The Man at the Door / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5: The Name on the Record

I stood in the hospital hallway with the phone pressed against my ear, unable to move.

The world kept going around me.

A nurse pushed a cart past.

A couple laughed quietly near the elevators.

Someone’s shoes clicked against the polished floor.

But I heard none of it.

Because one sentence had erased everything I thought I knew.

My father wasn’t gone because of an accident.

He was taken from me.

And someone knew.

Someone helped hide it.

“Mom.””

My voice barely worked.

“Say it again.””

There was a long silence.

Then I heard her crying.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

I gripped the phone tighter.

“You don’t get to say my name like you’re comforting me.””

My voice shook.

“You don’t get to tell me something like this after seven years of silence and act like one conversation fixes it.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

I looked down at the floor.

“I spent seven years believing my father just lost control of his car.””

My throat tightened.

“I spent seven years thinking the last conversation I had with him was just a normal argument.””

A painful silence.

“He told me he was disappointed in me.””

My eyes burned.

“He told me I was too young to understand the world.””

My voice cracked.

“And I walked away angry.””

My mother whispered:

“Marcus…”

“I never apologized.””

The words came out before I could stop them.

“I never got to apologize.””

On the other end, my mother broke down.

But I couldn’t let her crying change what happened.

Not this time.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

The answer was immediate.

That hurt.

Not because it surprised me.

Because she didn’t even try to deny it.

“How long?””

“Since the night it happened.””

My stomach dropped.

“The night?””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing?””

“I was afraid.””

I closed my eyes.

Everyone had the same excuse.

Fear.

Every person who betrayed me.

Every person who hid the truth.

They were all afraid.

But somehow, I was the one who had to live with the consequences.

“Who was it?””

My mother went silent.

“Mom.””

“I can’t say over the phone.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Of course.””

“Marcus, please.””

“No.””

I walked toward the exit.

“I’m done with pieces of the truth.””

“Listen to me.””

Her voice became urgent.

“There are things you don’t understand.””

“Then explain them.””

“I’m trying to keep you alive.””

I stopped.

The words chilled me.

“What?””

My mother lowered her voice.

“You need to understand something.””

I waited.

“Your father didn’t die because he found out someone was stealing money.””

I frowned.

“Then why?””

“He found out someone was planning something much bigger.””

The hospital doors opened in front of me.

Cold night air hit my face.

“What kind of something?””

A pause.

Then:

“Something involving your name.””

I froze.

“My name?””

“Yes.””

My heart started racing.

“What does that mean?””

Before she could answer, another voice interrupted.

A man’s voice.

I knew it instantly.

“Who are you talking to?””

My blood ran cold.

Because the voice wasn’t coming from the phone.

It was behind me.

I slowly turned.

Standing near the hospital entrance was Robert.

But he wasn’t alone.

His face was pale.

And beside him stood someone I never expected to see.

My uncle.

Daniel.

The man who hugged me at my father’s funeral.

The man who told me my father would want me to be strong.

The man my mother had just warned me about.

My phone was still against my ear.

My mother heard the silence.

“Marcus?””

I stared at Daniel.

He looked older.

Tired.

But not surprised.

That was the worst part.

He wasn’t surprised to see me.

He looked like he had been expecting this moment.

“Mom,” I whispered.

“Is he there?””

I didn’t answer.

I didn’t need to.

My mother knew.

“Oh God.””

Daniel took one step toward me.

“Marcus.””

I lowered the phone.

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

His expression changed.

“You shouldn’t be here alone.””

I stared at him.

“Interesting choice of words.””

“What?””

“You said I shouldn’t be here alone.””

My voice became colder.

“Not ‘you shouldn’t be here.’”

His face tightened.

“You know.””

He looked at Robert.

Then back at me.

“You know something.””

I laughed quietly.

“Everyone knows something.””

I held up the phone.

“My entire life has been a secret meeting I wasn’t invited to.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Who called you?””

I stared at him.

“You’re worried about who called me?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I looked at Robert.

“Did you know he was coming?””

Robert looked uncomfortable.

“No.””

“Did you know he was involved?””

Another silence.

I nodded slowly.

“Of course.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Marcus, you need to listen to me.””

“No.””

“Your father was in trouble.””

“My father was murdered.””

The words hit him.

For the first time, Daniel looked afraid.

Not guilty.

Afraid.

That told me everything.

“You heard that?””

I asked.

Daniel looked away.

“You need to understand the situation.””

I almost smiled.

There it was again.

The same sentence.

The same pattern.

Everyone wanted to explain.

Nobody wanted to admit.

“What situation?””

I stepped closer.

“My father died.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Your father made enemies.””

“Because he found out the truth?””

“Because he pushed too hard.””

The answer was strange.

Not a denial.

Not even close.

I felt my chest tighten.

“You knew.””

Daniel said nothing.

“You knew.””

His shoulders dropped.

“Yes.””

The hallway seemed to spin.

I looked at Robert.

Then at Daniel.

“You both knew.””

Robert closed his eyes.

Daniel looked exhausted.

“Marcus, your father wanted to expose people.””

“Who?””

Nobody spoke.

I shook my head.

“I’m done asking.””

I reached into my pocket and pulled out the key Robert gave me.

Daniel saw it.

And everything changed.

His face went white.

“Where did you get that?””

I looked at the key.

Then at him.

“Why?””

He stepped forward.

“Give it to me.””

I laughed.

Actually laughed.

After everything tonight, that was the first thing that felt almost impossible.

“You’re asking me for something my father left me?””

“You don’t know what’s inside.””

“Exactly.””

My voice sharpened.

“That’s why you’re scared.””

Daniel looked at Robert.

“Did you give him the key?””

Robert didn’t answer.

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

I stepped closer.

“Neither did my father?””

The words hit him.

Because he knew.

He knew exactly what I meant.

My phone buzzed.

I looked down.

A message.

From my mother.

Only three words.

*Don’t trust Daniel.*

I looked up.

Daniel was watching me.

“Who was that?””

I put my phone away.

“Someone who finally told me the truth.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You think you know everything now.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“But I know enough.””

The elevator doors opened behind me.

I stepped inside.

Daniel moved quickly.

“Marcus!””

The doors started closing.

He looked genuinely desperate now.

Not angry.

Desperate.

“Don’t open that box!””

The doors stopped for a second.

I stared at him.

“Why?””

His face changed.

Because he realized he had already said too much.

“Because your father didn’t leave evidence.””

The elevator doors began closing again.

Daniel’s voice echoed through the gap.

“He left a confession.””

The doors shut.

I stood alone inside the elevator.

My breathing was heavy.

A confession.

Not evidence.

Not documents.

A confession.

The elevator descended.

And for the first time that night, I wondered if I was ready for the truth.

Because what if my father wasn’t the victim?

What if the person everyone was protecting me from…

wasn’t the person who killed him?

What if it was the person who knew why?

When the elevator reached the lobby, my phone buzzed again.

Another message.

This time from an unknown number.

I opened it.

There was a picture attached.

A photograph of my father.

Taken the night he died.

I stared at the screen.

Then I saw what was written beneath it.

A message that made my blood freeze.

*Your father wasn’t alone when he crashed.*

May you like

A second message appeared.

*And the person sitting beside him survived.*
