Chapter 4: The Sister Who Knew Too Much

I read Rachel’s message five times.
Then ten.
The words stayed the same.
*Emma, don’t trust Daniel. He’s lying about everything.*
My sister.
My husband.
Two people who had known me longer than almost anyone else.
And somehow, I was standing between them, unable to tell which direction was safe.
Daniel watched my face carefully.
“What did she say?””
I didn’t answer.
“Emma.””
I locked my phone.
“Nothing.””
His expression changed immediately.
Not anger.
Suspicion.
“You’re lying.””
The accusation cut deeper because it sounded exactly like something I would have said three months ago.
I put the phone on the counter.
“She told me not to trust you.””
Daniel became completely still.
For a few seconds, the only sound in the kitchen was the refrigerator humming.
Then he nodded.
“Of course she did.””
I narrowed my eyes.
“What does that mean?””
“It means Rachel knows she’s been exposed.””
“Exposed?””
“Yes.””
I grabbed the printed email from the table.
“Daniel, you keep saying things like you already know everything.””
“Because I spent three months trying to understand what was happening.””
“By spying on me?””
His face tightened.
“By protecting myself.””
“Protecting yourself?””
“Yes.””
I laughed bitterly.
“That’s convenient.””
Daniel looked hurt.
“Do you really think I wanted to see those pictures?””
I looked away.
“No.””
“Do you think I wanted to know my wife was meeting another man?””
“No.””
“Then stop acting like I’m the person who created this situation.””
The room went quiet.
Because he was right.
But something still bothered me.
Something didn't fit.
I looked back at the photograph of Isaiah and Rachel.
“How long have they known each other?””
Daniel shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
“You investigated him for three months and you don’t know?””
“I found out they had contact. I didn’t know the entire story.””
“Why not?””
His jaw tightened.
“Because every time I got close to the truth, someone covered their tracks.””
“Someone?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Daniel looked at me.
“That’s what I’m trying to find out.””
My phone buzzed again.
This time, I didn't want to look.
But I did.
Another message from Rachel.
*Please meet me alone. Don’t tell Daniel.*
I stared at the screen.
Daniel noticed.
“What did she say?””
I hesitated.
That was all he needed.
“Emma.””
“She wants to meet.””
“When?””
“Tonight.””
“Where?””
“She didn’t say.””
Daniel walked closer.
“Don’t go.””
I looked up.
“Why?””
“Because she’s scared.””
“So?””
“So scared people make desperate choices.””
I folded my arms.
“You think my sister is dangerous?””
“I think someone is using her.””
“You don’t know that.””
“No.””
He looked at the photograph.
“But I know she lied to both of us.””
That sentence bothered me.
Both of us.
Not just me.
I looked at Daniel.
“What exactly did Rachel lie to you about?””
He didn't answer immediately.
And that pause told me there was more.
“Daniel.””
He sighed.
“When I first started looking into Isaiah, I contacted Rachel.””
My stomach dropped.
“You did what?””
“I needed answers.””
“You went to my sister?””
“Yes.””
“And what happened?””
“She told me she barely knew him.””
I stared at him.
“But she was meeting him.””
“Yes.””
“When did you find that out?””
“Two weeks later.””
“How?””
“I followed a lead.””
I shook my head.
“You followed people?””
“I needed to know what was real.””
“You sound like a stranger.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Maybe that’s because I became one after I found out.””
The words landed quietly.
Almost worse than yelling.
I turned away.
Because I didn’t know what to say.
Daniel had every reason to hate me.
But somehow, I was still looking for reasons to distrust him.
Maybe because trusting him meant facing what I had done.
Maybe because anger was easier than guilt.
A few minutes later, Daniel left.
Not because we were finished.
Because neither of us knew how to continue.
I watched his car disappear.
Again.
Only this time, I didn't feel relief.
I felt fear.
An hour later, I was sitting on the edge of my bed when someone knocked on the door.
My heart jumped.
I grabbed my phone.
“Who is it?””
“It’s me.””
Rachel.
I opened the door.
My sister stood there looking nothing like the confident woman I knew.
Her hair was messy.
Her eyes were red.
She looked like she hadn't slept.
“Emma.””
I stepped back.
“Come in.””
She walked inside slowly.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then she whispered:
“You talked to Daniel.””
It wasn't a question.
I crossed my arms.
“You knew I would.””
Rachel closed her eyes.
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“You finding out the truth.””
My chest tightened.
“The truth about what?””
She looked at me.
And for the first time in my life, my sister looked afraid of me.
“About Isaiah.””
I waited.
“About Daniel.””
I waited.
“About the person who started all of this.””
“Who?””
Rachel looked toward the windows.
Then lowered her voice.
“You have to leave this house.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Tonight.””
“Rachel, what are you talking about?””
“I’m serious.””
“Why?””
She stepped closer.
“Because Daniel isn’t trying to save you.””
My heart sank.
“Then what is he doing?””
Rachel looked at me.
“He’s trying to destroy someone.””
“Who?””
She hesitated.
Then said:
“You.””
I stared at her.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I expect you to listen.””
“Why should I?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because I know what I did.””
The confession stopped me.
“What does that mean?””
Rachel sat down.
Her hands were shaking.
“I made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
She looked at the floor.
“I introduced Isaiah to you.””
I felt cold.
“What?””
“I knew him before you did.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Before he moved next door.””
My mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Rachel continued.
“I thought he could help you.””
“Help me?””
“You were miserable.””
The words hurt.
Because part of me knew they were true.
“Rachel…”
“I saw how lonely you were.””
“So you sent me someone?””
“No.””
She shook her head quickly.
“No, that’s not what happened.””
“Then explain.””
Rachel looked at me.
“I thought Isaiah was a good person.””
“Was?””
Her face changed.
“I don’t know anymore.””
A terrible silence filled the room.
“What happened between you two?””
Rachel looked away.
“That’s complicated.””
“Try me.””
She took a deep breath.
“Isaiah didn’t just become your neighbor by accident.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He chose that house.””
The room suddenly felt colder.
“Why?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
“Why did he choose my house?””
Her lips trembled.
“Because of Daniel.””
My heartbeat slowed.
“What does Daniel have to do with Isaiah?””
Rachel looked at me.
And then she said something that made every piece of the puzzle shift.
“Isaiah didn’t come into your life because he wanted you.””
I swallowed.
“Then why?””
Rachel whispered:
“He came because he wanted revenge on your husband.””
I stepped back.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“You’re lying.””
“I wish I was.””
My phone suddenly buzzed.
Both of us looked down.
A message.
From Isaiah.
I opened it.
Only one sentence appeared.
*Emma, don’t listen to Rachel. She’s the reason Daniel knows everything.*
I looked up slowly.
Rachel saw my face.
“What did he say?””
I couldn't answer.
Because suddenly I realized something terrifying.
Everyone around me had a story.
Everyone had a secret.
Everyone claimed they were protecting me.
But someone was lying.
And the worst part was…
I was starting to believe they all were.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice came through.
A voice I had never heard before.
But the words made my blood freeze.
“Emma, if you want to know who Isaiah really is…”
I gripped the phone tighter.
“Meet me tomorrow.””
“Who is this?””
The man paused.
Then said:
“The person who knows why your husband was never the real target.””
The call ended.
May you like
And for the first time, I wondered if Daniel’s betrayal had been the beginning of the story…
not the end.
