The Man at the Door / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3: The Secret She Buried

For a few seconds, I couldn’t understand what Tasha had just said.

The words were simple.

The meaning wasn’t.

“I knew who you were.””

I stared at her.

The woman who had slept beside me for six years.

The woman who knew how I took my coffee.

The woman who knew I hated hospitals because of what happened to my father.

The woman who knew every scar I carried.

Now she was telling me she had known something about me before we ever met.

Something I didn’t know she knew.

“What does that mean?””

My voice sounded different.

Colder.

Tasha looked down.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

I stepped away from the bed.

“I’m done filling in the blanks for you.””

The room stayed silent.

“I need you to say the words.””

Her breathing became shaky.

“I knew about your family.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“My family?””

She nodded.

“Before we met, I knew your last name.””

I looked at Robert and Denise.

They looked confused.

Good.

For once, someone else was confused too.

“How?””

Tasha swallowed.

“Because of my father.””

I turned toward Robert.

He looked at her.

“Tasha?””

She wiped her tears.

“My father knew Marcus’s father.””

The room changed again.

Another secret.

Another door opening.

Another part of my life that apparently everyone had access to except me.

I looked at Robert.

“You knew my father?””

Robert slowly stood.

“Marcus, listen—”

“No.””

My voice cut through the room.

“Not anymore.””

I pointed between him and Tasha.

“How many people have been having conversations about my life without me?””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew the answer.

Too many.

Robert looked away.

That hurt.

Because Robert had been like a second father to me.

When my own father died, Robert was the man who taught me how to fix things around the house.

The man who helped me move into my first apartment.

The man who gave a speech at my wedding about how lucky he was to call me family.

And now he was standing there holding information that could destroy everything.

I looked at Tasha.

“Start from the beginning.””

She closed her eyes.

“I met your father when I was younger.””

“When?””

“Before you and I met.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She nodded.

“About ten years ago.””

I felt my chest tighten.

Ten years.

Before our relationship.

Before our marriage.

Before I even knew her name.

“What did he have to do with you?””

Tasha hesitated.

Then Ethan spoke.

“He knew her father.””

I looked at him.

“I didn’t ask you.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

For the first time, Ethan looked less like an enemy.

He looked like someone who was also trapped inside a story he didn’t control.

But I wasn’t ready to trust him.

Not even close.

I looked back at Tasha.

“Why?””

She stared at the blanket.

“Because of a lawsuit.””

The words surprised me.

“What lawsuit?””

“My father’s company.””

I frowned.

“What does that have to do with my father?””

Tasha’s face tightened.

“My father worked with him.””

I waited.

She continued.

“They were business partners.””

The room became quiet.

I had spent years believing my father was just a hardworking man who owned a small construction company.

A man who came home tired every night.

A man who never talked about money.

A man who died with more questions than answers.

But apparently, there was another story.

“You knew about this?””

I looked at Robert.

He nodded slowly.

“Your father never wanted you involved.””

“Why?””

Robert sighed.

“Because he was trying to protect you.””

I almost laughed.

Everyone kept using that word.

Protect.

Protect.

Protect.

But nobody ever asked what I wanted protecting from.

“What happened?””

Robert looked at the floor.

“Your father found out someone was stealing money from the company.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Tasha.

Then Ethan.

Then Robert.

And I realized something.

The silence wasn’t confusion.

It was fear.

“Who?””

Robert finally spoke.

“Your uncle.””

I froze.

“My uncle?””

My father’s younger brother.

The man who had attended every holiday.

The man who had hugged me when my father died.

The man who told me my father’s death was just bad luck.

I shook my head.

“No.””

Robert nodded sadly.

“Yes.””

The room felt smaller.

I looked at Tasha.

“What does this have to do with you?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because my father helped him.””

The sentence hung there.

I didn’t speak.

I couldn’t.

“My father knew what was happening,” she whispered.

“And?””

“And he stayed quiet.””

I looked at her.

“So your family betrayed mine.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“And then you married me?””

Her tears fell.

“Yes.””

I stepped back.

The pain wasn’t sharp anymore.

It was numb.

Like my body was trying to protect itself.

“You knew.””

“I knew your last name.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

She looked at me.

“I knew after we started dating.””

The room went silent.

My heart started beating faster.

“After?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

She looked away.

“The first month we were together.””

The first month.

I remembered that time.

I remembered taking her to the lake where my father used to take me fishing.

I remembered telling her things I had never told anyone.

I remembered saying:

“I feel like I can trust you.””

The memory made me feel sick.

“You had one month to tell me.””

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

“That you would hate me.””

I stared at her.

“You thought lying was better?””

“No.””

“But you did it anyway.””

She cried harder.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“When?””

“Every time I tried, something happened.””

I laughed quietly.

“Something happened?””

I looked around the hospital room.

“Like what?””

She didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Like you got pregnant?””

Her face changed.

And immediately, I knew.

There was something else.

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“Marcus…”

“What?””

I pointed at the DNA test.

“You already lied about Ethan.””

My voice dropped.

“What else?””

Tasha looked at Ethan.

He looked away.

That told me enough.

“You both know.””

Ethan sighed.

“I didn’t know everything.””

“But you knew something.””

“Yes.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

He hesitated.

Then reached into his pocket.

Not another envelope.

Another phone.

He unlocked it and held it out.

“I received this three months ago.””

I didn’t take it.

“What is it?””

“A message.””

“From who?””

Ethan looked at Tasha.

Then at me.

“Your uncle.””

The room went completely still.

I took the phone.

The message was short.

One sentence.

One sentence that made my blood turn cold.

*Keep Marcus away from the truth. He can never know what his father really left behind.*

I looked up.

“What is this?””

Nobody spoke.

I read it again.

Then again.

My hands started shaking.

“What did my father leave behind?””

Tasha covered her face.

Robert looked devastated.

And Ethan whispered:

“That’s the part nobody wanted you to find out.””

I stared at the message.

All my life, I thought my father’s biggest mistake was dying too soon.

Now I wondered if his biggest mistake was leaving me alive with secrets.

I looked at Tasha.

“You knew about this?””

She shook her head.

“Not this message.””

“But you knew there was something.””

A long silence.

Then she nodded.

“Yes.””

“How long?””

Her voice broke.

“Since before our wedding.””

The words hit harder than everything else.

Before our wedding.

Before I promised forever.

Before she stood in front of our families and said she chose me.

She had already been carrying a secret.

I walked toward the door.

“Marcus…”

I stopped.

I didn’t turn around.

Because I was afraid if I saw her face, I would forgive her.

And I wasn’t ready for that.

“Where are you going?””

I looked down at the stuffed bear still hanging from my hand.

The same bear I brought for my son.

The same bear I thought represented the beginning of my family.

“I don’t know.””

My voice cracked.

“But I know I can’t stay here.””

I reached the door.

Then Robert spoke.

“Marcus.””

I stopped.

“There’s one more thing.””

I slowly turned.

Robert looked at me with tears in his eyes.

“Your father didn’t leave you money.””

I waited.

“He left you evidence.””

My heart started pounding.

“Evidence of what?””

Robert looked toward Tasha.

Then Ethan.

And finally back at me.

“Evidence that the man who destroyed your father’s life…”

He paused.

“…is the same man who has been controlling yours.””

I stared at him.

“Who?””

Robert’s face went pale.

May you like

And he said a name I never expected to hear.

“Your mother.””
