Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew Their Mother's Secret

Daniel read the message twice.

Then he looked at the woman standing outside.

Vanessa Reed.

His mother's niece.

The relative he had barely thought about in years was now standing on his father's front steps, carrying a blue folder that might explain everything.

“Don't open the door,” Tiana said.

Daniel looked at her.

“She's family.””

“So was Mia supposed to be.””

Arthur rose from his chair.

“Let her in.””

Tiana turned toward him.

“Daddy, are you sure?””

“No. But refusing to speak to her won't make the truth disappear.””

Daniel slipped his phone into his pocket.

“I'm going to find out why she's here.””

He left the study and crossed the hallway.

The security camera remained fixed above him, its small black lens watching every step.

When he opened the front door, Vanessa smiled as if she had been invited to a family celebration.

“Daniel Bennett,” she said warmly.

“Look at you. All grown up.””

He didn't smile.

“Why are you here?””

Her expression barely changed.

“That's a lovely greeting.””

“You sent me a message.””

Vanessa tilted her head.

“I send many messages.””

“One telling me that my marriage would be the least of my problems if Dad showed me a blue file.””

Her smile disappeared.

Only briefly.

Then she stepped inside without waiting for permission.

“Your father has always been dramatic about his paperwork,” she said.

“I see he has finally decided to share the family's secrets.””

Daniel closed the door behind her.

“What do you know about the blue file?””

Vanessa looked toward the staircase.

“Is Arthur here?””

“Yes.””

“Then I'd rather speak to him first.””

“No. You'll speak to me.””

She turned slowly.

For the first time, Daniel noticed the resemblance between her and his mother. They had the same high cheekbones and the same habit of pressing their lips together when irritated.

But where Renee had used silence to avoid hurting people, Vanessa seemed to use it to make others uncomfortable.

“Your mother was a remarkable woman,” Vanessa said.

“Don't talk about my mother as if you knew her.””

Vanessa's eyebrows rose.

“I knew her very well.””

“You visited twice when I was a child.””

“And you remember those visits?””

“Not enough to trust you.””

The smile returned to Vanessa's face.

“Your father has taught you suspicion. That's unfortunate.””

“No. My father taught me to ask questions before trusting people who appear at the front door carrying documents they won't explain.””

Vanessa glanced at the blue folder beneath her arm.

Then she laughed softly.

“You're more like Renee than I expected.””

She walked toward the study.

Daniel followed.

Arthur was standing behind his desk when Vanessa entered. Tiana remained beside the window, her arms folded.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa placed the blue folder on the desk.

“Uncle Arthur,” she said, “we need to settle this before things get unnecessarily ugly.””

Arthur looked at the folder but did not touch it.

“What do you want, Vanessa?””

“The same thing my father wanted.””

“Your father wanted me to violate your aunt's wishes.””

“He wanted the family to receive what was rightfully theirs.””

Arthur's expression hardened.

“Your father was not a beneficiary of Renee's trust.””

“Because you convinced her to exclude him.””

“That is not true.””

Vanessa opened the folder.

Inside were copies of property records, a family tree, and several documents bearing the seal of a law office.

“My father spent years trying to correct what happened,” she said.

“He believed Renee had been manipulated into placing everything under your control.””

Tiana stepped closer.

“Everything? What does that mean?””

Vanessa ignored her.

She turned to Daniel.

“Did your father tell you how much this property is worth?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

“Nearly four million dollars, depending on the current market.””

Daniel glanced at Arthur.

The house was large, but he had never thought of it in those terms.

Vanessa tapped a document.

“And that's only the house. The trust includes investment accounts, commercial property, and other assets your mother accumulated before she married Arthur.””

Tiana stared at her.

“Mom owned commercial property?””

“Several units in downtown Atlanta. She inherited them from her grandmother and expanded the portfolio before she died.””

Daniel felt as though the floor had shifted beneath him.

His mother had worked as a school administrator for most of his childhood. He remembered her grading papers at the kitchen table and bringing home grocery bags after late meetings.

He had never imagined she owned a property portfolio.

“Why didn't Dad tell us?”” he asked.

Vanessa's eyes softened with practiced sympathy.

“Because he benefited from keeping you ignorant.””

Arthur slammed his palm against the desk.

“Enough!””

The room fell silent.

“I have spent eleven years honoring your aunt's instructions,” Arthur said.

“I paid the taxes, maintained the properties, and protected the assets for the children. Every decision was reviewed by Evelyn Cole. Nothing was hidden for my personal benefit.””

Vanessa leaned forward.

“Then show them the original trust.””

Arthur held her gaze.

“Evelyn is bringing it.””

“Of course she is. Evelyn has always been your favorite attorney.””

“She was Renee's attorney first.””

“And you think that makes her impartial?””

“It makes her familiar with the truth.””

Vanessa straightened.

“Your truth.””

She pulled a sheet from the folder and slid it toward Daniel.

“Read this.””

Daniel picked it up.

It was a property transfer agreement.

The document described the Bennett family home and proposed transferring ownership to a new holding company.

At the bottom, a signature line bore Arthur's name.

Except Arthur had not signed it.

Daniel looked at the date.

The document had been prepared three weeks earlier.

“Where did you get this?””

Vanessa's smile vanished.

“Mia told me your father was considering the transfer.””

“Mia told you?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Last month.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Have you been talking to my wife about my father's property?””

Vanessa did not answer immediately.

Then she said, “Mia contacted me because she was concerned about your father's intentions. She wanted to protect your future.””

“By fabricating an assault?””

Vanessa blinked.

“What?””

Daniel showed her the recording on his phone.

He played the moment Mia tore her dress, smiled at the camera, and collapsed onto the floor.

Vanessa watched without moving.

When the video ended, she handed the phone back.

“That was foolish.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Foolish?””

“Yes. She should never have done something so easily disproved.””

Tiana took a step forward.

“You knew?””

“I knew she wanted the property transferred. I did not tell her to tear her dress.””

“But you knew she was planning something.””

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

“I knew she was desperate.””

Daniel felt a wave of disgust.

“You were helping her.””

“I was advising her.””

“On how to take my father's house?””

“On how to secure her family's future.””

“Our future doesn't belong to you!””

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

“You think this is about a house? Your mother left behind a fortune. Your father has controlled it for more than a decade. You and Tiana have been living under the assumption that one day everything will be handed to you.””

“Isn't that what Mom wanted?””

Vanessa gave a bitter laugh.

“Your mother wanted justice.””

Arthur slowly walked around the desk.

“No. She wanted peace.””

He reached into the drawer and removed the envelope containing Renee's letter.

“She wrote this before she died. She specifically instructed that the trust remain intact and that neither child be pressured into making decisions about the inheritance.””

Vanessa's eyes fixed on the envelope.

For the first time since entering the room, she looked genuinely unsettled.

“Where did you get that?””

“From my desk.””

“That's impossible.””

Arthur frowned.

“Why?””

Vanessa stepped toward him.

“Because that letter was supposed to have been destroyed.””

Silence.

Daniel looked at his father.

Tiana's mouth fell open.

Arthur slowly lowered the envelope.

“What did you say?””

Vanessa seemed to realize her mistake.

“I meant the copy.””

“No,” Arthur said.

“You said the letter was supposed to have been destroyed.””

Vanessa backed away from the desk.

“I don't know what you're talking about.””

Arthur's voice grew quieter.

“Who told you about Renee's letter?””

She grabbed the blue folder.

“This conversation is over.””

Daniel moved toward the door, blocking her path.

“Not yet.””

“Move.””

“Who told you about the letter?””

Vanessa stared at him.

Then she looked at Arthur.

“You should have kept your children out of this.””

Arthur's face went pale.

“Who told you?””

Vanessa's composure finally cracked.

“My father had a copy,” she snapped.

“He told me everything before he died.””

Daniel felt his pulse hammering in his ears.

“But Uncle Samuel died years ago,” Tiana said.

“Yes.””

“And Mom's letter was written eleven years ago.””

Vanessa's lips pressed together.

Arthur looked at her with growing alarm.

“If your father had a copy of the letter, then someone gave it to him before Renee died.””

Vanessa said nothing.

“Who?”” Daniel demanded.

She lifted the folder against her chest.

Then her gaze shifted toward the study door.

“Ask Evelyn.””

Arthur froze.

“What does Evelyn have to do with this?””

Vanessa's eyes glistened, but there was no sorrow in them.

“Everything you think you know about your wife's trust is based on documents prepared by one woman. And if you believe she has told you the whole truth, you're more naïve than I thought.””

A car pulled into the driveway.

Through the window, Daniel saw a silver sedan stop behind Vanessa's SUV.

Evelyn Cole had arrived.

Vanessa stepped away from the door.

“Good,” she said.

“Now we can finally stop pretending.””

Evelyn entered the study carrying a black briefcase.

She took one look at Vanessa, then at the blue folder on Arthur's desk.

Her face changed.

“Vanessa,” she said quietly.

“You shouldn't be here.””

Vanessa smiled.

“And you shouldn't have kept the original.””

Evelyn set her briefcase down.

Daniel looked from one woman to the other.

“Somebody tell me what is happening.””

Evelyn opened the briefcase.

She removed a thick blue file and placed it beside Vanessa's folder.

Then she looked directly at Daniel.

“Your mother left this trust to protect you and Tiana. But before I can explain the documents, you need to know something about the night she died.””

Daniel's chest tightened.

“What about it?””

Evelyn glanced at Vanessa.

May you like

Then she spoke the words that made Arthur grip the edge of his desk.

“Your mother did not die believing her estate was safe.””
