Mom had a cousin?””

“Your cousin,” Arthur corrected.

“Her name is Vanessa Reed.””

Daniel stared at him.

“Is Vanessa the person texting Mia?””

“I don't know,” Arthur replied.

“But Samuel's daughter knew about the trust, and she believed the house should eventually belong to her.””

Daniel felt a chill move down his spine.

He had met Vanessa only twice as a child.

He remembered a tall woman with a bright smile who had brought gifts to family gatherings and asked many questions about his mother's jewelry.

He had never known she was interested in the house.

Arthur picked up the envelope again.

“Evelyn will be here soon. When she arrives, we will find the blue file.””

He paused.

“And then we will learn whether your wife was acting alone.””

A car door slammed outside.

Someone had arrived.

But when Daniel looked through the study window, he didn't see Evelyn's familiar silver sedan.

He saw a black luxury SUV parked beside the front steps.

A woman in a tailored white suit stepped out, carrying a blue leather folder.

Arthur went pale.

“Vanessa,” he whispered.

The woman looked directly toward the study window.

Then she lifted her phone and called someone.

Daniel's phone vibrated almost immediately.

May you like

An unknown number had sent him a message.

*If your father shows you the blue file, your marriage will be the least of your problems.*
