Chapter 8: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

I couldn't move.

I couldn't speak.

I could only stare.

The man standing behind me held a worn black folder in one hand.

The other hand rested at his side.

Calm.

Still.

Like he had been standing there for much longer than a few seconds.

Like he had been listening to everything.

My eyes moved over his face.

The lines around his eyes.

The gray in his hair.

The familiar shape of his jaw.

A face my memories had kept alive even though reality had taken him away years ago.

“No…”

The word escaped my mouth.

The man looked at me.

His eyes softened.

“Emma.””

My knees almost gave out.

Because I knew that voice.

I had heard it when I was a child.

I had heard it when he tucked me into bed.

I had heard it when he promised me monsters weren’t real.

But he was the one person who was never supposed to speak again.

“Dad?””

The entire room went silent.

Rachel covered her mouth.

Isaiah stepped back.

Michael looked like he had seen a ghost.

Because he had.

My father.

Thomas.

The man I buried fifteen years ago.

The man whose funeral I attended.

The man whose death certificate existed somewhere in a government office.

The man who was standing three feet away from me.

Alive.

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice broke.

“No, this isn’t possible.””

My father looked at me.

“I know.””

“Who are you?””

The question sounded ridiculous.

But I needed to hear it.

I needed someone to tell me I wasn't losing my mind.

His eyes filled with pain.

“Emma…”

“No.””

I stepped backward.

“You died.””

“I know.””

“I saw the coffin.””

He looked down.

“I know.””

“I watched them bury you.””

His face tightened.

“I know.””

The anger came suddenly.

Hot.

Sharp.

“You know?””

I laughed.

“You know?””

My voice grew louder.

“Do you know what that did to me?””

Nobody moved.

“Do you know what it was like losing you?””

My father looked away.

And for the first time, I saw shame.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

I froze.

There it was again.

That word.

Protecting.

I hated it.

Everyone used it like it excused everything.

“You all say that.””

My voice shook.

“You all say you were protecting me.””

I pointed at the folder.

“But nobody protected me from the truth.””

My father lowered his head.

“You’re right.””

That surprised me.

I expected an explanation.

A defense.

Not an apology.

“I was wrong.””

The room stayed silent.

Michael finally spoke.

“Thomas.””

My father looked at him.

“You knew?””

Michael’s face hardened.

“I knew you survived.””

My eyes moved between them.

“You knew?””

Michael looked guilty.

“I suspected.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“No, you don’t get to say that.””

I turned toward everyone.

“Everyone knew something.””

My voice cracked.

“Everyone.””

Rachel started crying.

“Emma…”

“No.””

I looked at her.

“You lied to me.””

“I was scared.””

“My whole life changed because you were scared.””

She looked down.

Then my father spoke.

“She wasn’t the only one.””

I turned.

“What does that mean?””

He held up the folder.

“This is why.””

I stared at it.

“The file.””

He nodded.

“The file your mother thought was destroyed.””

I frowned.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

I felt confused.

“My mother knew?””

My father looked at the floor.

“Your mother knew more than anyone.””

A cold feeling spread through me.

My mother had died when I was nine.

She was another memory.

Another person I could never ask questions.

“What was in this file?””

My father looked at Michael.

Then Isaiah.

Then Rachel.

Finally, me.

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“Of what happened fifteen years ago.””

I crossed my arms.

“You’re going to have to be more specific.””

He took a breath.

“My business did not fail because of fraud.””

Michael looked down.

“My father and Daniel’s father worked together.””

My heart stopped.

Daniel’s father.

The name from the phone call.

“The two of them were involved in something bigger than business.””

“What?””

“Money laundering. False accounts. Illegal transfers.””

The words sounded impossible.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“And Daniel knew?””

My father looked at me.

“That is the question.””

My stomach tightened.

Because suddenly every conversation with Daniel looked different.

Every secret.

Every silence.

Every unexplained decision.

My father opened the folder.

“There was one person who helped uncover everything.””

“Who?””

He looked at Michael.

“Me.””

Michael nodded.

“I found the evidence.””

“And then?””

“My father’s business partners tried to silence us.””

I swallowed.

“You faked your death?””

My father’s eyes filled with regret.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt.

Even though I understood.

Even though there were reasons.

“You let me believe you were dead.””

“I had no choice.””

“There is always a choice.””

He looked at me.

“I had a choice between losing you emotionally or losing you completely.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t know that.””

“Yes, I do.””

“How?””

His silence lasted too long.

Then he said:

“Because someone tried to kill you too.””

The room went cold.

“What?””

Rachel looked away.

Isaiah closed his eyes.

Michael clenched his jaw.

My father continued.

“The night I disappeared, I discovered they knew about you.””

“About me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because you were my weakness.””

The words hurt.

Because they made sense.

My father had always protected me.

But now I wondered if that protection had created a target.

“Who tried to hurt me?””

My father looked at the folder.

“The same person who has been manipulating everyone around you.””

A terrible silence.

I already knew.

But I needed him to say it.

“Who?””

My father looked at Daniel’s photograph on the table.

Then said:

“Claire.””

I felt my breath catch.

Daniel’s assistant.

The woman who sent flowers.

The woman who knew every detail of his schedule.

The woman who had access to everything.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

My father looked at me.

“Because Claire is not who Daniel thinks she is.””

My phone buzzed.

Everyone looked.

A message.

From Daniel.

*Emma, answer me. Please.*

I stared at it.

My father noticed.

“Does he know I’m here?””

“No.””

“Good.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because if Daniel knows you found me…”

He stopped.

“What?””

My father’s face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“He will come here.””

“Why?””

My father looked at the folder.

“Because this file proves he is not innocent.””

The words crushed something inside me.

“No.””

My father stepped closer.

“Emma.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Daniel loved me.””

My father’s expression softened.

“I believe he does.””

That surprised me.

“Then why?””

“Because people can love someone and still hide terrible things.””

I looked away.

Because I knew that better than anyone.

My father placed the folder on the table.

“There is something you need to see.””

He opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Names.

Dates.

Then one photograph.

One that made my blood run cold.

A younger Daniel.

Standing beside Claire.

But not at work.

Not recently.

Fifteen years ago.

The same year my father disappeared.

I picked up the photo.

“Why are they together?””

Nobody answered.

Then my father said:

“Because Claire has been in Daniel’s life much longer than you know.””

My fingers tightened around the picture.

The man I married.

The man I thought entered my life after my father died.

The man I thought saved me.

Maybe he had been there long before.

Maybe he had always known.

My phone rang.

Daniel.

Again.

This time, I answered.

“Daniel.””

His voice came immediately.

“Emma.””

I looked at my father.

At the folder.

At the photograph.

“I know about Claire.””

Silence.

A long, terrifying silence.

Then Daniel whispered:

“Who told you?””

My heart sank.

Because he didn't deny it.

He didn't ask what I meant.

He knew exactly what I was talking about.

“Daniel…”

“Emma, listen to me.””

“No.””

“Please.””

“Were you involved?””

Another silence.

Then a quiet answer.

One I was not prepared for.

“Yes.””

The room spun.

My grip loosened.

The phone almost fell.

Daniel continued:

“But not the way you think.””

I couldn't speak.

He took a breath.

“Emma, there is one thing nobody has told you.””

“What?””

His voice dropped.

“The person who destroyed your family…”

A pause.

“The person who caused your father’s disappearance…”

I waited.

May you like

Then Daniel said:

“was your mother.””
